MATCHDAY GUIDE | New England Revolution vs. Atlanta United FC | May 1, 2021 posted: April 26, 2021 6:39PM EDT Elizabeth Pehota Revs have never beaten ATL (0W-2T-5L). ATL coming off a 0-3 home CCL loss to PHI last night, despite dominating play in the first half (Andre Blake stood on his head to keep them off the board). Last night ATL had 4 new starters compared to Saturday's game vs CHI: CB: Alan Franco RB: Franco Ibarra CF: Josef Martinez RF: Jurgen Damm
Atlanta does seem to be the ultimate trick-or-treat team - so far, at least. Could be a pretty wide-open game.
I'm guessing even with the 3-0 deficit against Philly going into leg 2 (on Tuesday), Atlanta will still rest their first choice starting 11 against us. Expect a similar lineup as they ran out against Chicago although...perhaps even with 2 less regular starters? Barco and Sosa went the full game against Philly, and Sosa went 90 v Chicago; Barco went 88'.

Massachusetts sports arenas increasing capacity to 25% starting May 10. Revs first game after that will be May 16 vs Columbus. Full capacity target is August.
The Revs have only started two previous seasons with 2 wins and a draw in their first three games - 2009 and 2005. Take that for what its worth, as one of those seasons was amazing and the other was a dud. But right now, a lot to like and look forward to. Spending the weekend in first place in the east and leading the race for the Shield, at least for one night.
Well, that was much better. The Revs played last night to what my expectations were for the team at the start of the season. That's why I was so optimistic on my point total guesstimate. DeJuan Jones was light years better than the first game. Polster has improved over last year. They moved the ball quickly and made some great over-the-top passes. Carles Gil is outstanding. His technical ability is a joy to watch. As for the negative side, Brandon Bye has to work on his 1 v 1 defending. When he faces up to the player with the ball, he gets beat quite easily. In about the 87th minute, when the corner kick got cleared and Bye started up the field, then lost the ball. Then he was chasing the player into the box, from behind. I was thinking, oh no, not 2 PKs. We survived! My other complaint is during the first half about 4 times Tajon or Bye had the ball at their feet; 1 v 1 against the defender, out wide, at the top of the box. Turned and passed the ball back, and it went all the way back to the Turner. Why?? The Revs need to create more chances, taking on the defender from that position would help. And finally, a tip of the cap to the Ref. I thought overall he did a good job.
I was at work for this game, but what a pleasant suprise to come home to! Looks like a great hit from Bye. Any insight why Bou was unavailable? Nice to get the monkey off our back, getting a win against ATL finally. When I got the notification ATL tied it up, I remember telling my co-worker that we were going to end up blowing it. In my defense, many Revs teams of the recent past would have. I'm so impressed and happy to be wrong this time. Nashville has got to look like 3 points to this group. Lets fxcking go.
Well i liked the alignment and I liked Gil in the middle with Tajon starting. I think Bou may have a hard time starting again. This lineup WORKED well and Arena doesnt like to mess with what worked. The defense is so much better than years past. I now am looking at Kessler as the man in the middle. He's going places. Buksa works hard but needs to score. Traustason looked better but seems a little slow for this team. Solid but a little slow. Be interesting to see who Arena starts next week. BTW - i looked at ticket prices was disappointed to see single game tickets at $35 for crap seats via Ticketmaster. I guess the days of taking the kids to a cheap game are long over. Too bad. I wanted to take my grandson but I guess not at that price
Chris Penso, and his wife Tori, are quality referees . He addressed the atlanta physicality early in the match
Chris Penso is one of the few "good ones." Agree with the earlier poster who thought Kessler really came into his own in this game (I thought Farrell was uncharacteristicly shaky). Gil has done something new and more amazing every game this year. His service on the first goal was right footed and still perfect!
I agree with the major thrust of the post that Farrell was just OK while Kessler shined. BUT, as it pertains to Gil's assist, it was Farrell that put the ball right on Gil's foot with a nice, diagonal long ball and set Carles up to work his absolutely scrumptious magic.
Maciel starting and going the distance was another important step for the Revs. Whether he turns out to be a massive all-star or not aside, the fact the Revs took a player from their second team and promoted him to the first team - shows prospective players that the Revs are an organization that has their act together and has a pathway for players if those players are good enough. It is so hard to believe how bad stuff like this was for so long in Revs land - but great to see the Revs stepping up. Always get back and watch some of the recorded game again - I was surprised to see how much the black pellets flying everywhere - looks like a black cloud with every action. Don't notice it live, but on TV - looked like a CGI graphic added in.
Feldman said this is the first time a player signed from R2 had earned a start with the first team. I didn't really notice him, which means he didn't make any big mistakes. At one point in the second half, Feldman mentioned that Maciel was a perfect 27 for 27 completing passes on the night. I still found myself wanting Kaptoum out there, but Maciel is a good option to have.
I get the feeling that Arena's preference is to have Kaptoum and Maciel together in the middle. Poster's level of play may be throwing a wrench in that, but that is not a bad thing.
That was a good, solid win. I still think that the PK call we got was iffy, but I also thought theirs was relatively soft. I kept wondering in the first half when our missed opportunities would come back to bite us in the behind. I'm assuming all of us have followed the sport long enough that when you see a team dominating like that, but missing chance after chance (or not taking the shot when it's there), you completely expect the other team to get a fluky goal. And the PK gave Atlanta that chance. We are going to look really good attacking though if we continue to play like that. Saturday's a good test as Nashville (last year at least) is tough to break down. This is already their fourth home game of the year, but they only have three ties so far to show for it.
