I’ll also add that, according to Trump, the guy is in Schumer’s security detail. Also consider that Babbitt was shot attempting to break into the Speaker’s Lobby.

Now, I don’t know a thing about the layout of the Capitol Building, but it seems odd to me that a person from the Senate Majority Leader’s security detail would be defending a room outside the House of Representatives…

From a shelter in place / repel intruder standpoint - that whole situation was probably hot chaos for them with conflicting orders from above / lack of response from National Guard, DC Police being slowed. It doesn't strike me as all that odd as they could have been reinforcing the place that was coming most apart

They really are heroes. If MAGA leadership was more coordinated & willing to sacrifice more of their pigfckers, I'm convinced they would've overrun the Capitol security and abducted some Congresspeople

Loving Gen Milley more and more: the man doesn't mince words or ********s around. Not going to be intimidated easily either. Tough yet thoughtful as well, which are basic qualities you want from someone in his position.
Also not wrong in the least to bring up the comparison to Hitler's rise to power in Germany. Often joke around but some things are just eerily similar, not least of which winning the hearts and minds of large sections of the population in backing their crazy ideology.
I used to wonder when I was younger how it was possible for Hitler and the Nazi to get power, especially with the people backing them so fervently, at least in the beginning. Not out of order to claim we're seeing it happen again right before our eyes here in the States, in the 21st century. It's sad...

That's a common thought which occurs to most people, particularly when they're younger, as you say. The thing to remember is they didn't start believing it... they started by believing something different.

The problem is, once you start believing that all our problems are the fault of 'others', whether they're teh jews, blacks, the rich OR the poor, generic 'furriners', whatever... it only ends one way. By ignoring the truth and placing what people want to be true over what is.

That's why I've always maintained there is no GOOD bigotry... there is no POSITIVE nationalism. These are always negatives. Even whilst they might be understandable in terms of a reaction to someone else's bigotry or nationalism. They'll always be a force against truth and objectivity and thus lead to expressions of dark forces.

That was the same with Hitler, with Trump, with Johnson's brexit and, bluntly, with the SNP's refusal to accept ANY blame for things that go wrong in Scotland or how they'd enact Scottish separation without suffering the same sorts of problems we've been having in the UK with brexit.

About 15 years ago I started pointing out here that this appeared to be developing and its similarities to the rise of the third Reich. Couldn't get anyones' attention, and Matt in the Hat dumped on me as a Nervous Nellie because nobody was talking about gassing Jews or locking opposition figures up...

Said it before and I'll say it again-- we owe it to the guys we executed and imprisoned at Nuremburg to pay constant attention to our own house. If "just obeying orders" wasn't seen as an adequate defense for them (as it shouldn't have been) then we have a moral obligation to ensure that the same sort of orders never become prevalent here in our own nation.

The two key elements in the growth of Nazi power were that the German equivalent of habeas corpus was not absolute, and that a separate court system was established to try political crimes, which did not afford much in the way of rights to its accused. Get into power in Germany, and you could do pretty much anything to anybody. The Patriot Act took care of the habeas corpus one here, and military tribunals became the other; we were told they would not apply to American citizens taken on American soil, and then just a few weeks later they did, when Jose Padilla was detained...

I may not be here, or not functionally here all that much longer, so once again I entreat people to pay attention to fundamentals without me; don't think it won't happen here just because it hasn't. Jim Crow should be all the counterargument needed on that...

I've said the same thing since Bush and "the plan for a new american century" - an obvious neo-imperialist project.

of course it is a very american form of fascism, complete with guys in nice suits and media hits and entertainment first - what Frum was calling a form of faux-fascism where the point is criming rather than nationalistic projects

But within a year of him saying that, the nazi's tried a violent coup... so yeah

Deputize your base to drive out the outsiders-- that's what they care about. Draft the patriots to fight wars to defend the nation, extend its influence, and avenge previous defeats-- that's what is closest to their hearts. That keeps everybody too busy to watch what you are actually doing-- tapping the till. Which is what you want.

But yeah, once you have the keys to the vault, you don't want to give them up. "Bill and coup..."

    Two points.

    1. Are you saying you got there first?
    2. It usually starts off with one thing and ends up as something else... that's the problem. If it were a straight line it would be easier to spot?

In the case of Trump the 'guardrails held' but, let's be honest, that was partly down to covid and his idiotic take on it. If not for those, (so, if covid had never happened or if he hadn't been such a clown in his response to it), can we be sure the same thing would have played out?

I mean, yeah, it's possible I suppose but it's also possible he'd have got back in again and continued his, (and the RNC's), attempts to further skew the voting rights of millions of Americans and push the USSC ever further to the right so there would be no consequences.

The fact he was so dumb he was more interested in straight up 'criming' doesn't seem like much of a reason to celebrate, does it.

TBH it'll be interesting to see what happens when the midterms and, even more, the next GE comes because it might be that, unless there are some REAL consequences visited on the co-conspirators in the RNC, they might be someone even MORE dangerous, (read: not a bloody idiot),

I find much dark humor in how various Trump remoras are trying to burnish their reputations, their chances of having their grandchildren not hate them, and their future prospects by being a source for this new book.

Yeah, but that's a poor analogy, since in the circumstances where that one usually gets used, the person being given an order by police doesn't deserve deadly force for not complying. She did.

I keep seeing this take....but when I read those quotes I read an acknowledgment the the secret service was going to fulfill their primary purpose....protecting the VP from harm....against his will if they had to. Not as some part of a grand conspiracy....but as their primary responsibility.

perhaps I’m giving undeserved benefit of the doubt....but people are going to look pretty foolish if Pence and others quoted come out and clarify.
