You know, I was interviewed a couple of times in the run-up to WWC 2015 on CTV during the 5 pm (Toronto time) segment. Both were about FIFA and Blatter and the like. I am normally pretty polished and professional, but at the end of the second time I was on - like a day before the opening of the tournament - I ended my commentary not with "thank you" or "you're welcome" but with "Go Canada Red!" The host chuckled and said something about rooting for Canada too, but I have not been invited back.
Unrelated by fun fact: I've actually shot the University of Montreal's women's soccer team. For some odd reason they came down at the start of the college season a number of years back and played Duke and UNC. Just looked it up. Holy crap I'm old. It was 2012. 8/24/12 vs Duke https://goduke.com/news/2012/8/24/205668547.aspx https://andymead.photoshelter.com/g...vs-Montreal/G0000NjkZQXp273c/C0000v3JBtyS912g 8/26/12 vs UNC https://goheels.com/sports/2012/8/26/Stats_8211.aspx#GAME.BOX https://andymead.photoshelter.com/g...th-Carolina/G0000pncDOon7jEg/C0000v3JBtyS912g
I'm an original Kansas City Wizards fan, you can't "cut me down" by bringing up domestic cups. I'm used to my team losing to amateurs. It's not that big of a deal. Plus I'm familiar with the Canadian MLS teams. You've got some proper shit-shows there. At least they're developing some nice talent for your national team.
They kind of proved they are D1 in their continental runs, I mean they did eliminate a team with a win in Panama, something FC Dallas couldn't do in 2018 but anyways - doesn't change that MLS is the stronger league Actually most of the nice North American talent came from non MLS academies but yes, Canadian MLS teams contribution is much appreciated.
A new member association is expected to be joining CONCACAF next month. They wont play in World Cup Qualifiers but they will play in regional competitions. Stay tuned.— Simon Preston (@SimonPreston93) August 3, 2021 TIL that Saint Pierre and Miquelon (population: 6-freaking-thousand) has a national team and a soccer league made of three teams. And I'm guessing those are scores against teams like St Kitts and Nevis or the British Virgin Islands, not Honduras.
Nah, they'll all end up in different groups as the Uber-minnows (except maybe for Montserrat at #180)...let them play each other.
I wanted Bol to spoil the NBC slobberfest coronation over Sydney but Bol didn't have the foot speed to catch the Americans. (unbelievable thing to say about a euro who split 49.99 indoors back in march. )
Did someone post this yet? NBC paid $7.75bn for its Olympic rights ... and we got televisual vomit - The Guardian
This year my Olympics viewing has been some early morning live stuff on Telemundo (mainly uninterrupted soccer) and NBC Sports Youtube highlight videos (on the YouTube app on my smart TV). A 6-15 second commercial at the start of the video, then basically just the event. I have missed a lot of context, but - as we all know - it's not like the main broadcast provides any of that. I'm a cord-cutter, so my choices are NBC and Telemundo over the air. I have flipped to both channels during prime-time in the hopes of seeing something from time to time, but frankly most of the time I find them mid-commercial. And of the times not in commercial, I'm more likely to find NBC showing some "profile" or they're in the studio than an actual sporting event. Sigh. I'm old enough to have grown up watching the Olympics on ABC with Jim McKay. It was sports, sports, and more sports - outside some horrific news stuff in Munich. If I recall the profile stuff started in earnest around the time we get to LA in 1984. Possibly as a reaction to the growing impact of cable TV in splintering the television viewership, but that might be me misremembering.
I have streaming cable (YouTube TV) so when I get home from work I look on NBCSN, USA, and CNBC to see what they showing because they tend to actually show sports. I watch 3-4 hours of Olympic coverage on those channels every evening very rarely venturing over to NBC. I love the Olympics but I like the sports. Any time they aren't showing sports I find another channel. I know I'm missing some big events but I'm ok with this approach. In the past I tried recording the primetime network coverage and fast-forwarding through the jibber jabber but I've just given up on that approach. Last night I watched water polo, basketball, marathon swimming, a bit of men's gymnastics, and a lot of track & field covering some heats and the beginning of the heptathlon and decathlon. It was the Olympics so I was happy.
I'm in the same boat as Andy. Fully cut the cord and would rather be set on fire than watch the tiresome non sports approach of NBC. I think I've probably watched 10-15 minutes of live olympics events this year and mostly just click through what looks interesting on the NBC Sports YouTube page once or twice a day. That's been more than enough.
