I know Sargent received criticism for that... but the ball was played behind him, there were no other teammates close by, and he had an eye on goal. It wasn’t the cleanest strike... (same for his missed volley)... but it’s a little much to expect him to pull that one out of his ass or harp on him too much for having a go.
Yes, it was sarcasm from Kohfeldt. It’s not the same team as last season at all. We got rid of some past heroes and lost starters with Vogt and Klaassen. We replaced them with U20 guys from our own system and lower leagues. Bremen has the third youngest team in the Bundesliga and the 10th youngest team of all teams in the big 5 leagues—and some teams above us can afford to pay €23m for a 17 year old. The current team has great potential and sticking with Kohfeldt was the right decision but I agree that we really need a healthy Füllkrug and a new defensive midfielder. The latter won’t be possible until we‘re out of the €80m Covid hole. That’s why we desperately need to stay in the league. That’s the only goal this season and so far what Kohfeldt is doing is working.
Yeah, this was even worse if a chance than I thought in real time. Before getting the pass, it seems he glanced over his shoulder and saw the defender close behind. Another touch there and the defender blocks, takes the ball, or Sargent is forced to pass back. With so few chances, it seems many take those and imagine them to be higher quality chances. This wasn't even a half chance w that pass. The volley was a better chance.
An experienced striker would take the ball few steps into the box to position himself better for the shot, there was space. Instead he chose to shoot on first touch with the ball slightly behind, and would never able to get full power on that shot. Half chance at best. He's still young, plenty of time to learn and get better. He might be on a pretty bad team, but at least he got to play. If he was on a good team, he might not get off the bench often.
Florian Kohfeldt on Josh Sargent: "If he stays like this, he is very, very calm in the locker room and he is focused, and on the pitch he's full of energy. He will one day be one of the league's top strikers, I'm completely sure." #USMNT— Larry Henry Jr (@lhenry019) January 30, 2021
Not sure what the disagreement is? I agree with that. He has a step and a pass in front of him creates good scoring chance. The pass behind allows defense to catch up if Sargent has taken another touch as some thought he should have. Better pass the defender doesn't catch him.
I analyzed above but this is wrong. The pass behind him precluded the opportunity to take another touch. The defender (actually 2) was right there, and when Sargent hits it they are a yard or two behind the ball already. If people want to talk about wasted chances, the 2nd half volley was a decent chance he should have done better with. This was nothing.
Let’s be honest. My observations are more insightful than other people’s because I am more honest because I am more negative and everyone knows that is the same thing as honesty so just wait patiently for my posts and then you will know what is actually true about YA.
I guess we are in disagreement about your two points (btw That's a good thing in civil discourse 1) IMHO he must take a touch (not a Zardes touch) and still has room for a shot, Obv ymmv. 2) The volley shot never happened because there are zero vids of it . The volley was unforgivable. Period. I am actually a giant fan of Sargent as I have suffered through almost all of his games, but the volley was... Wondo-esk and, to be frank made, me question the fundamentals of Sargent.
Everyone blows shots. Not everyone makes the screamer Josh made last match. He didn't have a great game, but few people on either team actually did. Maybe Schalke's keeper had a great match, but who else?
Hey, I will be the first to defend Sargent, but his volley miss as a striker was the defenition of Zardes. You can't put an open volley 5 meters above the goal in the Bundesliga. It is not the first time that something like this happened with Sargent. I explained it away because I was seeking confirmation bias because he was with Bremen Just to stop the argument that messi misses that as well, there is a goal to shot ratio.
Hmmm. I’m going to have to watch that volley shot again. I remember it this way: the ball was coming towards him and high, as the ball was dropping it was getting closer to Sarge. He took the shot when the ball was too high (hence field goal) but his leg was already crammed on his body because the ball was too close to him. It looked like a difficult shot to me. Maybe I mis-saw it?
Poor strikers will make the occasional screamer, too. Great strikers will miss the volley that Josh missed. It's the composite of the work that reveals which he is/will become.
The volley was a whole lot tougher than it looked. It's just on a team like Werder Bremen, that may be the only kinda chance he gets all game. So he makes it and we all think he's turning the corner, he misses it and he's a bum. Answer is Bremen sucks and someone please stop me from having to watch them play.
