The final score is: 1 - 3 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G P.S. = Please don't post results of other soccer (including MLS) games and other sports' games in this thread until at least 24 hours after they've ended.
Oof... The Quakes are in one of their patented death spirals. The only silver lining is that 1) they actually managed a few wins at the beginning of the season rather than actually starting the season in a death spiral, and 2) they aren't getting blown out quite as badly. The problem is that they now have a run of road games and this could get ugly. Again, I'm going to bide my time and count the losses until Almeyda plays the Judson-Remedi-Yueill midfield. There's no good reason that I know of that Judson is not playing. If he's not 90 minutes fit yet (after 2+ months?), then start to work him in. Chofis should only be used as a sub when you need a goal. Only positives from this game I can think of: - I liked what I saw from Benji. I'd put him ahead of Rios at this point. - TT played the best game I've seen him play in a long time. Very lively on both offense and defense, and even got a little bit of the flair back. Hadn't seen it in a long time. - I thought Marie did pretty well.
Shit! SHIT!!! Fire Matías and Jesse, first thing in the morning. We suck, this is hopeless, and our coach sitting on his ass in the first half and yelling at the guys is inexcusable. If them both, first thing in the morning. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
another embarrassing defeat. another embarrassing season. Why week after week and season after season I think things will be different? This organization is a train wreck and I don’t see that changing in my life time. One fluke season (2012) and nothing else in 14 years.
The guy Almeyda wanted but didn’t get: 3 The guy Almeyda was given: 1 Ríos was completely useless. The scene which he was face down on the ground missing the header should be made into meme and be included in every new thread here. I want a full refund for the last 2 home games. I will give them a break on the Seattle game.
I feel bad for those of us who waste 2-hours of our lives watching the games on TV. And I feel bad for those who spend money and time attending the matches. and I feel bad for the players on the team that give it their all but more often than not come up short. Hopefully JT, Cade and a few others will move on to greener pastures.
I’d rather just play with ten than have Rios out there. I’m waiting for JJ to tell us we don’t understand soccer, because he’s so quality, but to me he’s an utter waste of space, cap, and air. that’s the only positive I can take from this game.
There were a few solid minutes in the first half. Very few. After missing too many "sure thing" goals, culminating with the Rios abomination, doom settled over the stadium. It's painful to see them lose, less painful on television.
I can't defend him in this game. He was terrible - uninvolved and late to everything, and that miss was an embarrassment to humankind. But I don't form my entire opinion of a player based on one game out of 40. I'm a weird kind of fan that way. Anyway, he doesn't work well as the lone forward. Better off in midfield. Don't know why Wondo didn't start.
It's all on the coach. I get it; he's stubborn -- professional coaches usually are. But he's insisting on a style of play that isn't effective in MLS and might even damage the prospects of some of our more promising players. (I can't blame Rios for being Rios. But who decides to keep playing him?)
Yep...it's not like this team doesn't create chances. The players we have just aren't consistent enough in finishing
This is not on the coach...the players aren't good enough. They get to the front of goal and instead of taking a shot in two touches like SKC, they need 3-4 to set themselves up.
We moved the ball well and looked good early, then got caught out on the counter...possible Cowell- marie mix up on the left flank...they tied it which took all the momentum out of the game for us. The game was one of the most wide open games I've seen in a while at that point...both teams getting some great looks. Then Rios has the whiff of the century. IF he puts that in the game dynamic completely changes...but he doesn't and they go ahead...real back breaker. Then we have to open ourselves up even further and chase the game again at home...argh!! Another game where we get opportunities but can't put them away and the game unravels from there. At that point we have no chance to defend against Pulido, Salloi and Busio on the counter...we're sliced and diced. We don't have the players in defensive transition to deal with their speed and quality...game over. We're giving up dumb silly goals which puts us behind the 8 ball...the roster isn't strong enough to perpetually claw back from a deficit. When the game was wide open we looked decent on the attack We looked terrible dealing with the counter...kind of a jekyl and hyde game. With the long road stretch coming up, Almeyda needs to make an adjustment quickly to prioritize the defense to stabilize the team. For me that would be a healthy dose of Judson. I would also give Alanis more time to rest is knee. I thought the Flo-Beason combo was more cohesive and lively...better defensive awareness. We're just a mediocre to poor defensive team right now and it is absolutely killing our chances to get a result
I think some things are lost in the translation, but I'm not sure what Matias is saying here. I think he's saying we had chances but blew them. And in fact he kind of doubles down and implies that they had "few chances" but scored and we had "many opportunities" but did not. I think that's being pretty charitable. If anything it was relatively even. Surprisingly though our xG was a little higher (1.7 to 1.5). “Today we saw how things are, and we need to get the most out of every player. We believe in every single one of them. It becomes a problem for me when opportunities are not being created, and that’s when you realize we are making too many mistakes. It’s a part of the game and part of being human to make mistakes sometimes. When you make mistakes up top, you don’t convert. To have the opportunity to try and convert results from a buildup. I will have to make a deep analysis on that. We played two big teams in our last two matches in which they had few chances and still scored. We had many opportunities but did not score. Over the last three weeks, we were scoring three goals, four goals and two goals. That will return. We had an excellent start but after these losses, we need to quickly make changes.”
I agree - the Rios miss was a huge match-altering shift. If it goes in, we go up, and we can sit back a little more and hit them on the counter with Cade and Espinoza running into some space. But having it go the other way, down 2-1, now we have to chase it, they pack in a little and nullify our speed on the wings, and can exploit gaps in our defense.
A great coach figures out a strategy that minimizes the team's weaknesses and plays to its strengths. And isn't it the coaches job to work with the players on taking shots? Remember, this is the guy who kept Vega as keeper long after it was clear to everyone that Vega was not working out.
