Didn’t Canada just cancel all youth and National team camps in the USA as too dangerous for Covid?

I guess most know by now, but as it's not been posted in this forum, we have official confirmation from USSF that the US will host Brazil, Japan, and Canada back at Exploria Stadium in Orlando for the SheBelieves Cup. The tournament will be held Feb. 18-24, 2021. Like the Colombia games, there will be a limited amount of tickets available.

Feb. 18 Brazil vs. Japan (Exploria Stadium; Orlando, FL) 4 p.m.
Feb. 18 USA vs. Canada (Exploria Stadium; Orlando, FL) 7 p.m. FS1/TUDN
Feb. 21 USA vs. Brazil (Exploria Stadium; Orlando, FL) 3 p.m. FS1/TUDN
Feb. 21 Japan vs. Canada (Exploria Stadium; Orlando, FL) 6 p.m.
Feb. 24 Canada vs. Brazil (Exploria Stadium; Orlando, FL) 4 p.m.
Feb. 24 USA vs. Japan (Exploria Stadium; Orlando, FL) 7 p.m. FS1/TUDN

    I guess I should start a thread.

It's not USWNT-specific, but there's a short series of videos on the women in the USSF High Performance department (working with different USSF teams):

There's a series of articles based on interviews with Lynn Williams, Carli Lloyd, and Christen Press being published on the Equalizer about what it means to be a forward (only the Lynn Williams one is up right now). The interviews actually took place in the training camp before last year's SheBelieves right before everything shut down and were originally meant to be published in the run-up to the Olympics. The intro to the series is here: https://equalizersoccer.com/2021/02...series-exclusively-for-eqz-extra-subscribers/

If you want the articles with the actual interviews, go subscribe.

Do you guys think the Olympics are happening now with the vaccines being responsibly dialed out?

Most likely. The Japanese government never canceled the games anyways.

For those wondering, the source is Kate Markgraf from the Board of Directors meeting. Also I'm really curious about who will be at the Tournament of Nations, considering that historically it has been Japan (refused to travel to the US), Australia, and Brazil (came to SBC). Also originally I thought the Tournament of Nations was only for years without a major tournament? Guess not now...or maybe planning it with thoughts that Olympics might be cancelled?

Also as originally announced last year (pre-COVID), those away games in late November should be 2 games against Australia in Australia (assuming as prep for 2023). If that plan still stands, then we're hoping for travel to open up to Australia or for the team to get an exemption, I guess like athletes did for the Australian Open.

Finally, as the dates overlap NWSL, the above dates are all in FIFA windows, except for the late June/July friendlies. The regular season is supposed to wrap up at the end of October, so the late October friendlies could be a sticking point if a NWSL team is in a late push. Also it's important to note that the NWSL championship is scheduled for Nov 20 or 21, which is especially important if they're traveling to Australia, and especially if the team has to undergo a hard quarantine like tennis players did. Maybe all the players will be vaccinated by then?

    From Wikipedia:
"The Tournament of Nations is a global invitational tournament for national teams in women's association football hosted by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) in several American cities. The inaugural tournament was held in 2017. Although the USSF originally indicated that it will only hold the Tournament of Nations in non-World Cup and non-Olympic years,[2] the 2021 edition will be a pre-Olympics tournament. Starting in 2021 Volkswagen will become the title sponsor for the Tournament of Nations."

Apparently there is no such thing for the Japan Olympics.

Or, maybe, Japan actually cares about their people and also about the rest of the world. I believe that there should NOT be "vaccine passports" as there has not been enough time to be sure vaccines provide good protection in the long run. The development time seems much too short for such an important vaccine.

This is still a dangerous virus that spreads pretty easily.

ESPNFC released the Top 50 Best Women’s Players in the Game Right Now. They saw fit to only included 11 players from The Greatest Team in the Universe unlike that silly Guardian ranking of Top 100 players List from a couple months back that only included like 6 or whatever.

    https://www.espn.com/soccer/blog-es...ank-the-50-best-players-in-the-game-right-now

Since you asked, on the official jackdoggy List of Top 50 Best Players in the Game Right Now - - there is currently a 32-way tie for #1. Check that, a 33-way tie for #1 because ”The Great” Joy Fawcett still makes my List.

I want to give a plug to Haley Kopmeyer, a (former?) goalie, and her talk show on Ata football called "The Soccer Show." I enjoy her insouciant grin and effortless manner -- dryly funny but eschewing the forced humor of many announcers.
    https://watch.atafootball.com/shows

Speaking of personality, who would have ever thought Heather O'Reilly had one -- given her grim demeanor when she was a player. She appears on episode two of The Soccer Show. HAO is likeable and smart.

Hayley Raso was on the third and most recent Soccer Show. Listening to her reminded me of the science -- or psuedo science -- of glottochronology which postulates that languages evolve and change at a predictable rate and eventually become unrelated to the parent language. In another 100 years or so we Americans will need an interpreter to understand the English spoken by Raso.

Is it time to change the name of the language we mostly speak in the U.S. and call it "American" rather than English -- or perhaps looking to the future "Spanglish?"

Oops, my mistake. It was Rachel Daly on "The Soccer Show" not Hayley Raso. Although they don't look alike, I get them confused maybe because they play with the same intensity.

For those not on social media, just a fun story (and one I hadn't heard before) that Michelle Akers just shared on her Instagram:

"I’ll never forget one time at @USWNT practice in Orlando, FL, our coach Tony DiCicco was yelling at us to work harder, and then when we continued to disappoint, he stopped the session and called us all in. He was furious at our lack of intensity and how could we be the best in the world if we trained like that?! Apparently, when our response wasn’t satisfactory, to drive home the point, he decided to abandon the practice and announced we would instead go on a training run around the facility. So, he said take of your shin guards, etc, get ready to run... and then he took off at a fast pace across the fields toward the running trails. Surprised, we all scrambled to catch up and fell into a line behind him. About a lap into it, as we started to get settled, the pace began to slow.... struggling, huffing and puffing, it had been a valiant effort, but Tony realized who he was running with. If only he could run a little faster. The whole thing lasted for about 2 minutes longer than I thought. Poor Tony, we never let him forget that run. #runlikeagirl #uswnt #tonydicicco #miahamm #runalittlefaster "

    https://www.insider.com/mili-hernandez-girl-banned-looking-like-boy-elite-sooccer-player-2021-4

Mili Hernandez — the girl once barred from a soccer tournament for looking like a boy — is now a top player in her state with national team aspirations

Hernandez's aptitude for The Beautiful Game was apparent from an early age. Just three years after she first started playing soccer, she joined forces with a team of 11-year-olds because her talent level was so far beyond that of players her age.

And even then, Hernandez was clearly a star for the Azzuri Cachorros Chicas. In June of 2017, she cruised as she led the squad on a dominant run through a local competition near her hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. But once the Chicas reached the tournament's championship game, everything changed.

Moments before Hernandez and her teammates were set to take the field for the finals, their head coach received some startling news; the team had been disqualified from the Springfield Soccer Club tournament because someone had complained that Hernandez — who wore her hair short — was a boy. And while the event's organizers insisted that a typo left the Azzuri Cachorros star listed as male on the team's roster, the Hernandez family was convinced that the 8-year-old's physical appearance played a significant role.

That confidence has propelled Hernandez to the upper echelons of the sport — and onto the national team track
Hernandez is involved in Nebraska's Olympic Development Program (ODP), a highly selective soccer environment run through US Youth Soccer that works to "identify and provide opportunities for high potential players" with an eye towards national team exposure and preparation.

Simply put, ODP is a huge deal.

Of the 23 players featured on the US Women's National Team's 2019 World Cup-winning roster, 21 of them had played for an ODP squad in their youth. And considering Hernandez says her "dream is to be professional soccer player" and that she hopes to suit up for the USWNT someday, two consecutive years of ODP training and competition are a promising start.

"I didn't know that the women in the World Cup once played on ODP teams," Hernandez said. "That's exciting knowing that I am following in their footsteps."
