MATCHDAY GUIDE | Everything you need to know ahead of Revs at NYCFC (August 28, 2021) By Elizabeth Pehota Tuesday, Aug 24, 2021, 09:10 AM NYC coming off a weather-postponed derby match vs Red Bulls, after losing 1-0 in PHI the previous Wednesday.
As I noted elsewhere, I believe Buchanan and Gil (if he's even here) are not allowed to play in this one.
When asked about injured players in his press conference yesterday, Bruce replied that for tomorrow's game: Gil: out Bye: question mark Polster: available "We think by next week we will have the majority of our players ready to go." New England Revolution sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena speaks with the media ahead of the Revs' visit to New York City FC on Saturday, August 28, 2021.
Lots of player availability questions for this one - some of these may be simple, but the team's match guide does nothing to address them. Has the league issued anything official about Buchanan not being able to play due to missing the all star game? Will Turner play in this one? I read on the Revs site article about his Nat call up that he reports on Sunday to Nashville. Seems reasonable enough from a travel perspective? Buksa is implied to be here for this one, then travel to Poland to join camp for their 9/2 match against Albania. From a Bent Musket article - The Revs have confirmed that Buksa is expected to miss the September 3rd MLS matchup on the road between the Revs and the Philadelphia Union. https://www.thebentmusket.com/2021/8/16/22627860/adam-buksa-called-up-to-polish-national-team
Yeah I think we'll see most of the team on saturday, and then see a rotated version of whoever is left against the union
I hope you're wrong on Tajon and question if a player that has been injured for a long time could be punished for missing the All Star game???
I was hoping this would be played at RB Arena, but it's at Yankee Stadium - always a crazy game on that compressed field. OTOH, NYCFC hasn't played on the short/narrow field as much as usual either.
NYC has only played 4 games at Yankee Stadium this season. They have outscored their opponent 15:2 in those games: 7/30: NYC 4:1 CLB 7/25: NYC 5:0 ORL 5/15: NYC 1:1 TOR 4/24: NYC 5:0 CIN
The idea of the rule is to prevent players from skipping the All Star game so that they can focus on the regular season, which used to happen a fair bit. While Tajon didn't skip the ASG just for fun, he didn't really have a good excuse – he really should have taken the Revs' time to go to Bruges – so it's a legit use of the rule. And in Gil's case, the rule doesn't really impact long-term injuries. If you're injured so long that you miss the ASG, missing the next game after it is a drop in the bucket. And if you were able to attend the ASG, the rule's original intent applies to you.
So Polster is back? Buchanan out. Anyone else I'm missing? My sportsbook has got the Revo 3.9 - 1 to win. That seems awfully high for the league leader. Even if it's a road game.
Ive seen the starting lineup and have two problems. 1) Bunbury - Why? What did Bou play in the allstar game? 20 minutes maybe? We'll see but I would play Rennicks over Bunbury at this point 2) Maciel - I have little use for him. Scotty should be starting over him after a great game last time
Once, Bunbury was where scoring opportunities went to die. Tonight, after 13 mins., it’s still Bunbury and now Buksa... alas.
Bou for Boetang!?!?! It should have been Bou for Bunberry! In a NY minute, FCNY #11 shows how this game’s lineup fails due to Tajon and Carles absences.
I think Arena has done a good job with the Revs. He's taken a bad team under Friedel and made them a top team in short order. In order to make that happen, he had to push Burns out. A task no other coach was able to do and it end up limiting their ability to accomplish much. That being said... I dont think he's perfect. I think he has blind spots on some players and he just doesnt see what some (including me) see when they play. I'll name three examples of players we can do without 1) Teal - Every now and then he does something good but those times are becoming more far and few between. He just doesnt offer much anymore and yet, when we're down a forward last night. Arena starts him. Did he produce anything in the minutes he played? NO. It was like being a man down. Id rather give the minutes to a young guy like Rennicks to see what he can do. Arena will never do that though 2) Traustason - Im sorry but he is a bust. He takes up space but offers little. Id try to move him or just cut my losses next year 3) Maciel - Arena seems to love him but I dont see why. Two games ago, he stunk the place up and Arena benched him in favor of Caldwell. Scotty had a great game and as a result, got zero minutes last night. Kinda makes you wonder what one has to do? Maybe it the Brazilian heritage or the single name thing? Idk but he produces little and some nights doesnt even seem to show up. Bottom line... we cannot have a CM that produces nothing and doesnt score much either. Reduce his role to bit player until he starts producing something A few posts ago the stats guys jumped on my case with all their numbers on how much we score blah blah blah. I'll ask those guys today.... did we look dangerous last night? Where were the goals or even shots? Are we now totally dependent on Tajon to win? I still contend that we have trouble scoring and offer last night as exhibit A
Let's not forget where this game was played. I wish the league would stop allowing game to be played there. It was not a great effort tonight, but I plan to erase this game from my memory. I like the Revs chances against NYFC on a field with proper dimensions.
Bou played a half. If you choose to base your opinion on single games, then stats won't matter to you at all. Stats aren't meant to be a one game situation, they look over a longer term. In other words, while everyone jokes that a guy who scores a hat-trick in the first game is now on pace for 102 goals ... we know that won't happen. So why bother debating this point. To the actual game ... I'd rather just move on. Lots of players missing, lack of cohesion on an absolutely horrid field (how many players slipped on the infield area?). We supposedly had 12 shots, but only one was on frame. This was one of those games where we just didn't seem to have "it." The only benefit I'm taking out of this one ... SKC tied Colorado and Seattle lost at home to Portland, so we didn't lose our 7 point lead on the Shield.
Seattle got shut out last night by Portland (a team they recently beat 6-2). Does that mean their offense stinks? I will agree with you on Teal though. I like Teal, but he has been very frustrating to watch all season.
Not Too Good, oh well, we were not going to go undefeated the rest of the way. The NYCFC analyst, who would rival Davis as an annoying homer, kept saying that NYCFC put out their best line-up. To go after the Revs and make up for their earlier loss to them. I agree with asctester, that field is terrible. I was never a big fan of Teal, I always thought his best role was late in the game when the defense had tired legs. But the last few games he has appeared in has really exposed his deteriorating skills. A few games ago he had 3 headers towards goal, that didn't even go towards goal. I thought bad night, but the skill level really hasn't gotten much better than that in his other games. As for injured Revs, I wish they would put out a weekly update. It doesn't have to be specific just, for example, Bell is expected to be out 2 more weeks. This total silence is very frustrating. It still really irks me the Bye is given the night off comment from 2 weeks ago. I don't think Brad said fortnight!!
I did have one thing about the game ... the announcers. Davies, once NYCFC scored, made the comment that it was against the run of play. At that point, the possession was something like 63-37, NYCFC had more shots, had looked more dangerous ... and that goal was against the run of play?
THIS - I'm probably not the only one who thought this NYCFC game was a likely spot for a loss, so all I was hoping for was that IF we lost, others would drop points, too.
