Four Five years in the Riohazard thread, I said that never has a single-stranded RNA virus attained such Olympic glory as when Hope Solo caught zika. Hahaha! Haha. ha

Will the Olympics even get to the opening ceremony (and why are they having one)? Will any women's football team have to drop out an account of 'being a little too positive'?

Well, at least we can all make fun of Team USA's jerseys, which seem purposefully designed to interfere with streaming services (and our brainwaves). Gah!

Sweden's football site has a guide for today's match, reminding us among other things that Sweden has a satisfying record of upsetting the US at the Olympics (and by that I also mean 'making them mad').* Here's hoping that Team USA will once again have to give its fans a near-to-tears apology in the post-game conference (though it will be hard to take them seriously if they're wearing those clown-suit jerseys).

    Heja Sverige!

    * Härliga OS-minnen mot USA

Yes, the pre-game coverage has just replayed Solo's glove-changing stunt, and Dala's subsequent goal. Nice to start the morning with a good belly laugh!

The anthems are playing. Those are truly empty stands, which is sad, but good. Team Sweden spreads themselves back apart after having huddling in a line for the anthem.

Team USA, thankfully, is not wearing their brain-breaker red-and-blue jerseys. Team Sweden's temperature of yellow this year makes then look a little bit like a highly organized gang of highway workers.

Ooo, nice goal. And deserved -- Sweden was certainly pressing more at the start, surprisingly.

Cooling break at 30minutes mark, because it's somewhere over 30C. Yikes.

As always! Sweden is absolutely capable of letting up too much and/or screwing up. Most likely is that they will simply get tired.

Halftime chatter among the TV folks here was mostly about how shockingly unorganized and out-of-synch Team USA seems. The pundits were also a bit surprised that the time to talk during the cooling break didn't seem to help the US get any more organized. We'll see what a halftime talk has wrought.

Edit: a minute later, and it's now the most dangerous score in football! And VAR agrees, thanks.

Lots of subs, including Hurtig (hooray!) and Schough (hoo... ray? when she's good, she's good, so let's hope). US sends in The Great Old Ones. [edit]... who, frankly, immediately make Team USA look a lot scarier on the offense.

    On defense, however...

The pundits are now calling this game "propaganda" for Swedish football.

"The best opening match Team Sweden has ever played," says one of the pundits immediately after the whistle blows. And I can't argue with her – Sweden has been notoriously bad in opening matches.

As someone pointed out on another thread, you managed to give a joy to the (non-US) world. :D

This US team is un-recognizable, and they must be in shock, and they seem to not know what to do, opines Dahlqvist (paraphrasing).

    Aame article:
“They found a lot of space on us,” said Rapinoe. “I don’t remember the last time we gave up a goal. So to give up three is not great …"

It was about three months ago (in April, against Sweden). Since Rapinoe put away the PK that saved the not loosing streak and the match broke their winning streak and is the only match under Vlatko (until today) they didn't win forgetting about it may indicate she have some kind of memory problem.

In 2021 so far, all of the 4 goals they've conceded have been scored by Sweden. If you go back a bit further, Sweden only manages 4 out of 5.

I get it to 6 of 7 under their current coach.
    Matches they conceded goals since he toke over;

Opponent Date Result (US goals first) Event
[IMG] Sweden November 7, 2019 3–2 [IMG] Friendly
[IMG] Japan March 11, 2020 3–1 [IMG] SheBelieves Cup
[IMG] Sweden April 10, 2021 1–1 [IMG] Friendly
[IMG] Sweden July 21, 2021 0–3 [IMG] Olympics

And the last two games above is the only USA didn't win under his tenure, so far.

JanBalk, you wrote this in another thread:'
... and that didn't seem like the appropriate place to mention it, because who else on this green earth gives a flip, but brrr, you've just given me the shivers! Bäääälinge (whisper it in a spooky voice)...

Recently there was a long article about them in UNT, and I got to read names I hadn't thought of in a while, like Ulrika Karlsson and Sara Call. And yep, there was Gerhardsson in the article too.

Team Sweden's shocking safety yellow outfits have not been popular on these boards (and today against Australia, they don't even have blue shorts -- it's construction-worker yeller from tip to toe).

However, hard as it is to believe, the outfits Sweden wore during the opening ceremony were even uglier. In the post-ceremony studio analysis, Dahlqvist was brutal and not wrong in her review: 'The outfits were bad, the shoes, even worse.' [paraphrasing 'tråkigt' and 'tråkigare'], Some were in the bright yellow, while others were in what appeared to be Australia green.

Speaking if whom, it's 1-1. Oh, Hedvig, if only you'd stayed on your feet a split second longer. Granted that that Kerr is tricky.

The announcer just mentioned it's Lindahl's 5th Olympics, which is a lot, and I had just harrumphed to myself that maybe Falk should have been given a shot instead, when Lindahl made that flying-ankle penalty save against Kerr. Yep, she's still got it. ('it' includes occasional adventures off her line)

Sweden 4-2 Australia at time of this writing. What is up with this Team Sweden?? Seven goals is more than they sometimes score in an entire tournament!

Tried to watch SWE-AUS after the fact on Eurosport UK, saw a couple of the goals but was surprised to notice that they lost a good chunk of time in the late second half. A jump cut and then it wasn’t longer 3-2 but 4-2. Not impressed. Not seeming worth the £7 sub at this rate. Apparently the live stream was even worse.

I saw pictures, and people were saying things like “Clearly, SOK had to settle for Folktandvården surplus” which is mean, but correct.

I think I see the cycle for Sweden WNT in this Olympic
    First cycle
1- Higher ranked team and former WC champs:3 -0
    2- Australia: 4-2
3- Lower ranked team from one of Elisbeth II outlying countries: 2-0

Second cycle, judging from the first match opponets will score one more goal:
1- Higher ranked team (if home advantage included) and former WC champs:3 -1
    2- Australia: 4-3
3- Lower ranked team from one of Elisbeth II outlying countries: 2-1

So it seems we will beat Australia with 4 to 3 this time and Canada someway will get past US so we can beat them with 2 to 1 in the Final.
Or there is a small possibility that the Olympics isn't as cyclic as I think :)

It makes as much sense as any other prediction. I want it to be true, as it would warm my heart if the USWNT miss out on another final.

I just want to say to the Swedish fans you're very, very welcome that I keep forgetting to watch the matches. May I continue to forget all the way to the very end and take my rotten jinx with me.

It's disorienting. I know like 3 Swedish players and 2 US players? I dunno. I feel like Rip Van Dyke waking up after a decade. "Wait, Norway FINALLY has a 5'10 studly forward? The one I've wanted for almost 18 years? YEEEESSSS. But they don't play for the national team?"

: pulls covers over head and sobs quietly::

I like the "old timers" vibe these boards take when a major tournament comes around.
