Behind the wall: How Ronaldinho's free kicks helped spark trend that's taking soccer by storm The practice of forming an extra barricade first became commonplace at the elite level in Brazil, where desperate defenders had to improvise a way to counteract set-piece specialists like Ronaldinho, who had a penchant for hitting free kicks below the wall to catch goalkeepers off guard. Ronaldinho enjoyed plenty of success with his decoyed daisy-cutters, including this impudent effort in the 2006-07 Champions League against Werder Bremen. https://www.espn.com/soccer/blog-th...lped-spark-trend-thats-taking-soccer-by-storm
Pretty embarassing how Barca have really mistreated Coutinho. First they mis-utilise him by buying him to play in the wrong system. Then send him out on loan, upon his return, they now refuse to play him due to a payment Liverpool are owed. What a s****y farce of a club Barcelona has become.
Jonathan Tannenwald @thegoalkeeper 19m CBS Paramount+'s coverage of Brazilian soccer starts the weekend of May 29. Notable games that weekend will include Flamengo vs. Palmeiras, São Paulo vs. Fluminense and Chapecoense's return to Brazil's top flight against Red Bull-owned RB Bragantino.
gerson should be in the list for the sr team. It is starting to bother me especially given gerson's style of game. what does fred do better than him? douglas luiz? I'm a paqueta fan too but the point still stands. Tite unironically is the most eurocentric manger/ admin in the selecao's history.
and what does marinho need to do? Reinaldo of sao paolo deserved a look too. Man, i watched cebolinha and richarlson a few times with their clubs recently and idk man, it didnt look good. The team is lacking goals badly and i imagine tite has no serious plans for gabigol. he was called just to shut us up imo.
douglas costa? Gabriel from arsenal is terrible. and could you guys calm down a little with the pedro hype? my goodness.and richarlison is a terrible finisher. You just made me feel better about tite.
This call-up was bound to be the least interesting one this year. With no matches since last year due to COVID, and few matches last year for the same reason, this was always going to be a safe call-up with the aim of getting 6 points against Ecuador and Paraguay. The biggest surprises are 2 guys Tite has called before (Gabigol and Fred) and one central defender he has been observing for a long time. If Brazil wins these 2 games it would be 18 points in 6 games with 12 games (or 36 points) to go. Practically qualified already. I am more interested in these call-ups instead: Copa America Olympics September/October/November call-ups Olympic friendlies (also called-up today) If Copa America is treated like 2019 - no Neymar and a chance to try a few new options - maybe that's when we finally give some new right-backs a chance. There are so many options besides Gabriel Menino who have seen time with the Olympic Squad under Jardine. The Olympic team is exciting in almost all positions, and with Weverton, Marquinhos and Neymar as overage choices should be clear favorites. But more importantly, I hope Tite's staff is looking at the Olympic team as serious options for right-back and several other spots. Today's Olympic call-up isn't the definitive one. In fact, it's weird cause the Olympic team didn't even officially have any friendlies scheduled for this call-up. (Maybe they still don't?) I'm glad Gerson made the Olympic team, I'm hopeful it means that the full team is also willing to get over the previous problem they had with him. I'd prefer to see him in Copa America than in the Olympics personally but I wonder if we'll see some players in both.
Great post. It's been so long the NT has played it's almost strange there's a call-up, but there will be a Copa América soon, right after the WCQ matches. I'm glad Gabigol will be part of this WCQ doubleheader, although with other talents around, I do wonder how long Daniel Alves can perform. The Olympic team is stacked - some Brazilians who have commented on other portals say the starting XI for the Olympic team could defeat Tite's starting XI. I agree with you re: the Olympic team being a very strong candidate, but PSG said it won't release Neymar for the Olympics. If that's the case, it does appear the Olympic team has other options, whether underage or senior NT. Does your preference for Gerson being in Copa América rather than the Olympics mean the Libertadores mata-mata will resume right after Copa América, which means an Olympics participation would harm Flamengo? That would make perfect sense. By the way - has anyone noticed that the 5th and 6th matches, which were to have taken place in late March and which were suspended due to Covid-19, have no replacement? Instead of playing at Colombia and hosting Argentina, we're hosting Ecuador and playing at Paraguay. I haven't seen anything anywhere about a rescheduling of the away at Colombia and at home vs. Argentina matches. And the 18th round is in late March 2022. The 2022 World Cup is in November of that year, but is CONMEBOL planning to have those two matches permanently canceled or are they going to schedule it for perhaps mid-late April 2022?
Right-back is the senior team's biggest weakness. Emerson, from Betis, and Dodo, from Shaktar Donetsk, are much better options than Dani Alves or Danilo, I think.
Not really. In fact, it seems there's a small chance Gerson will be sold. With Thiago Maia (who was an Olympic prospect too!) hopefully returning I think the potential money would be better invested in a forward since Flamengo could lose Gabigol to Copa America and Pedro to the Olympics (and maybe Copa America too). Earlier speculation was that those matches would be added to the September and October international breaks, making national teams play 3 matches during each break, instead of two (similar to what UEFA did in March). I think that's still an option, CONMEBOL just hasn't decided yet and won't until closer to or after Copa America.
My reaction to the call up ... Dani Alves Alex Sandro Danilo Fred Paqueta Pundits in Brazil having a cow that Lucas Verissimo is only getting a call up after going to Portugal.
Never thought I'd see the day that you criticize an Alves call. Paqueta is actually playing well for Lyon.

A CONMEBOL anunciu que a Copa América de 2021 foi retirada da Argentina, e a entidade analisa ofertas de países como Paraguai e Brasil. Mas se acabar nos EUA, pouca gente vai ficar surpreendida. CONMEBOL announced the 2021 Copa América has been withdrawn for argentina, and the entity is analyzing offers from countries such as Paraguay and Brazil. But if it ends up in the U.S., few will be surprised.
What a wild ride. They never should have planned to hold Copa América 2 years in a row (2019, 2020), but of course that would bring in more money than waiting until 2024 to start the new 4-year cycle. With the delays due to COVID a cancelation would be the best solution, but again, anything they can do to hold on to the money they were counting on, they will. Let's not forget, we have 2 qualifiers (Brazil already in training for those) coming up, Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil in progress, and Olympics (if those games happen...) at the end of July. If you could call-up a team that isn't affected by those, ok, but otherwise, the Copa América just seems like a monumentally bad idea for players and training staff right now (not to mention organizers and venues).
