I think relegation battling Schalke will be focused and bring it. It could actually end up being a good game! But, I am aware I’m setting myself up for disappointment here...
Not understanding German, was that last sentence sarcastic? Like "finally he scored, now the media can shut up and consider him a good striker", implying all the criticism of him has been unfounded? Only somewhat related, but kohfeldt has really done well this year. Has the same team as last year more or less, probably worse talent this season, and has them in 12th place, well clear of relegation with schalke up next. He gets slammed here often, and the team is a chore to watch, but he needs to get some credit. The D is very good, they grab a bunch of draws and a win here and there. That's enough. From my famed eye test, the team has zero talent. So I don't think last season was the squad underachieving as much as this season they are exceeding expectations.
Almost certainly yes. He's been on record praising Josh for his all-round contribution at various points in the season, and his body language when Josh threw a bit of a stop when he was subbed off was very positive: "Josh, you've done well. I'm happy with your performance but you were looking a bit tired so I subbed you" was the message. He's actually done pretty well in three of the four seasons he's been head coach. He took over at the end of October in 2017-18, with the team rooted to second-bottom of the BL, and steered them to 11th place and 8th place in 20-18-19 the next season when they never looked in any danger of dropping into a relegation struggle. Last season was dreadful, but they're looking good now in terms of survival, even if the football is still grueling fare. They're 6 points clear of the playoff place with a +13 GD and only 1 point off 10th with Schalke and Bielefeld next. Get 4 points from those two games and they're on 25 points with 13 games to go. 35 points has been enough for automatic survival in 8 or 9 of the last 11 seasons and the playoff slot, which the BL1 side nearly always wins, in 9 of those 11. If you'd offered that to the fans at the start of any season since Thomas Schaf left, they'd have said "danke schon" and opened a bottle of champagne.
Transfermarkt shows Josh has 8 league goals in 55 matches, half of those goals came last season. Let's hope he can score more than two goals in the remaining three months.
Somewhere I saw that most of goals are when he comes on a sub. And 3 or 4 are against Hertha. And of course, Hertha tends to fire their manager after playing Bremen (it was mentioned in the broadcast last weekend, and we saw how that turned out...)
It's looking a lot more white than green in training today ❄️#werder pic.twitter.com/hPA2NBRAiR— SV Werder Bremen EN (@werderbremen_en) January 29, 2021
If you were to play a drinking game involving every shockingly bad first touch by Schalke, you’d be dead from alcohol poisoning before halftime.
And yet Bremen is even worse it seems to me. The left back is particularly bad at everything. Even dribbled a ball out of bounds for no reason and I'm not sure he's completed a pass yet. No wonder teams are going after MLS outside backs.
To blame either of these two Americans for not scoring enough is absurd when you watch these teams play.
Certainly not his best today. I didn't have a good feed, but he didn't seem much involved. Calling his technique poor after last week is a bit odd, though. Off in the 60th, and I'm out with him.
bremen is just dire. you cant argue against taking sarge off...until you see osaka come on. its just a neverending whos-not-gonna-score roulette.
Neither team knows how to play to their center forwards nor know how to counter attack. Both play that slow build up from the back and that’s just not their game.
The team that can't score against the team that can't score or defend. I'm surprised anyone got on the scoresheet at all.
Bremen with a strong second half after a horribly passive first. In the end, we should have gotten the win with 15 to 6 shots on goal. All young players, incl. Sargent, really struggled today. Agu (seemed injured after a crash) and Mbom should have been taken off even earlier and Sargent at the half in my opinion. Bremen was really dominant with Möhwald and Rashica and I think having those two back from injury will really help the forwards. Next game is the cup game against Fürth where I think Sargent will start on the bench if Selke is fit on time.
Maybe, maybe so. How much better would Haland or Lewandowski make this team? Sure we know they would be an improvement but they sure as hell wouldn’t be scoring 9 games in a row either.
Watch Leipzig vs Leverkusen. Watch how both teams can play their attackers into space. Even though the game 0-0 still, you can see that the teams are so much more dynamic than Bremen and Schalke. Throughout the whole game, I don’t think neither Bremen or Schalke played one ball into space for their attackers. You can’t expect much to play from center forwards in that kind of system.
