Meh, ain't from Charlotte so I wouldn't know. I don't think this is a convincing "gotcha" take on why a minor league soccer team as to have near-MLS levels of season ticket pricing as you make it to be. You're too generous.
So they are gonna play in the old Fire stadium? If Fire left because it was hard attracting fans there, what chance do they have?
We charge half that for the Indy Eleven! The problem wasn't the stadium itself (it was a very nice one), but rather it was out in the boondocks. Now imagine you're a low level club hyping on the value of independence and other buzzwords.
Lol, I forget which NISA club it was but one was initially hyping their “European-style” soccer. I still wonder exactly want that was supposed to refer to.
My favorite nowadays is "authentic, grassroots, organic soccer" I can set up a small shack selling hamburgers (the authentic, non-GMO, organic kind!) but it's not going to sell well or get the people flocking to it compared to the Five Guys next to me.
Yeah, the “authentic” one is really annoying. I mean, I can somewhat relate to the grassroots appeal, I myself am sometimes nostalgic for the days when MLS felt like it was more underground than today. But I really dislike the sentiment you often see among a certain crowd that a lower division team is "real" while MLS is always a scrimmage even if it's a title game. It's really disrespectful to the players (as well as the fans that just want to support local soccer).
Many of those "authentic" cubs are cheapskate owners who literally put little to no money in there clubs while crying how unfair the soccer structure is set up. Even MLS cheapskates owners are putting millions into things like academies
That's true. Meanwhile there are "authentic" clubs in Europe who's owners are losing 7 figure sums because that's the cost of running a football club. Similarly, League One is largely loss-making with only 9 of the clubs posting profits – and 6 of these are less than half a million. In fact, the 2 largest reported profits would also have been losses without exceptional gains: Wimbledon – stadium sale; Southend – loan write-off. pic.twitter.com/epknzjxl1G— Swiss Ramble (@SwissRamble) March 24, 2020
So setting aside that “one” is the opposite of “many”, it’s also hard to argue he’s a cheapskate if he’s spending $1 million/month on his lawsuit which (regardless of the merits or lack thereof) is based on the system undermining the incentive to invest in these things at the lower division level. But I suspect this is who the OP was referring to as well. I also have kind of a hard time calling the Cosmos “grassroots” given that it was the product of buying a brand, but...
Ah yes, because 1 million in legal fees is 1 million that could be spent on the "system" In other words, chump change.
Pro Soccer Returns to Stumptown for NISA Spring SeasonStumptown AC Introduces Seasoned Executive Team, Coach; Unveils Branding @StumptownAC https://t.co/KlGAWC8MeJ— NISA Official (@NISALeague) March 3, 2021 Stumptown rebranded and it's more uninspiring than ever. Like why? I've never heard of anyone in that area use "Stumptown" as a nickname.
$1 million/month. Somewhere around $40 million. Way beyond chump change for lower leagues. https://firstteampod.com/ftp-exclus...gures-each-month-on-the-nasl-vs-ussf-lawsuit/
More credible sources needed, and not from a fan blog site. They definitely don't call themselves that. Also Matthews is a suburb of Charlotte. Like saying Hendersonville is a suburb of Nashville.
Then you find something refuting it. The point is that of all of the valid insults to throw at Commisso, “cheapskate” isn’t really it. He’s clearly willing to spend on Fiorentina. So I should have written that stumptown is apparently the nickname for Matthews (I have never been there and have no plans to go to confirm or deny this). I just meant that they’re leaning into Matthews for their identity, not Charlotte. I don’t know or care if it works for them, but I can certainly appreciate the strategy. Definitely branding as Charlotte and playing in Matthews wasn’t working out so hot for the Independence. If Nashville SC played in Hendersonville they could maybe get away with calling themselves Nashville, if a lower division club popped up there, Franklin, or Rutherford County, maybe they should try something other than Nashville.
