Oh, how I love the badges of Brazilian football. This one belongs to Recife's Santa Cruz Futebol Clube.
Very direct article from Cincinnati Soccer Talk that points the finger exactly where it belongs: ...FCC arrogantly thought they could do something no one has. Take a USL coach, a USL squad and an NASL general manager into a league and compete. They failed. The mistake was revealed and it was obvious. MLS has a clear style, and while it varies from club to club it is clear. You need people that understand the league in the front office.... ...Instead of identifying the problem of lack of MLS experience, FC Cincinnati tried to re-invent the wheel again. They hired a Dutch GM and now two Dutch coaches to bring in their own players and their own system. They could do what Atlanta United failed to do, make the Dutch way work in America. It is time to admit that is failing.... ...Now FC Cincinnati is headed toward a third straight year in last place. That is massively hard to do in MLS. It is an impressive and unprecedented kind of bad. It all stems from FCC’s arrogance in trying to re-invent the wheel. The club cannot forge its own way. It is time to accept it needs MLS experience in the front office.... FC Cincinnati: Stop trying to reinvent the wheel - Cincinnati Soccer Talk They have really made a mess of things in Cincy and the fans' patience is not limitless. All they ever had to do was look around the league and see what has worked and what has failed. Instead, they marched straight down well-worn failure paths that even casual fans know perfectly well just won't work. The real pity is that the owners have proven that they're more than willing to shell out stupid money for players. Nothing cheap about these guys. What they need to do - and I'm dead serious - is show up at the team offices in the morning and start passing out pink slips. Thanks for your efforts, you've got ten minutes to clean out your desk. Then hire almost anyone with MLS experience and go from there.
As a TFC supporter, I have no sympathy for what FCC supporters are going through. When they have 8 years of mediocrity before getting to playoffs, then maybe I'll sympathize. lol
At least Cincy had the initial excuse of ignorance to fall back on. That, and they'd had some success in USL against MLS teams in the Open Cup (as we know well in Columbus). Beckham in Miami, on the other hand... Back in the day, these kinds of failures let to existential angst among MLS fans, as we worried about our little league, and were concerned that abject failure in a market might taint the overall product. Now I can just sit back and wallow in watching the failure of others, just as the soccer gods intended.
And the thing is that while they keep reaching out to the Netherlands for coaches who don't have a clue, there are several guys with tons of MLS experience that they could take a shot with. Kerry Zavagnin, Pat Noonan, Ante Razov, Ezra Hendrickson, just off the top of my head. Longtime assistants with successful MLS teams. But no, they hire some Voom deVortsgelder who thinks he can recreate Clockwork Orange with US players. Meanwhile, other teams are snatching up the young coaching talent. Josh Wolff, Tab Ramos, Robin Fraser. They were all available and the early results are rather promising. Unlike good old Voom in Cincy.
Anyone got the DL on this guy? Can't seem to find much from a cursory internet search, although I'm not getting billionaire's club vibe from him: Houston Dynamo FC announce Ted Segal as new majority owner | MLSSoccer.com
Three of the most successful coach's in MLS right now were interim coaches. Vanney, Schmetzer and Curtin who also happen to be American. The problem is being sexy right now is more important than promoting from within.
His family is in the energy business so they have a lot of connections in Houston. I don't know if Ted Segal has personal connections here but he certainly knows people who do. Apparently the Dynamo have also just hired Jamey Rootes to join the front office. Rootes was the President and GM of the Columbus Crew back when MLS started. He has been the President of the Houston Texans for the last 20 years so he certainly has local connections. Rootes resigned from the Texans over a disagreement with the owner in the spring of this year.
Great info. Thanks. Rootes was instrumental in getting Crew Stadium built. Of course the league's changed a lot since 1999, but still, it's good to hear someone with MLS in his DNA is connected to the Dynamo.
They don't really even have that excuse - the example (including the compressed start up window, even) of 2017 Minnesota United was right there for them to look at, if they were willing. They chose to ignore it.
They have made some real bonehead roster decisions. All the talk this year was about how they upgraded the offense but they did absolutely no upgrades to the backline. They went out and got Mattarita but he wasn't going to be an upgrade defensively (he is better to me as an attacking fullback). They downgraded at right back and basically held pat at CB. Then they relied on a d-mid that didn't show much last year to be the guy that would clean everything up. Of course Stam then goes and puts Kubo in the midfield and they wonder why suddenly teams are running down their throat. Oh, and to fix that issue they sign a 300 year old American CB and "upgrade" their GK position with a guy that got beat out by a 25 year old Mexican-American at LAFC.

Vermeer is such a bust of a mls keeper. He got like $900k from LAFC too. Who knows what Cindy is paying. it’s not just the defense with him. He makes terrible decisions and the ball goes right through him often.

To be fair, for all of the 60-90 days jokes, Red Bull Arena did eventually get built, and Nick Sak even got another stadium across the line in Philly. I will try to maintain optimism.
