however, he does need seasoning, everybody does! But the finishing part of his game is already quite tasty.
That alone is good enough as to why someone will take him. Finishing is the toughest thing to do I the game. Also, he is an extreme bargain as a striker.
And he’s in [emoji631] Blessed and thankful to represent the USA!Many thanks to@s04 @s04_us @BondMG1 @knappenschmiede @AnnaHoppe8 https://t.co/6giHlb89ge— Matthew Hoppe (@MatthewHoppe9) May 20, 2021
I know some don't like him, but Tactical Manager, who has some connections, is reporting Schalke are seeking 9-12 million for Hoppe, but are only receiving offers half that. The bigger club offers are for their reserves to start out (can still be considered a prospect at his age) and upper NL types would use him as a regular but not necessarily starter so aren't ready to pony up the type of money Schalke wants. So Hoppe could remain at the club in the 2 BL. And honestly that wouldn't be the worst thing. He's not very established still & he may get much better service. We still don't know what Schalke would look down there. They could tumble to lower leagues like Kaiserslautern or 1860. Or they could be like one of historically bigger clubs who bounce right back after relegation. Though if he kills it in the 2 BL, even if they get promoted, he should move at that point.
They might be holding expecting lower PL teams offers that could come after Hoppe playing in a couple NT games.
I suppose he may get closer to the ballpark if he has a good Gold Cup in July-August and gets the requisite caps for a WP. But that was apparently where we're at right now. I'm still relatively agnostic when it comes to Hoppe's abilities, outside of mentality & scoring instinct. Everything else is a question. And we may get some of those answers this summer.
"outside of mentality & scoring instinct" I'd take a player who I feel comfortable with if these were the only 2 traits I knew of. A manager/coach/scout normally will evaluate a player on 4 characteristics: Technical Ability Tactical Awareness Physical Aspects Mentality The easiest to judge is Physical, then Technical, then Tactical. The toughest one to judge is Mental. You have to really know the player and put them into them. An eyeball just is easy as is a 30 meter test. The mental part though requires time and understanding of the player. If you are solid with his mental part, that is a BIG box checked. If you like his scoring instinct that is another BIG box checked. Those two points are some of the harder items to find in a player. To find those traits in a striker is especially important and needed. No need to major in the minors when this is what you want in a striker. Some things just can't be taught. Just put the ball in the back of the net!
Did Abby Wambach have mentality & scoring instinct? How high do you think she could reached in men's leagues? The United States Adult Soccer Association? You need to know much more than those two traits.
I don't follow the woman's side. Tough enough as it is keeping up with most of the men's side, so I can't honestly answer your question.
Premier clubs are not going to make a big move for someone with no "England experience" and a patchy record. Schalke needs to be realistic if they want to sell.
I’m reading this as you saying, we have to factor in whether Hoppe has a penis or a vagina. So I must be wrong.
Hoppe is this generation's Wondolowski (had he decided to give Europe a shot). I'm betting on him to score today!

Yes, you're foolishly misreading it. Thedukeofsoccer's point was, quite obviously, that no amount of mentality and/or scoring instinct can make up for a sufficient lack of the physical side of the game. It's perhaps silly to pull an example from the WNT, but the point is clear.
I haven't followed this discussion closely, so maybe I'm misunderstanding... it sounds like you're saying there's no amount of mentality/ scoring instinct that can overcome the physical side of the game. Is that right? Unless the player is a total pushover, then I'd have to disagree. But then I'd think he wouldn't be a professional player.
Well, that depends. I think plenty of unathletic people get phased out throughout the levels of amateur athletics, whether that's college or earlier. Technically, that would support the idea that you need a high level of athleticism to get there. There are no more non-athletes in sports, except for a vanishing few specialized baseball players.

I like Grant Wahl's podcast, but one thing I find frustrating is how he isn't very good about asking follow-up questions and exploring interesting answers from his guests. This one was a case in point. How in the world did Hoppe go from U-23 bench player to regular Bundesliga starter almost overnight? The sequence of events was stated as a recounting of facts -- I was a U 23 bench player, I got called up to train with the first team, I started the next game, I scored a goal. It was like reading a bare bones Wikipedia entry or a police report of a traffic stop. Tell me more!
Lol, I assume you are on Twitter? Basically all hardcore Fans have rabidly turned on Wahl, Lalas Twellman etc establishment. Olympic failure, supporting the supper league etc... have crystalized hardcore Fans on twitter. I call them them the McDonald's of soccer. No nutrition and all fat.
