    No.

    It's back!

The 2021 WK-League season has the same format as last year's, 21 rounds, then the playoffs of the top 3 scheduled for September-October.

    Pre-season news -
Champions' coach is out: Incheon has sacked(?) Jeong Seong-cheon, who led the Red Angels for only one full season. To be precise, "the club decided to terminate the contract through mutual agreement with manager Jung", says YNA. The interim coach is Kim Eun-sook.

10 years of Hwacheon KSPO: The playoffs are the aim in the club's anniversary season, says their director Kang Jae-soon (on AAWF). You can follow them through the year thanks to their goalie Jung Bo-Ram, on her vlog.

Olympic heartache: Korea's women fell 1 goal short of reaching the finals. Sad also for Sejong international DF Shim Seo-yeon, who had hoped to cap her 10-year career by competing in the Games in Japan (AAWF interview).

Madoka Haji retires: Talking of Japan, the Suwon WFC stalwart Haji is leaving after 3 seasons, ending her pro playing career, but on her blog hints she'll stay involved in football. Don't worry, @blissett, Suwon has 3 new Japanese players in its squad!

League coverage: Near-total live streaming continues on itop21sports, all kickoffs 18:00 KST. The increase in live games in 2020 was probably due to Covid lockdown, but I read the league ended the 19:00 kickoffs for an old-fashioned reason: getting news reports in before their deadline!

Round 1, Mon 26 Apr - Incheon Hyundai Steel v Seoul City Hall, Gyeongju KHNP v Changnyeong WFC, Hwacheon KSPO v Suwon WFC, Boeun Sangmu v Sejong Sports Toto

    An early shocker

    R3: Incheon Red Angels 1 - 2 Suwon WFC
    Son Hwa-yeon 83' / Mebae Tanaka 22', Lee Young-ju OG 49'

Suwon's first win at Incheon for 7 years is well deserved, but aided by an Incheon side who looked awfully ordinary, failed to control play, and made errors front and back. The nature of the loss is the craziest thing - Suwon (1 point in the first 2 rounds) attacked brightly for three quarters of the match. Incheon had little in reply and weirdly substituted Del Estal and Neném off after 40 minutes and switched to a 3-5-2 but it didn't change much, and Suwon continued to outdo them often in midfield. The Red Angels' resurgence and goal came too late. Perhaps they miss the box-to-box running of Lee So-dam, who's signed for the U.S. team Batman FC, a move that only a joker could recommend.

Anyway, it's great to have it back. Filling the void by watching the WKBL where my team is of course the Woori Bank Wibee, it's okay, but just not the same.

Rounds 1–5: :cautious::confused::D ..what more to say?

An incredible 5 weeks. The champions Incheon are in a slump of unknown duration without a permanent coach, and they've had another poor home result, 0-0 vs Boeun at the Red Angels' fortress, Asiad Rugby Stadium. The army club escape from last place and earn their 2nd point of the season.

Keeping it close, other teams' matches are also unpredictable just now. Gyeongju got enough goals for 3 wins and 2 draws, leading the league, but opponents have also figured out how to score past them. Meanwhile, Seoul had an unusually good start (3 wins) while dressing in kits like PSG's, but even PSG has a limit - Incheon beat Seoul 7-0, a hat-trick for Jung Seol-bin.

Suwon and Hwacheon KSPO have each made a promising start in mid-table. Suwon held Gyeongju to 2-2 in round 5 (Moon Mi-ra 8', Choo Hyo-joo 74' / Ines Nrehy 66', 70'). Hwacheon's big signing of the season is Thays Ferrer, a Brazilian attacking midfielder of the type who've often done well in South Korea.

    R1: Hwacheon KSPO 1 - 0 Suwon WFC

    Points after 5 rounds: Gyeongju 11, Incheon 10, Seoul 9, Suwon/Hwacheon 7, Sejong 5, Boeun/Changnyeong 2

Rounds 6–10, it's a good season for Seoul in 3rd place at the midway stage, although Seoul haven't finished so high since 2014. Yoo Young-a scored a hattrick in their 4-1 victory vs Sejong. In the past two weeks, Seoul won 3-2 at Suwon, who are quite inconsistent this year, and the Seoul goalkeeper Ryu Ji-su made a penalty save at Boeun in a 1-1 draw secured by Yoo's last-minute header.

Seoul were unlucky against Incheon - a dubious free-kick kept Incheon in it, and the Red Angels got a late win 3-2 at their local rivals. Incheon are now winning games, but a bit unimpressive. This was the first rematch of the previous final - a goal by new signing Choi Yu-ri put Incheon into top spot:

Incheon Red Angels 1 - 0 Gyeongju KHNP

The top 2 are having more problems against the other teams now, which is a good sign for the league competition. Incheon needed a 93rd-minute long-shot from Neném to win 1-0 this week at Suwon, while Gyeongju were trailing for an hour at Hwacheon KSPO, thanks to a deft flick by goalscorer Fumina Katsurama - but Gyeongju stormed back to win 3-1. Gyeongju also had to come from behind to win at the last-placed Changnyeong, 2-1, due to a free-kick winner by Seo Ji-yeon.

    Points after 10 rounds: Incheon 25, Gyeongju 23, Seoul 16, Hwacheon 14, Suwon 11, Boeun 10, Sejong 8, Changnyeong 3

Rounds 11–16: Seoul will almost certainly be in the playoffs now in 3rd place, after four wins and a credible draw vs Gyeongju, 2-2. But Suwon (4th) are left to rue their missed chances.

The title chase was affected more when Gyeongju fell to Suwon 2-1, but recovered with two 6-0 wins. Ines Nrehy scored a "penta-trick" and she could win the golden boot this year. Gyeongju gave a strong performance in beating Incheon, 3-1, to cut the Red Angels' lead to 4 points. The clubs will meet again in the last match round. Incheon won their other five games (Kim Eun-sook seems set to stay as coach for the full season), but the game of "last vs first" was hair-raising: Incheon were nearly kept goalless at Changnyeong and the top team finally prevailed 1-0 (header by Choi Yu-ri 84'). Incheon also won the summer tournament, 21st National Women's Football Championship.

Seoul got the close wins: 1-0 vs Hwacheon (Lee Su-bin 13') and another big result vs Suwon this week. Suwon's inconsistency is the thing that's hurt their playoff chances - Hwacheon also beat them 1-0, a familiar story this year, but great goal by Lee Soo-bin (yes, the league has two players with that name :)). And so, our final top 3 should give this year's playoffs a new lineup trio, for the first time since 2017.

    16R: Seoul WFC 1 - 0 Suwon WFC
    Han Chae-lin 32'

    Points after 16 rounds (5 to go): Incheon 40, Gyeongju 36, Seoul 29, Suwon 21, Hwacheon 21, Boeun 20, Sejong 8, Changnyeong 4

Rounds 17–21: Total collapse for Seoul, the worst ending of any team's season, and they somehow miss the playoffs...!

Changnyeong had little to cheer this year, but against Seoul, they took their only win of 2021. Nanase Kiryu and Choi Ji-na scored in the 3-1 upset.

Seoul also capitulated 6-0 at Gyeongju and 3-0 at Sejong, before the final indignity - a last match, last-minute loss. Seoul were about to seal the playoff, but one goal cost them everything...

    21R: Hwacheon KSPO 2 - 1 Seoul WFC
    Fumina Katsurama 25', Namgung Ye-ji 90' / Kim So-yi 21'

That lets Suwon overtake into 3rd - but the playoff places are not decided yet.

The WK-League had its first Covid positive cases: two Incheon Korea internationals tested positive on returning from the games in Uzbekistan. And so, Incheon's last 2 games were postponed. (The league also had a false positive case in 2020, you may recall.)

This week, they're back. Incheon (49pts) need one win to secure the important top playoff place, but Gyeongju (48pts) still have a chance. Hwacheon (5th) could steal 3rd place today, but only if they win against the reigning champions. All the games are streaming live:

Playoff: An amazing contest, maybe the best "P.O." ever! Suwon looked like winners at half-time, ahead 3-1 - but with a scoring surge it's Gyeongju who are going to the final:

    PO: Gyeongju 5 - 4 Suwon
    Asuna Tanaka 21'p, Park Ye-eun 47', Yeo Min-ji 48', Josée Nahi 58', 84' / Jeon Eun-ha 3', Choo Hyo-joo 18', Moon Mi-ra 41', Mebae Tanaka 90'

Or see Full video / Match report (KWFF)

So, the final is Gyeongju v Incheon, for the third time. First leg is today, and the 2nd leg on Friday. A few things make this final unique - the teams played each other only seven days ago; Incheon are not the season's top-scoring team, for the first time since 2012; and Gyeongju, despite their stellar attack, will be reeling from their worst defensive display in the playoff.

Last week, their round 21 match in Incheon was a dead rubber in the end, but Gyeongju got an away win and finish 1 point behind for the second season in a row. The 2-1 would have been more, without an awful miss by Park Ye-eun. This was the final regular-season table:

    1 Incheon Red Angels 52pts (+37GD)
    2 Gyeongju KHNP 51pts (+42GD)
    3 Suwon WFC 30pts (+8GD)
    4 Seoul WFC 30pts (-16GD)
    5 Hwacheon KSPO 28pts, 6 Boeun Sangmu 22pts, 7 Sejong 14pts, 8 Changnyeong 9pts
    • Top scorer: Josée Nahi, Gyeongju, 15 goals

The final is streaming on itop21sports - (KO 09:00 GMT, 18:00 KST)

    1: Gyeongju v Incheon (Tue 16 Nov)
    2: Incheon v Gyeongju (Fri 19 Nov)

Hai (yes). Well, I must add that Katsurama's club received some karma for their cruel crushing of Seoul's dreams, or "the dark night of the Seoul", because Hwacheon's season was ended by a cruel 1-0 loss to Incheon. But it's not really karma. Just very hard to beat that team.

In the playoff, both of the opposing Tanakas scored a whāinga, but they only played 55 mins between them - Asuna was tactically subbed out at half-time for Kim Hye-ji, to make it more attacking (hence Gyeongju's goals soon afterwards), and Mebae came on for Suwon late on.

Final: Even if you know the way... ask ONE MORE TIME!

1st leg: Stunning start by Incheon, real shock and awe, and a goal inside 2 minutes. Lee Min-a and Lee Young-ju combined lethally on the left and the cross forced an own goal by Kim Hye-young. The hosts Gyeongju equalized right at the end, when Red Angels captain Lim Seon-joo handled to give away a penalty to Asuna Tanaka. Eagle eyes by referee Jo Hae-mi - I didn't even spot the handball until after the game - though both sides had had other claims denied. 1-1 was a fair result but a blow for Gyeongju, who were often disjointed and couldn't worry Incheon as they often do.

    Full match: Gyeongju v Incheon
    [IMG]

    - Match reports: InSports Korea / Park Seo-ye, KFA

2nd leg: Well, at least try to act surprised :) A second burst of shock and awe after half-time, and Choi Yu-ri is the goal hero and match MVP for Incheon, in her first season after transferring from Sejong. The scoreline tells the story: Incheon won the title without being dominant or outstanding, just like in 2020: Gyeongju are almost there, but Incheon somehow take 1st place and the home final win every time. In 2022, they'll seek an amazing 10-in-a-row.

    Incheon 1 - 0 Gyeongju (Agg: 2-1) - (Choi Yu-ri 50')

    - Match reports: KWFF 1, KWFF 2, KWFF 3, Incheon's season, Choi Yu-ri MVP

...Gyeongju had "several attacks derived from Nahi, but the finish in the doorstep was insufficient by 2%". Sounds about right. The title win is a vindication of Kim Eun-sook as Incheon's new coach: a difference this time is that the Red Angels won with only Korean players, to a large extent - substitute Neném was a spectator for the goal, but it made a good photo nonetheless.

I'm afraid my contract's running out - I had a fun and fascinating time summarizing the league here the past 5 seasons, and thanks to @Bluewings21, @DynamoManiac, @chook90, @sac517 and @blissett for your posts. And, I'm sorry for getting Korean culture wrong. As the women's game grows, let's hope for a great Asian Cup, and make sure to support your local club! I won't have as much time for the big WK-League postings, but I will cover it along with more championships over on Women's International, so, maybe see you over there. ❤︎ Lots of love

This is Lee Min-a's YouTube channel. This video shows her Red Angel team's round 17 highlights against Gyeongju KHNP:

And this is Joo Soo-jin's YouTube channel. She was a Seoul WFC player until her 2018 injury encouraged her to retire in 2019. Prior to her injury, she had already thought of retiring to pursue her other interest. She returned this year, though not as a professional player (yet?), and started her YouTube channel:

In the 2010 U-17 Women's World Cup, she scored the second goal in a semifinal match against Spain. You can see her goal at 0:56 :
