Players like ESR can play as an 8/10 player in a 1-2 midfield though, I think. Odegaard too, probably.
It might take a season to get it right, a season Arteta doesn’t have to devote to an experiment, but Saka and Smith-Rowe would probably work as dual 8s.
Saka doesn't wanna play in that role. He greatly prefers playing wing and he is quite good at it. I'd rather not put him in a position he doesn't want as it could push him to want a move if/when we don't rebound quickly. If we were to make the switch to a 4-3-3 (6 with 2 8/10s), ESR would definitely be one of the 8/10 options. Internally you could potentially play Azeez, Willock or Cottrell there but none are ready to start next to ESR. Main link that I think fits there is Aouar or Maddison.
I'm beginning to see why some of my non-footie friends get up in arms when I talk about positions in soccer, seeing as all this chatter about variations in formation and how players can or can't adapt to different positions just makes it all seem more needlessly complex than it should be. "Yeah but he's not a true shortstop. He plays more like a false shortstop that sometimes cheats deep and plays as an extra third baseman."
Saka has the legs for that role but he is infinitely better as a right attacker cutting in esr might have the motor but I like him in an advanced position finding midfielder runners my personal choice would be a more rounded striker that can play across the front line with martinelli left, esr ten and saka right wing maybe Pepe can become a great forward? He’s also a good left attacker too a complete midfielder with good running ability makes this team next level to partner partey and with a better right back we are strong
The 4-3-3 with inverted fullbacks can look like the 4-2-3-1 with one inverted fullback when you are in attack, because either way you want a 2-3-5. 4-3-3 in attack: LW---8---ST---8---RW ----LB-----6----RB--- -------CB-----CB------ 4-2-3-1 in attack: LB---LW---ST----10----RW ------8------6/8-----RB ---------CB------CB The major difference is in personnel. To me, the 4-3-3 requires more new signings this summer than is realistically possible, but a 4-2-3-1 with one inverted FB isn't all that different than what Arteta was playing at the end of last season except mirrored, with Ceballos playing a right-sided 8 and Xhaka as an inverted LB. And instead of just copying Pep, I'd love to see Arteta come up with his own innovation or twist that gives Arsenal a strategic advantage.
The real key whether you go 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 is to ideally have FBs that are capable of being inverted or wide so that you can more easily vary the attack. To me that is even more important with our wingers because all of them are prone to cutting inside meaning it would be ideal for either FB to be capable of providing width.
Lazio supposedly have offered approx 17m GBP for Torriera to be paid in 2 installments, half now half next summer.
Jump at it. If Arsenal can only get 15 for Xhaka in this market, 17 for Torreira sounds like good business. The only players not being discounted in this market are those with a home grown surcharge, players teams desperately want to keep, and players like Haaland.
Starting to see some claims that we plan to loan Saliba to a lower half EPL squad where he is likely to get lots of playing time next season. So far the only EPL team mentioned as having interest is Newcastle. Would rather see him stay but if he is guaranteed games in the EPL a loan could be a positive option to earn him a spot the following season.
I’m not a fan of this scenario, but if Arsenal do buy White, Brighton might be a good loan destination. He can learn from Dunk and Potter.
Loaning a £28m signing for the first 60% of his contracted years would be incredibly dumb. We will have to re-up before he’s played a single game for us to preserve his value. We have to play him this season or sell him now.
Agreed. Add to that the ridiculousness of lumping a ton of money for White when we have Saliba here already and have significant needs in other areas of the pitch makes this scenario really dumb.
According to Guardiola, positionally it depends on the zones they occupy So with wide forwards he has used like Ribery, Robben, Sane - he's tended to ask them to stay high and wide to make the field big (of course then they will head towards goal or try to get on to diagonals). In such a case the fullback will then play narrow and underlap the winger. This means the fullback can help stablise the midfield Tierney and Saka are an ideal combination to illustrate this - the most important thing is the positional discipline and spacing - that's where Arsenal have really suffered in recent years May I introduce you to the club known as Arsenal?
Fun rumor of the day... El Gol claims that Atletico Madrid is looking at buying Thomas Partey back because Simeone can't find any good alternatives to fill the hole left by Partey's departure.
I'm told that William Saliba is assessing his options ahead of Ben White's likely move to Arsenal. The 20-yr-old is expected to return for pre-season training - but loan move is the probable outcome now.Newcastle, Nice, Marseille & others want him.https://t.co/7NvQDCiz1S— Chris Wheatley (@ChrisWheatley) June 22, 2021 Replies are VERY pro Saliba. fans no happy with Arteta or the club in this situation.
Fabrizio Romano has Arsenal rekindling interest in Edmond Tapsoba. If true I see two possible explanations. Either they feel the price for White is to high and have decided to move on (to a more expensive defender), or they are playing games with Brighton trying to get them to lower their price. The thing is, I think Brighton have set the £50+m fee because they don’t want to sell him. So if they are trying to get Brighton to lower their price, it may not work.
This is gonna be the shit show tranfer of the window... 1. Player we dont really need + other positions that are significantly bigger need 2. Big price tag 3. Real & PSG supposedly expressing interest 4. Player telling friends/family that he wants to / is going to Arsenal 5. We express interest in a more expensive player to convince his team to "get desperate" and lower the price.
I know its the wrong age profile but Marcel Sabitzer is said to be available for £15m. I could see him as a very valuable piece towards getting back to top 4 quickly. Can play DLP, 8, 10 or wing. Can play possession or pressing counter. Would fit well in both 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Would have been better to snag him 3-4 yrs ago but he can still bring something for the next 3-4 yrs atleast.
I'd really like to know how much of the £28m fee has been paid to St. Etienne. How much was add-ons - you have to assume none of the add-ons have been achieved. Was the payment structured in installments that are triggered by league appearances? It's one thing to sell a young kid like Donyell Malen and see him blossom into a £30m+ player at a lower league. Imagine Saliba is loaned with an obligation to buy (as mentioned in the Wheatley article) at a PL club like Newcastle and Saliba blows up and has a great season. Arteta and Edu would look like fools and their jobs would have to be on the line for that decision alone. Which either means they are really confident that Saliba isn't good, or they are clueless.
He's been teasing a change to the no 5 shirt he wore at Atletico, doesn't seem like he is planning on moving. Certainly plays into the all CB/no MF formation Arteta seems to be plotting. Ramsey's agent went on twitter to shoot down rumors that he wants to return to Arsenal. Saw a couple Calvert-Lewin rumors, his agent is probably trying to get him a new contract. He's only on like £20k a week. Villa supposedly preparing another bid for ESR. Again, I could see his agent asking Villa to make bids to convince Arsenal to offer a better contract.
