An NHL prospect has come out. Predators prospect Luke Prokop on coming out: ‘Being able to truly be who I am’ - The Athletic
@superdave Do you have any legitimate reason why a gay athlete coming out should be discussed in the transgender thread?
1) There's no gays and lesbians in sports thread. (Is there?) 2) It's common rhetorical practice to lump transgender into with gays, as for example with the term "LGBTY." Whether those are legit reasons, I dunno, but they are reasons.
in addition there has been a lot of discussion regarding sports interactions with different sexual identities.
I was referring to Guys and Dolls but I suppose Guys and Guys or Dolls and Dolls don't care for cardboard either. Ps....I Got Nunesd as my post was Mooooved!
Announcement like this kind of stress me out. I recall a football player who came out either in college or pre-draft. He didn't make it in the NFL. He was drafted late and got cut before regular season. The standard for Prokop's level of play is going to be higher than that for a straight player. If he's a success, then this will mean A LOT for young gay kids. But if he's not, it might keep some closet doors shut.
Michael Sam from Mizzou. IIRC, he was too small to be a D lineman, too slow to be an outside linebacker. A lot --I mean, a shitload-- of guys excel in schoolball but run into more talented obstacles in the League. Do you mean the potential for him to be a role model for gay kids? I don't see why you state unequivocally that his standard is going to be higher, or that his play will be judged more harshly. I suppose I can see it happening, but honestly, I think the pro sport has dealt with discrimination in the past and pretty much left it there. I think if the media and his specific fans can just let him play, like they let anyone else play, it might not be a distraction at all...
Nearly every insult men use toward other men is based on calling that person gay. Even the disgustingly ubiquitous and apparently ok to use "butthurt" is at root homophobic. For a gay player to succeed in the uber-macho, uneducated sports locker room, that player will have to have unimpeachable skill above what a straight player would have. There will be a tipping point, for sure, and gay players will not be noteworthy. But we are not even close to that point. I'm sort of surprised that you would extrapolate from color based racism to sexuality based discrimination.
Then they'll have to change their language somewhat. Just like they stopped asking whether a Black guy is smart enough to be a QB. I didn't know "butthurt" was a homophobic slur. Thanks for the heads up. We're talking about the NFL. Whatever you may think of what you know about these guys' majors, they have been to school. Some of them even did well. IMO, he'll have to have the ability to deal with it face to face with the offending player, or Jackie Robinson enough to ignore it. Either way will probably work. If he addresses it face to face, the media will (and should) support him. Because I think the point has been reached where you're not gonna hear the stuff everybody knows they ought not say. And because some of the people are from the same group. There may be soe Black aholes, too, but I don't think you're gonna see any Black Incognotios (not saying Martin is gay, just that Richie was over the top about seemingly everything).
This is one of the old stereotypes that needs to be taken out back and put out of its misery. It ranks up with the whole “soccer players are a bunch of sissies who couldn’t make the football team…” claptrap. I get the point you are trying to make, but no need for the hyperbole, eh? To your point, I honestly don’t think in this day in age the “ dumb jocks” really even care as at a higher level ( even non pro) someone whose play benefits the group even as an average player isn’t worth hassling.
Actually ******** that. You both are speaking out of your asses. My kid came out in a “woke-topia” and was ruthlessly harassed for it and hung out to dry by adults. Pat yourselves on the back and then look up suicide numbers.
I know the world is ********ed up. I've lived in it longer than you have. And your son didn't come out in a "woke-topia" if he got treated like that. Much as I think that term (woke) makes light of the sixth sense POCs need, no such place exists. I don't know what I've said that's untrue, really. I do believe this guy will be okay in the job as long as he can do the job (I don't know if he's a starter or not), and I'm sure he'll have to deal with some kind of verbal insults. I'm not certain that they'll all be directed at him personally, but I am sure he'll have to address them if he wants them to cease. And he's gonna have to bring some folks along. I'm not uneducated, but I didn't know butthurt was an insult. I'm sorry folks are taking your son down through it. Even more so that the adults aren't helping.
Richie Incognito, an NFL player with a long track record of being a total asshole, but is still signed to an NFL team, unlike his former teammate Jonathan Martin, whom Richie harassed into early retirement.
