I took Vito not playing solely as a result of it being the last game at HCS. William and Mensah have much more emotional attachment to that stadium. It seems to me that if healthy Williams, Mensah and Vito will split time (with Mensah getting the most minutes).
There is absolutely nothing we've seen thus far to indicate anything of the kind. Vito doesn't rate to Caleb. Else he'd be playing.
Yeah, Josh is clearly first choice in that role now. I'm guessing that shutting out Seattle in an MLS Cup Final sealed the deal. At least for a while. That said, we are going to be playing a lot of mid-week games for the rest of the season. There's no reason to think Vito might not get some starts simply due to the need to rotate the roster to keep players reasonably fresh.
I've got nothing against Vito. In fact I think a lot of him. But what has he proved? Week after week Williams leaves his heart on the field and the team wins when he's out there. I'm a firm believer in the old sports rule that you don't lose your job due to injury but we're way past that now. Now it's prove it time, and Williams has brought the goods and the results are on the scoreboard.. There is no.other criteria. If Vito or anyone else want his job they're going to have to take it. And Vito, God love him, has not taken it.
There were a lot of words in that article for not really saying much, huh? I am very pleased to learn, though, the new league will be activating some programs!
Lot of good roster news from last week and this. In terms of availability, Molino got on the field for the first time vs Chicago. Francis played some. Hairston made the bench, as did Vito. Room should be back for mid-week. In terms of performance, I know Chicago stinks, but Zardes's shoulder looked better. Fraser looked more than competent. Tiny Vampire looked lively. And Etienne's first touch on the second goal was sublime. And Santos beasted out at LB. Abdul-Salaam again looked competent. We got good contributions from everyone, with some guys who figure to be down on the depth chart a bit. I heard Kitchen & Valenzuela are improved and getting close. Artur & BWP cannot be too bad if they sat in Nordecke. That would be everyone save for Morris, right?
As for the Vito/Josh thing, I have been firmly in the camp that said once healthy & fit, Vito would start. I gotta admit, that is not looking like the case. And it is hard to argue, given Josh's stellar play (aside from at Monterrey), and Vito's lack of history at the club. Given the upcoming congestion, there should be squad rotation. Though with games vs Philly & NE looming, I'd much prefer a 3 man CB rotation of Mensah, Williams, and Wormgoor. Keep Keita and Lillard out of it if possible. Or for games vs teams that stink or aren't as impactful. Let us make a run at the SS/top spot in the east.
Two thoughts: 1) Josh's want to play well and win FOR COLUMBUS is that little something extra that lands him on field each week. Mensah even has a little of that and I think truly was a factor in propelling the team to championship. 2) Josh has shown to pick up injuries from time to time over the years. This may be one of his longest spurts without one - he did go down for a minute in this last game. So it is very likely Vito will be needed. I feel much better knowing he is available over Keita. Although I do want to continue to see Keita get minutes when possible so he can keep developing.
Little-Used Dick Loaned Out "Columbus Crew announced today that it has loaned goalkeeper Eric Dick to USL Championship side Indy Eleven for the 2021 season. Columbus retains the right to terminate the loan at any time."
Porter said Artur is dealing with chronic osteo pubitis and #Crew96 are hopefully he’s only out a couple more weeks. Bradley Wright-Phillips has a strain and is also probably a couple of weeks away.— Patrick Murphy (@_Pat_Murphy) June 25, 2021 In news you don't like to hear.
It's too late now, but I take back all mocking I once directed toward former TB Mutiny forward Alan Prampin, who showed up on the MLS injury report back then suffering from "pubic bone stress."
Sanch is not practicing. Guessing he will be doubtful. Maybe time to play a 4-3-3 with Lucas on the left.
To put some reference to this, a number of #Crew96 players are watching on the sideline, including Gyasi Zardes. Given the team already did a training earlier today, this is probably cautionary for the guys who have played a lot of minutes.— Patrick Murphy (@_Pat_Murphy) June 30, 2021
Caleb Porter told us tonight that Josh Williams still has a tight Achilles and Pedro Santos is dealing with a tight hamstring.Kevin Molino and Derrick Etienne are already with their national teams for the Gold Cup and Gyasi Zardes leaves soon. #Crew96— Patrick Murphy (@_Pat_Murphy) July 1, 2021 Sounds like we are going to be very short handed next few games
What else is new? Molino is a perfect example of what's wrong with the FIFA system. He's a guy who signed for a million bucks with the Crew, then got hurt in training, never set foot on the field while soaking up rehab week after week, month after month with the team getting nothing in return He's finally getting back into shape and the coach sacrifices a lineup spot to him so he can acclimate himself to the game and his teammates, he contributes nothing at all while playing himself back into shape and now, as he's getting close to maybe making a contribution to the club footing the bill for all.this, which desperately needs him, off he goes to play some games for a no-hope team for no good reason where he'll be used and used until he hurts himself again and get sent back to Columbus for more rehab. It's beyond ridiculous. This shit has got.to stop.
Diaz was not a full go in training. They had some random guy at striker who made a nice goal. They had a few academy kids too. Looking like matan and Hairston start on the wings. Kitchen looked good.
Jesus Christ, I can't remember a team that's been decimated by injuries like this. I'm uneasy about this game on Saturday. New England is a tough matchup even with our best 11 on the field. I don't get the sense that Valenzuela can go 90 at LB and Wormgoor still seems like a liability against the counter. Keita is a big drop off from there at either position. I get the feeling we're going to need some big saves from Room. Nagbe is also going to need to push forward and attack if we're going to create enough scoring chances to win. If he doesn't, we're stuck again with Lucas trying to beat three or four defenders by himself.
