regardless how stupid it is or isnt, his still being their manager this time tomorrow would be more surprising than this win was for us. two cup finals, one summer- silverware dos a cero (tm)
very fitting - tata set robinson's development back a couple of years - so he could bring his argies in - and this was the perfect way to show him he was wrong.
Oh I know. It’s just not advisable to fire someone whose a great manager for losing two hard fought games in extra time the month before qualifying. But they very well might and honestly it’d be good for us if they do.
I need to go back and search tomorrow, but someone said very emphatically that Mexico was going to win this tournament "going away." No, really. They said that.
richards and robinson might be the best pair, actually. brooks is the best passer but he can give up some howlers and hes slow.
It's not just a matter of pedigree, but also about proving yourself against top competition. Bossing the Gold Cup is great, but I didn't see a lot of Bundesliga starters in the opponents' offenses. The best non-US attackers in CONCACAF (like Lozano, Jimenez, and David) weren't here, and Leon Bailey sat out the match against us. I mean, the tournament's leading scorer plays in the Qatar league. Robinson might well have what it takes at the highest level, but he hasn't had a chance to prove it yet.
Not as much, but it’s not like the USMNT will be playing Tiki Taka in the prairie dog fields of Central America. It’d be fun to see him play as a CF in Gregg’s system. And I also think CF’s should be able to win aerial duels.
Oh, and there was a chant. FS1 tried to shield it, but there absolutely was. Will be paying close attention to that development tomorrow.
i think its fitting that such a young team just won this - the real u23 team wasnt allowed to assemble and challenge at the olymipcs....so this is a good consolation prize, in a way.
Of course, he makes it tempting when he complains that the US isn’t taking the tournament seriously and Mexico is and that Mexico should start bringing U23 teams instead of first-choice teams. Set himself up for some criticism by losing under those circumstances.
NEVER underestimate the FMF to do something in a short-sighted and reactionary manner. They rival Roman Abramovich in that skill.
It seems like Robinson is now at the head of that logjam of MLSers fighting for a spot. He might take over for Aaron Long in the XI. It's between him at Richards atm. I think I prefer Robinson to Long, actually. Acosta seems like he has passed Lletget for the "veteran MLS midfielder" spot. I still think Zardes and Hoppe ultimately are competing for a single striker role. Wing/attacking is such a tough row to hoe. Pulisic, Reyna, Aaronson, Konrad, Morris, Ledezma and maybe Weah, depending on how you count him. Shaq might be at #2 at RB. But it might be Yedlin or Cannon, still. But, at the risk of fanboying, it seems like they're keeping a seat warm for Scally. Sands and Busio showed something for the future.
After the group round I did not think this team was good enough to win this tournament. I was never so happy to be wrong.
Arriola couldn’t score in a brothel. Not sure if that’s typical for him but he did not have a strong game
The thing that was really impressive was the growth through the tournament. What makes this a sport we love, is being part of, or experiencing a team that really comes together. That's what the best teams do. I hope the final 23 get their chance to grow together as well. Congratulations to players, coaches, and fans, its been a rough couple of years!
agreed. and this is why I want as many MLSers moving to europe as possible - it is a crucible that turns players into their best versions of themselves in many cases. MLS simply is not that. I think this Mexico game could be that for Acosta - this tourney.....it clearly clicked for him out there...hopefull he can bottle that. I think he was on the verge to moving to europe then crashed back to earth...and thats gotta be very tough. it was tough on him...hopefully this tourney was his antidote, so to speak. players dont usually resuscitate after falling back down and end up mls lifers.....I hope he can get a move to europe soon. he really played well. very very well. I think it was like an instant learning experience and it finally clicked somehow.
it is typical....its why I dont understand whhy hes on the team. never seen it from him in terms of end product. he bungles everything consistently.
