9.2.1.c The game is restarted with a drop ball: … c. following a temporary suspension of play for an injury or unusual situation … A dog on the field is an unusual situation. It is not a foul or misconduct.
Get thee to PA, where there's no class for HS (bridge or otherwise) and you just have to pass the test.
Same in New York. There is no bridge class from USSF to HS. You could be a long time National Referee with USSF and still have to take the entry level HS clas and work your way up to varsity games!
This weekend we did a tournament with two sets of comms, my first real extended experience with comm devices. Saturday we used a $200 set of Chinese motorcycle ones from Amazon Sunday we used a professional $2000 Yapalong set The Chinese motorcycle ones are better.
Honestly, no need. I doubt I'll ever come across professional level comms again, but the fact is the Chinese motorcycle ones (under the brand name Maxquall for Amazon, Vnetphone and EJEAS if you buy their "unbranded" cheaper identical Chinese counterpart) were really excellent despite some initial pairing problems. They are quite compact and lightweight, had a smaller armband that fit better on arm and under jersey sleeve, and the audio and mics worked perfectly fine with a long battery life lasting us at least 4 hours and could have gone more.
I use these, and most of the time I just stick the unit in my shirt pocket. No real problems doing it that way.
Not best stories.... First two days of HS season, varsity double headers both days... 1st game, player trips on ball and face plants and just lays there... Trainer immobilizes head/neck until ambulance arrives 20' later and takes her to the hospital. 4th game, it's stupid hot & humid. About 20' into 1st, star forward wobbles away from play and tells me, "uh, ref, my heart's not right..." <tweeeeeet> MEDIC!!!! Ambulance takes him to the hospital, suspect severe heat illness. Two ambulances in two days... not a good start.
We plan to use them again this weekend as we have some good high level matches (two U17 NPL/Elite Academy boys games, and two U19 boys matches, one of which is NPL) so maybe I will try the shirt pocket method. Honestly I don't know how anyone uses those Yapalongs. They are a huge brick strapped to your arm, and the other crew member and I almost fell out of our seats when the owner of them whipped out VESTS you have to strap them into. And I'm pretty sure the earpiece was larger too, it hurt my ears a lot. They are really terrible. I barely even noticed that the Maxqualls were on me. I limited any criticisms and comparisons about them to the Maxqualls we used the previous day because I didn't want to make the guy feel bad for the amount of money he needlessly spent on them (he doesn't even do adult amateur level games, it's all just high school and high youth) The only issue I had with the comms was the unnecessary chatter the other two were doing in most of our matches. Mostly what angered me was one guy in the crew infuriatingly making comments as an AR in every game about challenges in the completely opposite quadrant or other places nowhere near him. Like any time two players came together, anywhere on the field, he would be like "no no no" or "yeah ohh I would have called that one", etc.
Temperatures in the low 70's, not a cloud in the sky. College men's game. Zero cards. 'we want disadvantage, ref.' Well, that's pretty much what it sounded like. Visiting team has won the ball 15 yards on their defending half and one guy is now running with the ball, about to enter the attacking third. "Look at your AR, ref!!!!" I look over. Lead AR is running with play. I look back, half expecting to see an injury or something. The trail AR has the flag down but, when we make eye contact, he raises it quickly and then puts it back down, saying "offside." Okay, by popular vote of the visiting team, I bring it back for a free kick from their half of the field. Of course, nothing came from the kick.
One time years ago, they was AR1 on a D III college game. A home team forward had the ball and was foul outside the penalty area. He maintained possession of the ball, and the center referee yelled, “Play on!” After the forward got the shot off that was saved by the goalkeeper, I heard the home assistant coach yell, “We’ll take the foul instead!” Now he is an experienced coach/former player so I don’t know what he was thinking. A player later told me that they had been practicing free kicks near the penalty area so that is why the assistant didn’t want advantage being callled.
Not my "Best Story" but it looks like someone here also reads Ask A manager judging from this post, #9: https://www.askamanager.org/2021/08...ther-stories-of-revenge-on-jerks-at-work.html Cheers, Mi3ke
Ha...as a Field Engineer it was always a hoot when some suit's nephew with a week's experience was installed as Project Mgr.
A project manager's main duty is to schedule meetings. And if the project is falling behind schedule, call more meetings
Just did 12 minutes of AR1 for D2 NCAA Womens conference game of NISOA because I had my ref gear attire on for my game in 1.5hrs and I knew the refs. Heh. Right place. Right time. Neat.
Not failing to demand the group devote all energy to urgent submission of status reports to explain why the schedule has slipped
Not a good story but story nonetheless This was the first weekend of fall season. Due to covid, we haven’t had fall season since mid November 2019. I had the following matches scheduled: Today: U17B NPL/EA center, U16G NPL AR, break, U19B D1 AR, U19B NPL center Tomorrow: U17B NPL/EA AR, U16G NPL center, break, U19G D1 AR This was probably the strongest slate of weekend games I’ve ever had as a referee in level and number. Looks like all the matches will be cancelled due to poor air quality from state wildfires. The disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
And yet, as I just finished my first week of scrimmages, I found out that our chapter has a net loss of 10 referees. Between college and HS, I have games every single day of the week starting Tuesday after Labor Day until mid October.
I finally bought comma for HS duals. Used them on two competitive varsity duals. Best $200 I've spent on this habit.

You got the Maxqualls from Amazon? I used those last weekend in a tournament and they are definitely very good but spending $200 on this stuff is a tough pill for me to swallow. .
Yes, those are the ones. i was eying the FBIM's, but didn't want to wait on them via AliExpress and I really wanted something for this weekend's games. There are better sound quality units, but I was happy going from nothing to having these. We could talk low and still hear each other while hollering advantage and whistles were noise-reduced - not loud in the earpiece at all. Surprised at how they picked up some coach/bench chatter when my partner was near them. We're doing mostly duals for HS again this season and it's been issues on some competitive duals that have made me want to quit HS. They came in very very handy several times (and in a number of ways) on my last two duals. For me, they were worth it and they will get used a bunch.
Sometimes the week just keeps getting better. Just got appointed my first MLS Next game (as center referee) for the 1st MLS Next game in my state..
My toes are officially in college waters (preseason), and so far it's been the best experience of my career on the field (player or referee)... Worked Tues and Thurs with the same crew at the same school, all of us 22 years old. Our center was an absolute beauty with a set of Vokkeros to use and the skill to back it up. Tough high paced Sunday-league-esque game, but he squashed the fires before they grew and we had a blast. Thursday's women's game I was AR1 and absolutely demolished a poor girl on the home team while sidestepping hard down the line. Imagine @coreyrock with a corner flag, but it wasn't a flag. Her teammates were laughing up a storm, and I came back when there was a lull in the action to apologize and have a laugh, thankfully everyone was giddy and happy. Those two were the most fun games I've had in my life; I would work with that crew exclusively until the day I die and never complain. Next, I spent the weekend with some Marine friends at the lake for my birthday and then came back today for a third game at the same school, this time the men's team again. I was AR2, and honestly, I got a bit too conversational with a ball girl from the women's team during the long stoppages. Later in the 2nd half, there's an injury and she taps me on the shoulder and asks "is your name THIS or THAT," neither of which were correct. We had her whole team play the guessing game for a bit and once they got it right they started repeatedly yelling "YOU RUN THAT LINE SAMMY!!!" Was it professional? No way, but I run my ass off every game and it makes me so happy that we could all have some fun during the stopages in a preseason not-so-friendly. I will re-acquire my serious deadpan face for the regular season, but for now, my lord has it been a fun time.
