I am reading that one Premier League club, part of the group of 6, has become very hesitant about the venture. That club may pull out of the project soon. Apparently, UEFA is working on that as well. If / when that happen, this whole scheme will crash.
If I’m UEFA and the Spanish, Italian and English FA’s....my response is this. the first club from a league to stipulate in writing to us that they have abandoned this idea will remain in their respective first division. The second club will go to the second division. The third to the third....and the balance will start at the bottom of pyramid.
Wouldn't shock me if it were Man City looking to get some sort of FFP relaxation with UEFA. Reports are that they and Chelsea only signed on as they weren't invovled in the main discussions and thought they would be left behind. Once a couple of teams drop out, you've then got 4 teams with serious financial muscle (with PSG and Bayern) competing for the players the ESL want, so it loses it's purpose of only featuring the best players.
UEFA should offer the first EPL, Italian, and Spanish clubs to withdraw complete immunity with no future penalities
Just read this article on attendance in rugby's super league: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-... NRL teams are, while GWS are averaging 11,535. Basically attendance is woeful. The lower level domestic leagues do better.
Chicagoan here. Fvkc the cubs. Fvkc 'em in the ear, turn 'em around, & fvkc 'em in the other ear. The 2016 cubs mean/meant less than nothing to a sizeable number of Chicagoans. And to attempt to draw a parallel between European footy fans/footy culture and a handful of stoopud cubs fans aint an apt one. ...but, we both are against the sooper dooper league idea. Carry on.
If the World Cup bans Super League players, no top players will want to play in it. It will become a clear second tier competition. The new open international tournament will be the one with the prestige that has value. Also, Mbappe of all people is certainly not turning down hundreds of millions of dollars on future revenue because he’s scared of a ridiculous bluff by FIFA when he already has a World Cup. There’s like a 0.0000% chance of that.
I don't think the galactico brains of Turin, Madrid and Wall Street have really thought this through.
This is a sub-zero take. I honestly don't think I have the lexicon to fully express how wrong I think you are.
Ironic thing is and this is the bargaining chip the clubs currently have, is that most of the top players in the world cup would be in these clubs anyway. Obviously access to the WC is the bargaining chip FIFA has. and I disagree with you. Its not that they don't want to play, it comes down to contracts and exactly what is forcing these players to ply their trade with their clubs. The World cup has a century of history and tradition that you can't erase overnight.
I see Agnelli's side could end up scrapping for a Europa League spot for next season, no wonder they want the fix in quickly. P.S. I see the PSG CEO has categorically ruled out any interest in the SL, not surprising given the Qatar WC next year. I'd imagine Mbappe will be quite relaxed about everything.
Jordan Henderson has reportedly called an emergency meeting of the captains to discuss what their response will be.
I think man utd Liverpool are the English instigators in this along with real Madrid Barcelona juve. The others don't really want to be a part of this but dare'nt lose out on a cash windfall. Man utd owners know they have little chance of winning any major silverware so need to make up their huge losses somewhere. Liverpool were probably banking on being in the title race at this stage plus being champions league contenders. City would be foolish to give up the prospect of finally winning a champions league. Chelsea have finally turned the corner. I dont believe that the other clubs will follow through with this. Just the main instigators man utd Liverpool real Madrid Barcelona juve.
Signs of imploding beginning? Guardiola directly speaks out against it this morning and now Man City's own social media team has joined the party against their own club. The boss speaks out! 💙🗣 @marathonbet🔷 #ManCity | https://t.co/axa0klUGiM— Manchester City (@ManCity) April 20, 2021 Interesting stuff.
Amazon Prime Video statement on the proposed Super League: pic.twitter.com/FCHc94yDns— Amazon Prime Video Sport (@primevideosport) April 20, 2021
As I mentioned earlier, City is the one looking at jumping ship. 1384477486340259841 is not a valid tweet id
This has got to be one of the biggest possible mistakes in world football, should this super league actually happen. Sad....
Wonder if Sky will follow on? They've invested multiple billions in the EPL but I bet Murdoch would love the idea of taking on Uefa and Fifa. Not sure if he still has an interest in Sky.
They'll redraw the proposal and provide a promotion/relegation avenue for other teams, and everyone will be satisfied. From everything I've read, that's the only real sticking point. Well except when hearing from UEFA of course.
Hopefully...money talks...which is why this super league is even a thing. Most of the "big clubs" in the super league are not financially sound, and even under water in some cases...this huge influx of cash is the driving metric.
Football is showing it doesn't need UEFA, or at least it doesn't need them for European club competitions. TV and the clubs themselves can handle it.
The Sky coverage has been overwhelmingly negative so far. They've basically used every segment possible to talk about how this can be stopped. I don't see them doing a U-turn now.
There is no limit to how much money these clubs could rake in while getting more and more into debt by outbidding each other for players. A few hundred million would be pissed in the wind, and offset by losses elsewhere. The things falling apart already, it will be dead and buried by the end of the week.
