He went to a Polish league side for something like $700k in January. Strange decision, but MLS was on an extended break. We would have to pursue him.

Interesting article in The Athletic (my sub hasn't expired yet) talking about how French football is about to have a fire sale on players as the league imploads. I hope DCU is at the ready. I assume our coach speaks some French after that time in Belgium. Could find some decent players for his tactics.

I attended a team practice today at Audi Field. It was short and of relatively low intensity, being the final workout before travelling to NY for tomorrow's match. Not surprisingly, there was emphasis on the final pass and finishing.

I regretted not bringing my little binoculars with me, but I think even with them I would have had trouble identifying some of the players. There was a time when I could recognize every player on the roster, not just by their appearance but by their running styles, mannerisms, etc., but now I have trouble after getting past the obvious ones, e.g., Arriola; Pines; Brillant; Canouse; Paredes (the hair!)....Hopefully, there should come a time when am more familiar with the roster.

Since when has DCU (or MLS as a whole) taken such a proactive stance?

    Thx,

    Jay!

I attended also. Nice they finally did one of these on a weekend when normal people could attend.

Attendance looked to be around 200-250; they put us all in the Eaglebank club seats - would have been nice if they would have let us sit in they Hines-Ike, er, heineken club seats to hear more of what was happening. I suppose that was to limit our potential to be a distraction.

I was surprised the keeper's warmup laps are clockwise while the field players do their warm up laps anti-clockwise (as opposed to running all together).

Humorously, it seems no one at the team told folks at the stadium the team was going to do a practice because the sprinklers turned on. After the second time there some upraised arms/hands; after the 3rd time just shrugs.

Ashton appeared to run much of the drills practice. Losado was vocal

There was a funny moment when someone made a play (I think it was while a couple guys were practicing free kicks and others where sitting and watching while doing warm-down stretching) that drew some applause from the fans and the others started mocking the player by mimicking the applesauce from the fans....

Once over, the entire squad came over to acknowledge the fans - one or two autographed a t-shirt or jersey, tossed down to him. Don't recall seeing Hernan come over though but I may have just missed him and Frutos.

Agreed on it being very difficult to recognize folks! I mentioned to my son they need to put their names on the back of the training jerseys if they do this again...

also, around 12, the sun coming overhead and pouring through roof that will never be completed was a nice reminder of being glad I chose my seats in 126 after reviewing the sun studies of the stadium.

One of the 106.7 TheFan news hits this morning (at 11 AM) mentioned Darryl Dike due to his UVA ties but not Arriola or Pines making the Gold Cup roster.

What makes them even worse is one of the Phlunkies, (not sure which, I think JP) actually regularly goes to DCU games (and I think even had season tics at one time).

One time, years ago, I asked them in person at a happy hour event why they dont even do once-a-week 5-minute segment on DCU or soccer in general. Because not enough listeners and the other fans will tune out, they said. So I took the "if you build it they will come" take. Still, they just rolled their eyes. And when I pointed out that "you talk Bullets all the time but DCU has a higher Season Ticket Equivalency rate than the Wiz, and a higher avg attendance", [and back then it was true for more years than not] there was an uncomfortable pause, and then they shrugged their shoulders.

Except for the WPsst and Channel 7 this town's sports editors are complete failures on covering the most popular participation and spectator sport on the planet.

On one hand, the reluctance of TheFan to talk about soccer and DC United in particular is sad, and you wish they would just to get the sport and club more in the public eye.

On the other hand, these guys are rarely knowledgable about even the sports they do cover. They're mostly yuk-yuk jerks. I'd rather have guys talking about the sport who actually know the sport and tactics, the leagues, the clubs and the players.

The junkies can be fun but they're boomer jocks. Soccer is a joke to those people and would be a net negative for their show.

Talking about DC United would probably kill ratings for the fan. They have to talk about what people in the area care about.

I can't listen to local sports talk. It's bad and just gets worse every year. The hosts are old and constantly recycled. There is more old bro talk than sports talk. The region unfortunately does not have good options.

Well, feel for them. They have to talk about something that might take 30-45 minutes (listen to any competent podcast -- usually on a weekly basis -- that covers any particular sport in much greater depth) and stretch it to 4 hours - 5 days a week. But then again, that is all part of the trivialization of American public discourse and life in general. Sports talk is simply of a type with "24 hours news" and "24 hour business news" which simply begets all sorts of utter bullshit being passed off as "analysis." End of rant.

I listen to a lot local sports radio and, while I hear what you're saying, I don't think it's bad. I like the interviews with players/coaches/GM's/hangers on from the local American football team, basketball team or baseball team. The college game gets talked about, and I'm a big fan of college sports.
But when they start taking calls from the hoi polloi, of which I'm a part of, I turn it as quick as I can to 'mellow gold' or 'freedom rock' or anything else at all. The calls crush any momentum, almost never add anything worthwhile and I just want to jump through the radio and strangle these people who can't put a coherent sentence together. Occasionally, you'll get the radio version of the know it all who starts every sentence with "Listen....". Yes, everybody's listening, you twat! You'll never say anything that hasn't already been said and no one cares if your smart or not! I'm just trying to enjoy my commute of doom just a little.

Well, it's been a rant filled day for this old man. Sometimes I just want to lean into it I guess.
