Sheffield Wednesday. A club with a proud history that seems to digging themselves deeper and deeper into the EFL these days.
Official Club Statement pic.twitter.com/o8GObuP2iT— Toronto FC (@TorontoFC) July 4, 2021 TFC fire Chris Armas
Curtis can't be too far behind him, especially since he was forced out of NY due to differences with Marsch. It will be interesting to see if Manning can get it right this time.
doubt it. Curtis got a contract extension in March. he probably gets one more chance to hire the right manager
The hiring itself was so strange for a team aspiring to stay at the top of the league. It wasn't worth the risk-reward proposition in the slightest. Probably not worth it for Armas either as he's probably sunk as far as being a coaching candidate in MLS in the future.
Okay, I wasn't sure if he was a Curtis hire or if they were brought in together at RBNY. Looking back at it, it looks like the Curtis hiring was followed a few weeks later with Petke being fired and Marsch being named his replacement, so I still have some questions about how much Curtis had to do with that particular hire.
Curtis was very much seen as orchestrating the Marsch hiring, seeing as it was so controversial at the time. I still remember the meet and greet with the irate RBNY fans who couldn't believe that Petke had been let go: It sure has aged well.
Here's a former MLS manager getting an interesting new job. https://www.espn.com/soccer/crystal...nycfc-bossarsenal-legend-replaces-roy-hodgson
More like DCU fire Chris Armas. 2 wins in 9 against Armas-coached teams. Armas fired both times after losing to DCU. Thx, Jay!
Personally, I think that Armas got a bit of raw deal, considering that he managed the team through a grand total of zero actual home games. Not saying that he's good, but this reminds me if the sort of management that has resulted in the Maple Leafs' not winning the Stanley Cup in 54 years and counting, although their NBA and MLS teams have done a bit better.
Man, I was in the same boat as you, as I tried to be as fair to Armas because the conditions TFC has to play in is not normal but, this is what I (and many others) see as why Armas needed to be fired 1. Trying to implement a high press with a older squad lacking speed used to playing Vanney ball (possession) system. Shows naivety, and through out his tenure, inability to change tactics to fit the reality. 2. The record. You just don't lose what, 6 straight, no matter how tough the conditions are. 3. Man management. Despite what Bradley says, he's lost the locker room. It started with Jozy, who probably said something about Armas's system isn't working and got sent to the corner. But the 7-1 loss to DCU. You can see in the player's body language that they've given up on Armas.
And yet, playing under similar (if not worse) circumstances last season, with much of the same squad, TFC almost won the Supporters Shield. TFC started the season looking quite good, but the longer Armas had the reins, the worse it got. He'd clearly lost support of the clubhouse - and the banning of Altidore - the only healthy DP - remains inexplicable. There was no choice but firing him. MLSE of today, isn't MLSE of the past, and especially not of the Ballard era. Since the corporate restructuring, they've spent the money, Maple Leafs finished top of their division, Raptors won the NBA, TFC has been to 3 MLS cups and lost a Champions League final on penalty kicks. (we won't mention the Argos).
Where does Armas rank on the all-time list of worst manager hires in MLS? Hell, I'm wondering where his PPG ranks all-time with non-interim managers
