Yes, and by quite a margin.
Dempsey went to Fulham for $9M, from Seattle.

Twellman or Joseph likely could have netted similar numbers but....

    Happy for Tajon.

From Fulham to Seattle for 9M, my apologies.

From Tottenham to Seattle for $9M*.
Seattle loaned him to Fulham for 2 months during the next offseason, but in terms of returning to MLS he had been bought by Spurs 12 months prior for $8.25M from Fulham

Does anyone know the MLS rules on transfer fees? How much of the 7M do the Revs get, and what are they allowed to spend it on? Since they already have three DPs, I assume they can't spend XXmillion to replace Buchanan . . . what are they allowed to do with the transfer money?

Pretty sure this is right but I am sure others will correct me if I am wrong. From what I can tell MLS gets 1/3rd and the Revs get 2/3rds of the 7 million. Only a small percentage can be used to replace the player, 650k in GAM. The rest has to be used for non player related business and can be used to pay down existing DP's.

I would image that if Tajon makes an immediate impact when he gets there that his stay will be short lived. He will get greater exposure there to the Big 5 leagues. the Jupilar league is a good league but like every other small league on the planet they exist by selling off their star players for profit to clubs in England, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. It will be interesting to see how much they make off Tajon and if the Revs get any of that

All speculation on the deal that I've seen leads me to believe we get 10% of his future transfer fee.

Thanks. Someone on twitter said the Revs are getting 95% of the 7m, including 1m GAM. I don't understand how GAM and the salary cap intersect . . . I'm going to assume that your general take is right and that they can't go out and spend millions on a direct replacement for Buchanan. So it will be interesting to see how Arena builds the 2022 roster. For the rest of this year, it will be interesting to see how Buchanan performs while on loan . . . any idea how well players perform when they are sold and loaned back?

This aligns with what Dell'Apa's article on the transfer in today's Globe says.

"The Revolution retain 10 percent sell-on rights for Buchanan, should Brugge transfer him to another club. Brugge is regarded as a “selling club,” usually investing transfer fees into purchasing players. Brugge has sold 37 players for a total of $175 million in the last five years. If Buchanan is transferred from Brugge, the Revolution would collect 10 percent of the transfer fee."

I think some of that money can be used to 'buy-down' one/more of our DPs, essentially moving them out of the category and opening a DP slot. I think Buksa is probably a candidate for that (and I'd like to see him extended as part of that).

As for replacing Tajon, I don't see that we need a 1 for 1 replacement, I think adding a skilled player at other positions might be of more benefit.

And, I expect we'll need to be in the market for acquiring a keeper this winter - but that's for another thread.

one would hope he would be professional about it. Given he has played with this guys for a few years, built bonds and has the chance to win trophies I would think he would want to be a big part of this team for the next few months

And it'd be foolish to think that Brugge (club and fans) weren't watching to see how he does.

If anything, I'd expect him to go absolutely lights out for a few games, take it kinda easy once we clinch playoffs, and come back on strong for the playoffs.

The 95% and $1M GAM is correct.

The transfer rules changed in 2019 to better incentivize teams to sell players and improve the prestige of the league.

So 95% of $7M is $6.65M. $1.05M can be immediately applies as GAM for buying down players/fitting extra salary on the roster. So where does the other $5.6M go? It can be used to cover capital costs (stadiums/training facilities/ youth programs/coaching) or it can be used on a transfer fee for a DP or U22 initiative player (whose transfer fees do not apply to the salary cap).

For the purposes of how this affects the revolution, this winter the team will only have 1 DP on the roster and 0 U22 initiarive players. Both Bou and Buksa will be out of contract. Bou will likely command a salary in the ball park of what Gil is getting, and will definitely be a DP. Buksa's salary will be interesting, but there is a world we give him a raise while still keeping him as a TAM player because his transfer fee will no longer apply to his cap number. So the fee could be applied to bringing in some combination of U22 initiative or DPs, and that's before considering that Bou or Buksa may not be back if they leave for greener pastures.

So, what you are saying is that it will be an absolutely fascinating, pivotal and gut-wrenching offseason as the team figures out what to do in the face of possibly having to replace multiple key contributors and chart the course for the future. It will be a lot easier to endure if we have a trophy or two in hand. In any event, this is the most fascinating and enthralling the Revolution have been since 2005-2007. 2002 was a nice moment, 2008 Superliga was a nice moment, 2014 was a nice run. This is different, and I hope to God it is sustainable and expandable.

Yeah it'll be quite the adventure.

By all accounts both Bou and Buksa are happy in NE, but Bou loves Racing Club and may want to go back to Argentina regardless of the money he's making in the states. Likewise Buksa is getting Poland recognition on the revs, but probably needs to be in a top 5 league (a French team tried to loan him in february) to take the next step in his career.

When Bou leaves it'll almost certainly be on a free, and it will stink, but he's 32 and who knows how long he remains a top wildcard scorer in MLS. In an ideal world we get paid when Buksa leaves, but there's still a chance he leaves for nothing, and the Tajon money will really come in handy.

But who knows. Maybe Jones and Turner also get sold in the next 18 months and we're cheering for an entirely different Gil centric team

Maybe Im wrong but I was under the impression that living conditions in Argentina these days is terrible. If thats true I cant imagine he'd want to go back there.

You're conflating what you would do and the conditions you think it has with what he wants to do in the place he grew up with the people he loves

Can we use any of that $7 million to find replacements for Feldman and Davies? That would be money well spent!

Meanwhile, Turner adds yet another accolade to his long list of accomplishments in 2021: All Star Game MVP.

As part of the next TV deal it sounds like MLS is going to centralize streaming and do away with blackouts, which essentially kills local broadcast rights, so we could be seeing the end of Feldman and Davies anyway.

Good for Turner, but I had absolutely zero interest in the MLS all-star game. It's American to have an all-star game; yeah and the players don't want to play in any of them.

Hello.... People are fleeing that Hell hole into neighboring countries at a high rate. Maybe he will get his family OUT of there and into somewhere safe? Money does little good if there is no food and run away inflation.

There's still plenty of time for the team to work out extensions if the players are amenable to it. I imagine resolving the 'Tajon' situation was probably of more immediacy and now that that's done, there are more resources to work with.
I would think, if anything, he would feel unleashed now that's he's got his contract signed. Prior to this, the whole European move could have been in jeopardy if he had gotten injured - how he has security for the next few years.
Who know what he is seeking at this stage of his life. I remember and interview with him where he described himself as a real 'homebody' and doesn't like going out, even to restaurants, very much. One advantage here is that he is able to live pretty quietly without getting confronted by fans whenever he's out in public.

I also suspect that he really enjoys the partnership with Gil - and having him extended is probably a good plus. And, I would also guess(?), that he likes playing for Arena.
    Post of the day!
I would have to think that Berhalter would be impressed seeing him stop PKs from Liga All-Stars.
I wonder what your source of news is - that's sounds hugely exaggerated.
