Studies suggest that there are biomechanical reasons. No need to speculate much. Some teams make you earn minutes in practice. Others less so.

Sorry - my last comment on this thread unless someone starts a new one:
The biomechanical reasons have always been there. That doesn't explain the recent increase in ACL injury. Used to be like 1 per college team now it's like 1 per college class, or more like 4 on a typical college team. I know of a recent Sr class and 4 of the 8 had ACL reconstruction.
I can also say that the prevalence of ACL injury has led to alot of Drs doing the surgery that did not before. Just to meet demand. Completely anecdotal, but I've seen more bad/failed or reinjured ACLs then ever before. Used to say the recovery rate was like 97%, that the new knee will be better than the old. That depends on who does the surgery now more than ever.

I agree with this. Also, the more games and practices you have, the more chances you have to get injured.

To me it's analogous to MLB (and younger) pitchers routinely needing "Tommy John" surgery these days. Didn't see that as often with the workhorses in the 60's and 70's.

Not analogous. Those 60s and 70s workhorses weren't throwing with anything like the spin more recent generations are.

Does anybody have an updated roster, by chance? There are near 40 players on this team and it seems like a big chunk of them are using kit numbers that don't match up with goheels.com ... really weird to me they still haven't fixed it.

for example, Thursday saw Asha Means use #30 ... is that her number now, and if so does that mean Bingham is done at UNC with her latest injury?

A point on the roster #'s I've discovered. The Heels wanted to reveal their new kits at tonights home openers, so for the exhibition games they were wearing old kits. Some of the players had numbers that didn't exist in the old kits so they were wearing different numbers of other players who were injured or not available for whatever reason. For example, #39 Asha Means wore Brooke Bingham's #30 for both exhibition games. It really through me for a loop and I hope they never do something like that again.

I'm going to start cranking out gif highlights of tonights game soon on twitter.

Wonder if Dorrance manages to get out of this potential mess

Ally Sentnor got injured, its pretty much the end of UNC's season before it even started.

Right. Let me guess, Texas season is still good with Missimo and Byars right? Or does "pretty much" buy you an out when UNC perform well? Some of your takes seem to ignore the fact that soccer is a team game.

WIth regard to the new kits, I personally do not like them, The darker blue (or black?) makes me think of Dook -and who wants to do that?? (A little kidding. Duke hired me even with a UNC degree and I worked at Duke for three years back in the 1970s, but for a number of reasons, there is no contest for my loyalty.)

My real beef with the dark blue kits is that the lighter blue numbers on the jerseys are not decipherable at more than 50 feet. I thought that it might be my old eyes, but my son and grandsons could also not make out numbers, only for then the distance as about 100 feet. The Washington players numbers were easily readable anywhere on the field for all of us.

I will admit that close up, the new kits are pretty spiffy.

But on to the actual game last night...

I was really eager to see what the new crop of freshmen would look like. This class is different in that, other than Allie Sentnor, the American recruits did not have a lot of notoriety. But I have learned to have confidence in Chris Ducar's and Anson's recruiting and it looks like we have some good players joining the team regardless of pedigree. (I really am always baffled by TDS ratings of players. I don't think that they have the staff to look at a player more than once (if that) unless that player is involved with ODP, the US national teams, or in a top team at tournaments. In the UNC class five players met none of these situations.) ....But on Thursday the starters were laden with newcomers, and surprisingly displaced some upperclass players that most of us thought would be shoo-ins. Abbey Allen, Page Tolentino, and Isabel Cox, all of whom were regulars last year, were replaced by newcomers such as Emerson Eglin, and three of the four Emilys --Emily Moxley, and Emily Colton, and Emily Murphy. ...and they all did well! A fascinating game to watch.

And when the time came to rotate in much of the midfield and forwards, I was delighted to see Izzy Cox make a very strong statement as to why she might get her starting role back as she brilliantly set up the second goal by beating her defender from the corner toward the goal and making a superb pass to Ruby Grant for the score, and then followed up with the third goal with a beautiful run through traffic into the box, and rounded the keeper for the score.

I anticipate that we will see a lot of experimentation throughout the season as Anson tries to figure out the best combination of players to get the job done. I'm sure that the defense will be looked at carefully. Bell started in the center as expected, and on the right was former substitute midfielder Maggie Pierce who played very well, and appears to have really put in the discipline and hours to to compete for a starting role. Libby Moore appeared to be on the left (dang unreadable jerseys!) and it makes me a little nervous to have two defenders at 5'3".

With all of the shuffling of players, certainly starters Sam Mesa, Rachel Jones, and Emily Murphy did well. And I must add that I was very pleased to see a lot of good team play. The kids were trying to do it right for the most part, even if is was the first game and there must have been great pressure to show well, I am sure,

So where are Talia Dellperuta and Julia Dorsey??? I have been assuming that Juilia would step into her role as left back. She was absolutely brilliant in our run to the Championship match with Stanford in 2019 and had the size and athleticism to keep super scorer Catarina Mercario from doing any damage in the 110 minutes run of play. Is she injured?! Will she back back this season? Is Talia injured? Any one know?

I did see defender Brooke Bingham at half time kicking a ball around with Ally Sentnor and three other players. Sentnor has a serious looking wrapping on her right knee and managed to move around pretty well but always kicking with her left foot only. Bingham looked just fine from what I could tell, but then again she looked fine a year ago not in uniform kicking a ball around then too.

In any case this is going to be a very interesting season, and if history is any guide, as players develop Anson will still be tinkering right into the NCAA tournament.

Quickly in response the only answer I can give is about Julia Dorsey. It was reported, or RT'ed, by Chris Henderson, that she had surgery in the summer and wasn't available until October at least. Not sure about Talia Dellaperuta. She was available and played in the exhibitions. I hope it's nothing serious.

Three Emily's, an Emmie, and an Emerson... all in one incoming class. My head is hurting as I sit down and try and learn the roster again. 40 players!

    Regarding the discussion above...
I took this as a good joke (especially as Sentnor was recruited as a 2022 player and wasn't expected to be playing at UNC this year anyway --until she chanaged her mind and informed Ason that she was graduating early from high school and wanted to come to UNC sooner.)

Did some digging... on top of this tweet there's also Brooke Bingham, whose name and number has been removed from the goheels roster. Me thinks her career is over.

40 players is a lot. Perhaps players playing too hard for starting spot?

40 players is a ridiculous number, even given that Dorrance plays more people in games than most coaches. Getting 20 players into a game is a lot--a big deal. I can't imagine managing 40. As for injuries, it's frustrating for we fans when players who are always on the field as starters or regular subs are suddenly not--and the reason is unknown. It's usually because of injury, of course--but given there's no information few people outside the program know whether it's a minor, short-term injury or something more serious. I think most colleges have gone way overboard with the privacy policy under Hipaa. I get that certain issues should be kept private--but, what, you can't say that a kid sprained an ankle or has a sprain? You need a cone of silence for standard injuries? I've never understood it.

I have some issues with the Box Score from the Washington game. I've posted them on twitter with the relevant @ but I'm sure they've muted me by now. :giggle:

So I'll post them again here in the hopes someone can get the correct information to the correct people.

Emily Murphy (35) goal at 10:42 was primary assisted by Emily Moxley (8). I am not sure if Rachel Jones' (10) cross qualifies as an assist.

Isabel Cox (13) goal at 60:20, listed as being unassisted but did in fact have a primary assist by Emerson Elgin (6) on the direct ball forward.

Interesting that her removal was done on a Saturday. She was on the roster as late as noon yesterday and gone by the evening.

My assumptions is that coaches are increasingly worried that if a competitor learns of an injury that will keep the player off the field, that a specific game plan will be generated for more advantage in an upcoming game. While some coaches have been tight lipped from the get go, Anson used to be quite open about injuries, but starting about 5 years ago has become mute on the subject.

Shows they treat this seriously with keeping it hidden from their competitors.

Good catch. Two obvious missed assists by the scorer. I'd that they were no brainers. I suspect it may be that after the scorer signs off, the official record of the march is set in stone.
