Im surprised Arena isnt getting one of the other goalies some minutes? Turner will be in the Gold cup and I have to believe they will get offers for him this summer too. We need a Plan B. Maybe if we ever get a chance... roll in another goalie? Im also not sold on Bell as a starter. In one of the excellent saves Turner made, on a shot from the left side of the goal area, the shooter was 1v1 with Turner. Where the Hell was Bell? nowhere to be found. Ive seen him AWOL on several occasions. Kessler saved his bacon with a right arm save. I think Bell and Kessler should be splitting time if Kessler makes the GC final roster

Bell definitely made a mistake or 2. Nowhere near as many or as big as Farrell, but I agree he wasnt perfect.

That said a lot of those chances were some really questionable decision making from Jones. Jones had some nice attacking moments in the 1st half, but all game he was the clear weak spot that NYC generated chances by exploiting.

    1. I do agree that relishing Turner's time as a Rev is important. He is the best keeper we have ever had. It's a little concerning that had Turner not stood on his head, NYC could have scored 5 goals.

    2. On the other hand, I don't agree that Farrell was as bad as people are implying. That PK was a gift after one of the most flagrant dives I've seen all year. The player who seems to be lagging behind expectations to me is Traustason.

    3. The Revs are moving into a territory - being scary, intimidating - I've only seen in other teams. If I were a NYCFC fan, I would be feeling like the Revs were scoring at will.

    4. When Kessler came in for Bou at the end, were we in a 5-3-2 / 3-5-2?

    5. What's the deal with Mafla?

    1) I agree about Turner winning the game. We need a plan B though.... we wont have him long

    2) In my mind Traustason is a bust. He's slow, makes too many bad passes and basically brings little to the table. Never thought I'd say this but Id rather see Teal in for him or Bou...... anybody at this point. Arena has to see it

Definitely a 5-3-2 out of possession. Since both outside backs were forward a lot, it certainly was a 3-5-2 when we had the ball.

Mafla is again injured according to Brad.

    Mafla = glass legs
At least that is what the fans at his previous club called him.

Turner : Echoing everybody's statements. We need a statue of this guy next to Eusubio.
Farrell: Good defender, great guy, fantastic to have on the team. I think we need to start seeing Kessler/Bell paired in the future. That was a dive on the pk no question.
DeJuan Jones reminds me of that dude from the Mighty Ducks who could skate really fast and couldn't stop.
Traustason is frighteningly slow, and has shown some flashes. There was talk about his family getting settled over here and buying a house, so if we're gonna see an increase in his productivity, it certainly wasn't this game, and I think he's earned himself a position on left bench for a few games.

What the hell is going on with Kaptoum?! This guy was supposed to be a magician in the midfield. Is injury holding him back? Is he getting outplayed by Maciel/Polster who weren't anything special during this game?

There was a lot to take out of that game.

Turner really deserves a chance to start at the Gold Cup. His shot stopping abilities are phenomenal.

You could argue about whether or not it was a dive, but what in the F*** was Farrell doing diving in himself on that play?

Great job of finishing by TMac.

Bou's goal shouldn't ever have happened (man, that was weak by Johnson*), but the volley was on net and it was hit hard. Loved seeing it.

Gil got beat up a bit, but he still just stands out each and every game.

Great to see the emotion from Bell after his goal. That was a damn good header on that play.

Jones still seems to struggle at times. Quite a few giveaways on that one.

*The XG stats tell you all you need to know about Johnson in this one (and Turner). NYCFC had a 3.1 XG, Revs 1.8. And yet the score was the opposite.

He is, with Revs II. No way you sit Turner when he is going to be missing even more games. Anyone else in net other than Turner, and the Revs lose this game.

Which brings up the question we discussed at the little viewing we had on Saturday. Who starts? Brad has the MLS experience, but at this point, I wouldn't mind giving Rice a chance. He's actually looked pretty good (from what I've heard) for Revs II.

    Yes, feel the same way.

    ----

Wow, what a frustrating/relieved game to watch. Giving up the lead twice, finding a goal in the end in a game where we generated few chances. Outstanding individual plays by our stars: Gil's pass to get Tajon behind the defense and his dead-on cross for Bell's goal, Bou's audacious volley, Turner standing on his head over and over and Tajon making the clinical low cross for McNamara's winner.

    - that said, I thought it was a very quiet game for Gil (yet, with a couple of assists "... other than that, ..."!).

    - we seemed very scattered overall: some really good play ruined with some really sloppy careless play. Hopefully just rust from the layoff.

    - I'm really wondering whether you can build a championship defense with Farrell at center-back. It's not the talent or skill-level, it's the strange decision-making and 'panic-mode' that keep reappearing.

    - really shaky game for our dmids. Maciel mixed in the good with some really scary passes - very unlike him from what we've seen in the past. Polster makes some strong plays, but also has some really clumsy ones, where he looks like he just doesn't have the agility required for the position. And, he managed to collect the yellow card that he was pretty much begging for (when the ref allows a marginal foul at the other end, is it really smart to commit the same foul + a little extra to test him?).

    - I'm not a big fan of Polster - while I give him credit for some solid defensive plays, his vision is so clearly lacking that he so often leads to unnecessarily slowing the attack and needing to play out under pressure. Yes, sometimes you have to play it back, but it also means you failed to find a way to get the ball to one of the 6 players in front of you.

    - the refereeing was spectacularly bad and mind-blowing. I don't think he had any big calls/non-calls that affected the game (I think the PK call was weak, but didn't get to see the one angle that would have shown it definitively. I think Medina ran across Farrell's planted arm to get himself tripped - which generally gets the call these days).

It seemed like I (and the players) had no idea what was considered a foul in Chapman's head and what wasn't. He was so erratic with his calls that he never established a standard for fouls or cards. Really, just an awful performance.

    - and the Revs commentators were similarly awful - they make my head explode. Rambling on and 'bantering?' about meaningless crap and totally failing to add any intelligent observations. I recall Feldman setting up Davies with a softie (something about what a player can do to get more shots on target or something?) and Davies, a forward with a significant pro-career, had no coherent response?

At one point there was a quality cross that one of our forwards couldn't get to and they blamed the cross - if they actually 'watched' the play, the cross was dead-on, the forward made the right run, but the defender did an excellent job shielding the attacker from meeting the cross. Thanks for the analysis, but totally wrong.

    - Caldwell's first minutes of the season. I actually think he would have been a good choice earlier, where we really needed his steady/unspectacular game.

    - I hope to see Bell and Maciel get chances to shake this one off, but we seem a LOT more composed defensively when Kessler's starting.

    - No Kaptoum on the bench? Injury, international duty - would be nice for our crack broadcasting team to provide a little info

    - I think people are being a little harsh on Traustason, but he's just not quite clicking with the teammates around him - too much zigging when he should be zagging, mis-reading player's runs, etc. I think Arena's being smart to stick with him and things will start to click at some point.

I had a good laugh at halftime when Feldman tried to say we'd played well and set up Arena to agree with him. Putting it politely, Arena didn't agree.

Agree 100% with this. Feldman and Davies are awful and completely detract from the enjoyment of the game. I do the best I can to tune them out but it's not always possible. The Revs need new commentators if they are going to attract a wider audience. I can't wait for that to happen.

I've enjoyed watching the Revs on ESPN+. You get the home team's TV feed. Most of the announcers have been pretty good. They all have their home team bias, but nowhere near the over the top homer-ism of Brad and Charlie. I thought Charlie was out of control during the CONCACAF Tournament, while Clint was just as smooth in the booth as on the pitch.

Some of the away broadcasts have been good. A lot of them are awful though. I have Brad and Charlie solidly middle of the pack, knowing full well that they arent objectively very good

Charlie was out of control and very annoying. Clint on the other hand was funny and I enjoyed his take on things. Charlie basically shot his career in the foot years ago and I cant get past that. Hard to listen to a guy that made such a bad decision

Yeah, I love how Arena is so brutally frank in those 10 second answers (and sometimes he doesn't even show how annoyed he is).

Exhibit A on Feldman: he mentioned at least twice that the game was "three rivers" away from Yankee Stadium. Other than pointing out his knowledge of the geography, what was even the point of throwing that in once, let alone twice? [ Had to look it up, Harlem River->Hudson->Hackensack->Passaic, if you're choosing the straightest path].

I had been thinking about this one. Does anyone feel Farrell could play D-mid in front of Kessler and Bell?
