Notably, A. Roldan is on the 60-man roster but not on this pre-tournsmemt friendly. Perhaps he still hasn't committed to the switch or the paperwork hasn't been completed?

He's never played for the US, so the only thing that could hold it up is his Salvadoran passport. It's also possible that he wasn't going to be released by his club for a friendly (you'll notice not many of the new US duals are in this squad).

The dual national game in the future will be more about keeping US-born players with dual-national roots than recruiting foreign-born players with US eligibility. A less fun and more defensive task by its nature than but a mark of our rise in the world game.

Will be rough when a small nation like El Salvador caps someone at 18 that might turn out to be a real baller at 25. (Saying that generally, not that we've actually lost anyone that would be a real baller for us at the next 2-3 World Cups.)

The shift to 48-team World Cups for the foreseeable future is huge for everyone, certainly for CONCACAF. It's the biggest game-changer that I can see -- it means more games that matter for more teams, which makes their programs more attractive.

It probably raises all boats -- top talent will still be drawn to top programs, lesser talent will leave earlier, everyone will have to become a rules expert -- and it'll be really interesting to see whether the competitive balance really changes in an interesting way in the region over the next decade.

I still think that if most of your plan is recruiting, you're leaving a lot to chance -- which is why you want to see where the professional game is evolving to guess where long-term change might happen. Canada is one I'm watching, though they're not a massive recruiting threat to the U.S.

Romero is 20 and doesn't have much of a pro resume because ... he's 20. Mario Gonzalez is just 24, and seems solid -- or, at least, the program thinks so, since he got the nod during Olympic qualifying. I'm not shocked that an American-born and raised player, especially at his position, might hold off for now, particularly to be a backup. He's presumably got a long career ahead of him.

Meantime, he got some great experience along the way. And it's a reminder that recruiting isn't a one-way street for the smaller CONCACAF programs.

Is it correct that Romero would need to file a switch to play for us, and Moreno wouldn't need to to play for El Salvador?

Both players would need to file a switch. Moreno played for the US in the 2015 Concacaf U20 qualifying tourney. Romero played for ES in the 2021 Olympic qualifying. Both are provisionally cap-tied.

Hugo Perez on the 4 U18 players he called into camp (guess the Salvadoran squad is headed to Croatia next):

According to Pérez, for the tour to Europe, he will release a list and the under-18s will not travel to Croatia. "They join us today, they go to train on Friday, they go to watch the game, on Sunday they train with us and on Monday they train with us and go home. None of them go to Croatia."

The national coach also said that he has received some criticism for summoning U-18 players to face Guatemala in a friendly.

"It is important that these players feel that we take them into account, Mexico and the United States do the same. Someone said that we are disrespecting Guatemala because we are under 18 players, I do not disrespect anyone, simply that there is young players and I think they have a future for our team and we want them to come and meet the federation, the coaching staff, the national team, the players and feel part of it. " explained.

No U18s in the Guatemala friendly.
