“I have nothing against McKennie. He is a calm guy. He seems a good professional, he stays home, or he goes to train.

And the other shoe drops, as expected. Bummer. Really hope it's a learning experience for him - and that he draws the right lessons from it. He made a mistake, he's young, he'll be fine long-term - we won't love him any less. But please learn from this one.

Yeah. The pearl clutching in the thread is downright ridiculous.

Even one of the most judgmental books in history has a blurb about casting stones at hookers. Or maybe that was potheads talking about throwing bongs in greenhouses....

Anyway, shit happens. He is a kid and you are old and have not self reflected about your stupid choices as a 20 something.

When I reflect on my choices as a 20 something, I’m glad I wasn’t in the age of social media and smartphones.

No assumptions made from my aide, champ. This is Pirlo’s quote “The three players have not been called up for tomorrow. They will resume work in time, we'll see when.”

Meh...still NBD IMO...club might be pissed but probably mostly pissed they got caught. Wes needed some rest anyway.

The "we will see when they return" thing might have been to test the waters and see is that enough, but allow the club some wiggle room if folks are outraged at the light treatment.

Very smart of McKennie to do this with his Juventus teammates instead of with Pulisic, Sargent, and Dest in Belfast.

Yet they still allow players to breathe all over each other during goal celebrations, grope each other on set pieces and otherwise be face to face with new opposition each week.

this is simply a scapegoat tactic looking for the occasional sacrificial lamb to fill their “ look! we take Covid seriously folks” quota.

Yes, but Europe is having another wave of Covid, and there's a lockdown for Easter. They have to take breaking the lockdown rules seriously.

And yet they aren't stopping team sports? Strange, I thought it was serious...

Look, I am not arguing with you, I get your point. I am not advocating for shutting down team sports either, but it seems like "the rules" don't necessarily make sense and that is the elephant in the room.

It's a similar thing when the Denver Broncos QB got in a whole bunch of trouble and caught a bunch of flack for watching film maskless with 2 other teammates. And yet the NFL doesnt have any problem being the epitome of players literally face to face breathing on each other.

The whole thing is a bit silly.

    Apologies for the thread jack.

Pretty sure this was a rules violation and the rules were established to minimize a) risk within the organization and b) the perception among the people who buy the tickets and watch the broadcasts that professional athletes see themselves as too privileged to adhere to the same standards the rest of us follow to keep the grandparents alive.

Your boss pays you money to do a job. That occasionally involves them telling you what to do.

It's nice to know they are finally taking it seriously. Maybe they should look into getting their people vaccinated now that they are. I know it's the Big Soccer thing to do, especially in the YA forum, to worship all things European, but the EU has been an absolute disaster when it comes to their Covid response. As someone else said, these lockdowns and punitive measures against people like McKennie are meant to do little more at this point than distract the masses from the complete and utter failure of the EU to vaccinate its people in a timely manner.

You mean there are rules and people are supposed to go by them. Maybe that is why you are a moderator and my application keeps getting rejected. On the question about following the rules I write not applicable.

Italy has vaccinated 12% of its population (5.5% fully). That’s about the average for the EU and ranks it’s members among the highest in the world. EU countries are on track to reach herd immunity within the next 3-5 months.

I’m not saying there weren’t any mistakes made by the commission and member states. They should have invested more to build out and fortify cold chain storage in Eastern Europe for example.

But given the fact that the EU, so far, has allowed exports of vaccines and manufacturing components (with one exception) and is leading the COVAX initiative to help vaccinate the rest of the world during a global pandemic, I wouldn’t call it a “disaster”.

I believe the EU has pledged 1 billion to the Covax initiative, whereas the United States has pledged 4 billion.

So there is the EU and then there are the EU member states. Yes, the EU itself has pledged 1B but member states have pledged on top of that, for example Germany alone 1B.
What I was referring to though when I said that the EU is leading this effort was the export of vaccines to developing countries. To date, the US has blocked all exports.

I think people discount how much is on the line for these teams, and the responsibility it means for players. They’re paid millions because that’s what their clubs have on the line. Being in a tight race for the champions league, every game matters a lot, especially at this point in the year. The players knew they’d be suspended if they were caught, but they did it anyway. If they drop points while they’re out and miss on champions league, this would be something fans and management point to as why it didn’t happen.

he’s mostly a model pro and hard worker, but this was REALLY dumb.

I am here. They are taking it seriously, but their methods, especially in Germany, are just not working. So now you see folks throwing caution to the wind. In Germany, I’ve been in straight up lockdown since November with no end in sight. These measures across Europe are haphazard and not uniform. Plus the vaccine is nowhere to be found.

It’s stupid from Wes, but I bet it’s mostly because he got caught. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the local authorities come and say a few words to set an example too. Just one of those young and dumb things that you don’t fully understand until it happens to you. Wes will learn from it and move on.

Hell, people in the USA have been executed for selling cigarettes, paying at the store with a suspicious bill, or just standing at their window. We have no moral ground to get mad at the Italians for being uptight.
