Yeah, no reason to start him with Grealish, Saka and Sancho in need of minutes. Having said that, it would be nice to see him or Grealish tried through the middle.

Can anyone explain why Denmark are playing in front of a full stadium despite vaccinating a lower proportion of the population than us?

I hope it’s wrong, John Cross was saying Bellingham could replace Mount... that’s three DMs ffs.

mid Mount is out it has to be Grealish surely. Sancho has to get minutes too. It should be a game where we just go hung ho for confidence, we’ll be facing a big boy next round so let’s just go and attack and give them something to think about.

if Southgate doesn’t go with an attacking mindset tomorrow the fans will turn against him, mood will be down and we’ll go into the R16 game in a bad way. I can’t see why he wouldn’t attack tomorrow but I won’t hold my breath.

Mount isn't definitely out though. It's precaution isn't it? Or is he out for this game and back for the second round. If he misses the next two games how is that so as he hasn't been confirmed with covid

That would be ridiculous. It seems like a bit of a stupid rule, to be honest, and I don't really blame the Scots for treating it with the contempt it deserves.

I realise this seems like I’m derailing but bear with me… if we’re at home for the last 16 it would lift the team to have a full stadium as you saw for Denmark today.

Well, it's the scum newspaper so par for the course. After all, they've been doing it to our lads for decades... why should the jocks miss out on their 'help'.

Incidentally, the "close contact" that can require you to self-isolate for 10 days has to fit one of these definitions:

    • (a) having face-to-face contact with someone at a distance of less than 1 metre,
    • (b) spending more than 15 minutes within 2 metres of an individual, or
    • (c) travelling in a car or other small vehicle with an individual or in close proximity to an individual on an aeroplane;
1405992835069923333 is not a valid tweet id

    No close contacts though, right?

Just been thinking about a few things, I find it quite ironic that Southgate has worked so hard to try and get rid of this fear factor of playing for England, weight of the shirt etc and at one stage I think he had done well with it but I wonder if he himself has unwittingly fallen into the same mindset many of his players had for years and is now afraid to lose, hence why we are seeing such a pragmatic, safe approach from him. It can’t be easy for the players to play freely and without fear when it seems the manager now has the same mindset and they probably sense it also.

It was around 60% capacity for the last two games, and 35% for the opening game. They are basically where we would have been if the delta variant hadn't spread and lockdown restrictions had been lifted this month.
Whether they see an increase remains to be seen.

I see what you're saying but I don't think we're back to the days of the wally with a brolly or drawing with Algeria under capello or losing to Iceland under Hodgson.
I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say I think southgate is playing for draws to avoid the big boys in the next round. He did it against Belgium in he world cup too, it's no coincidence.
I think before the Scotland match, everyone was pretty happy with how we played against Croatia. OK it wasn't 3 or 4 nil but we were never gonna beat Croatia by that amount. You have to win the midfield battles against them and we didn't that perfectly. Just because we had a bad draw against Scotland, doesn't mean we're crap all of a sudden.
Southgate has created a club mentality within the camps and the players love playing for him. I understand your concerns but I think you're reading too much into the negativity after one bad game.
All the big teams have had a result like that thus far, apart from Italy.

You'd think the FA is secretly paying them to ask these easy questions.

Germany scored all their goals against Portugal using Gossens and Kimmich to bomb forward in order to use the open space.

Might be best to finish third since:

We'll play Holland, but get the winner of Denmark-Wales.

This idea that England are playing for second seems to be taking on a life of its own but isn't actually what happened in the world cup. England merely rested players against Belgium, as Belgium also did, because both teams were qualified and it really didn't matter as a game.

There's a big difference between resting your players because the game doesn't matter and actually actively trying to avoid winning. Particularly given it is pretty questionable to say right now that finishing second would actually be better than first.

Unlikely that we'd have the option of finishing third even if we did decide to throw the game. It requires Scotland to beat Croatia pretty handily too.

Just a small point... If Mount and Chilwell are forced to self-isolate for 10 days (starting on the day after they had contact with Gilmour), then they'll be shut away until the end of next Monday. Finishing 2nd in the group means that our R16 game falls next Monday, but winning it means that we play on the Tuesday.

It's probably a bit moot as I can't imagine Southgate throwing either player into the starting line-up without them having trained with the team for a week, but they could at least come off the bench.

If Mount and Chilwell have to self isolate then it’s the biggest but most typical act of self-sabotage.

Not necessarily self-sabotage. I agree that it's an irritatingly inconsistent rule, but it may be that their long conversation in the tunnel was witnessed and confirmed by third parties. It may even be that Gilmour has confirmed that contact but kept quiet about any contact with his Scotland teammates, but probably unfair to jump to conclusions about that...

  24. If Cross is right, Southgate certainly is sticking to his guns

England teenager Jude Bellingham is on standby to replace Mount if he is not available with Southgate set to stick with his front three of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden.

Chilwell was not guaranteed of a start but was in contention while Harry Maguire may also come in for Tyrone Mings
