He is also a year removed from leading the best defense in La Liga. It’s not unheard of to believe he has some left in the tank.

I do think it’s the right business decision given the context of our depth at the position, but it’s a cold decision nonetheless.

Last season was really rough for him but I still think he had something to offer. What we'll never know is how he'd transition in the last year or two of his career here having to be on the bench and make way for the younger talent in the squad or would he remain a guaranteed starter once healthy.

That said this still feels surreal since I always felt he'd retire here. Watching all the pictures and tributes to him across social media is really doing my head in.

I think the month long break in between to rest and recover might have had something to do with it.

He's been playing on cortisone shots for years, at some point it's either going to do major damage on him, or he's going to have to take breaks.

Got this (his) team over the league title line both defensively AND offensively actually, and agree with the second part

I know man and that's why I'm so happy for Modric at his age to continue at Real but if it's really true(which I'm not saying it is bc we just can't know) that he decided to accept the 1 year deal and it was gone thats kinda messed up.

The rumor of him asking players not to accept the 10% decrease has to be true. That can be the only explanation for me. If it is its arguably justified.

Club had to plan ahead at some point with Ramos insisting on a two year deal until last week. Couldn't have kept both Ramos and Varane once we signed Alaba. Now there seems to a keen attempt to renew Varane.

This might be it. Club might have pulled its offer to Ramos once they made a formal renewal offer to Varane, and they still don’t know if he’s going to take it or what his counter is going to be.

But in that case I’m not sure why a final decision on Sergio had to be made now. I still think that if Varane isn’t inclined to renew we were easily best served by signing Ramos for another year and selling Varane. And even if Varane is interested in staying he now has a lot more leverage in the negotiations than he would’ve otherwise.

This seems more personal to me.

ABC had an article recently about how exhausting Ramos renewals has been for Flo and JAS. Starting with 2015 saga with negotiations lasting over a year and club caving into the threat of him joining Utd, then him asking club to consider China deal on free transfer in 2019 and this one dragging on. It obviously became personal and club also saw life without Ramos isn't a disaster as it had been in the past CL knockouts with Militao and Nacho playing really well.

Ramos is one the biggest club legends this club will ever see.

However, 35 years old, recent injuries, media stories of how he’s told players to not take a cut, usual renewal bullshit with his brother… a one year deal was the best he’d get and he blew it.

I’m sure there will be some regret there looking back.

We gave him a farewell as good as can be under current covid circumstances.

We gave Ramos a platform for him and his family , we gave to each other.

Ramos will be back in a few years. Maybe ambassador role like Roberto Carlos if he's not into coaching youth teams.

I think he's tailor made to be either a President or a Coach. Charisma, personality, Madridista through and through, and a brilliant football mind.

Yeah agreed, I don't doubt that he can give another 1-2 years of top shelf football. Thing is, we couldn't gamble for two years given the anchors of Bale, Hazard, Marcelo and Isco.

    Why?
He is spot on. We are Real Madrid. You want to retire here, be ready to retire one year past your peak. If not the club will look to strengthen your position.

The club offered a contratar to Ramos. He turned it down, asked for more. The club did not budge. Ramos told the club to think of a future without him. Club once again said the offer was there for the taking. Ramos said no. club started looking at Alaba. club kept reminding Ramos contract extension was still there. Club signs Alaba to replace Ramos. Club removes contract offer from Ramos. Ramos said he would accept the original contract. RM said it’s to late. Ramos cries.

As I have already said, for me he is the best capitan and CB in the history of the sport. No doubt. But the sequence of events leads me to believe Florentino was 100% right this time.

Ramos to me looks like coach material. I don't think he has a cool enough head for the president's seat. That's a Raul position.

The 10% thing hearkens back to the Raul years where the inmates were running the asylum or even Iker's stint with the whole mole thing. It's the locker room working against the interests of the institution.

I wonder if this Ramos situation has a connection to Zidane's departure.

that would be bad.. but right now it is a rumor.. Ramos actually said in his las RM PC that he decided to stay and accept the 1 year offer but the club said, "too bad, now it is too late. ". we would be calling him a liar if that was not true.

I mean you can tell from the farewell interview he wasn't trying to burn any bridges. We parted ways respectfully and had we been able to pack the Bernabeu I'm sure our club would've done it in a heartbeat. Even he said it's more a "see you later".

His time has come. Father time is undefeated.

If you check his IG stories he has a picture with almost every single player in the squad and some past legends too. Quite surreal.

    1. There is rarely ever a contract offered which doesn’t have an expiration date. This is standard practice across most sports and business. Absolutely no need for fans to feel any kind of way about that unless you’re a child. From rumors it looks like they gave him until end of March to sign before the offer would expire. Again, this is standard practice.

    2. Sergio has always played the business side of things as business, his brother has used many tactics which are also industry standard (as much as we abhor them) to get the max out of the club. It’s not personal. An example of the opposite was Zidane. He’s collectively left 40M euros on the table from ending his contracts (first as a player and then coach) without demanding a severance. Most people deal with it the way Sergio and his brother have and there’s nothing wrong with that.

    3. His relationship with the club, president is fantastic from what he said. There’s no reason for fans to be upset on his behalf when he isn’t. The club called his bluff and he had a lousy hand. There’s no shame or disrespect when it’s just business.

    4. Moving on from people who you have a lot of admiration, respect and love for is supposed to be hard and painful. Endless posts here saying we need to end the cycle of this glorious squad and build a new squad, this is part of it. It’s not supposed to be painless.

I said two years, not five, right?

And I'm not nostalgic, I can handle losing all veteran players including Marcelo, Benzema, Varane, Isco, Modric, Kroos, Lucas, Hazard, Mariano, Carvajal, Hazard, Asensio.
Keeping Ramos and Casemiro, and maybe Nacho and Courtois, as role models because of their leadership qualities and especially strong characters is essential when the club hopefully tries to develop the young talents we have

A good leader passes down the skillet. We're in good hands with Benzema, Casemiro, Kroos, Carvajal and even Modric for next season.
