If I had to pick a few I'd say Brazil, Germany, France, England, Spain, Portugal, and Mexico but really I'd like to see them beat anyone and everyone, I'm never a happy person if they lose.

    1. Mexico: The USMNT could beat Mexico 10 out of the next 10 times they played and it wouldn't get old.

    2. Brazil: Brazil doesn't lose that often, and the US doesn't get to play them that often, so a victory over Brazil would be super-sweet. And to do it in the World Cup... well, Brazil's lost, what, twice in the last three World Cups? And they made it to the final in all three of them?

    3. Spain: The earlier post convinced me, except I think PYordan would be skipping to work for months, not days :)

Actually, any win over an elite nation would be great. Italy, Holland, Portugal... I'm guessing those wins wouldn't suck.

Like it or not the English could care less about playing the Nats. I doubt its even crossed the mind of any England supporter that doesn't post on BigSoccer in any shape or form. I'd still love to beat them but we care a lot more than they do. Mexico, Germany and Brazil are the other big three for me, all for obvious reasons.

Not sure why I'm bothering to respond to this but you appear to be under the impression that English people are claiming some sort of reflected glory for our national team based on the fact that the Premiership has some good foreign players.

Which is, of course, utter nonsense. But it goes along with the general making-up-imaginary-grievances theme which seems so popular in this thread.

I take it you are talking about ex-pats when you say fans?

Almost without exception, English fans over here devote as much time to thinking about the US team as they devote to thinking about the Nicaraguan lawn-mower repair industry. Sorry to disappoint you.

I'm not sure if you're right about that RichardL.

The Nicaraguan lawn-mower repair industry has been a hot topic down at my local recently.

US beating Mexico is always a treat.

Beating England wouldn't be a sinful delight; it'd be more like "Hey old-timer, I've grown a lot."

We're acatully just talking about a select number of English posters on BS who like to come onto the US boards and talk about how overated our team is and how crap our players are and how we overhype everything. Which pisses some of the US fans off as the pot calling the kettle black. Not that I don't like England in a major tournament they're the only other team I'd root for. But to beat them would be serious smugness.

I was lucky enough to be at the WC game in Korea when we beat Mexico, and it was wonderful. Among the Mexico supporters to my left during that game was a very drunken Brit yelling "USA are crap!" and worse. Yes, I'd like to squash the limeys in official World Cup play. Of course we beat them once already in 1950, but I wasn't born yet, so it made it harder to enjoy.

Germany in Germany is a prize for anyone. Especially for us after France '98.

I was also there when US beat Brazil at the LA Coliseum and it was like a religious experience. I still haven't come down off the high.

I would rather beat England because they are merely a good team based in Europe, and we need to take on and beat European teams (preferrably on their home soil) in order to prepare for Germany 2006.

That's the best reason of all to beat them. I could care less if we have England's respect or not, or that of any other nation. Our preparations for the next World Cup finals, during and after the qualification rounds, that's all that really matters.

My list according to that spirit (in no particular order):

    • England
    • Germany
    • Spain
    • France
    • Italy

    And now, the practical list:

    • Mexico (twice)
    • Trinidad & Tobago (twice)
    • Panama (twice)
    • Costa Rica (twice)
    • Guatemala (twice)

And might I add, Australia, due to the fact that I live here, and I can stick it to all the Eurosnobs that I know in and around Melbourne. ;)

Er, no you did not. I refer you to Law 10: "The team scoring the greater number of goals during a match is the winner."
