I’m just wondering how a “check complete” happened as fast as Montero made it seem it happened. It almost felt like he restarted too quickly.
He didn’t even know about the FMF shenanigans over the women’s team, which should be common knowledge for anyone with any knowledge of CONCACAF.
This game and broadcast is approaching peak-CONCACAF. More and more I find the observation of CONCACAF being FIFA's #Pac12AfterDark accurate.
We heard it again right before full-time. Sometimes you have to wonder will concacaf actually pull the trigger and to give Mexico a forfeit.
No. In fact, on replay, the flag didn't even go up until well after the goal, so there wouldn't have been a reason for the referee to blow before that.
You go through all that on the chants only for it to happen worse than ever before at 90+8’. And nothing happens. Either the chants are irrelevant in the match and only something subject to post-match discipline (which would be a totally reasonable standard if it was laid out ahead of time) or they are the purview of the referee, in which case there must be real escalation and you can’t just pretend it didn’t happen when it’s inconvenient. Pick one. And stick to it. But this whole thing of stopping the game once or twice but never actually doing anything with teeth in-game is a total joke. Worst of both worlds. Because it didn’t change behavior and it only frustrates and angers players on both sides. I have very little sympathy for Montero tonight, but on this point he and all the other referees are handed a raw deal.
I doubt it. I figure that's why we never see the CR do anything until after the 80th minute despite the chant being clearly heard in the first halves. By delaying they can run out the clock before being forced to go to stage 3, forfeit.
I still think 79-80’ is the most baffling thing that happened all game. Everything else is normal controversy or explainable, even if I personally disagree. I can’t quite wrap my head around what happened at 79-80’. But ultimately it is changing a corner kick to a goal kick, so I don’t think many people will notice.
The announcers, mainly Dr. Joe, were saying they could review the call on VAR unless the whistle blew before the ball was in the net. They never said that's what happened.
Easy to misunderstand. It stood out to me because of the us women's goal called off recently because of that. And probably what Dr Joe was thinking of when he made that comment
This entire thing is baffling. First, let me state I am for stopping the chant. Second, it is entirely laughable that they get up in arms about the chant, but they can hold a World Cup in Qatar where homosexuality is illegal. Third, I am hoping for a player to “come out” and then sue for being forced to work in a hostile environment. It would be brilliant.
Looking at this again, the broadcast did the freeze frame quite a bit early. If we can find the actual kick point, it might have been a clearer offside decision.
Sounds like I'm going to have to see if the Gold Cup is shown in the UK...! For those asking about concussion substitutions, in the Premier League, they're differentiated by the team making the substitution handing the 4O a green sheet rather than the normal white sheet. The 4O then hands the other team an extra substitution form for them to use.
