thanks for the explanation. Me thinking the trade & draft pick was somehow connected for the Spirit to get Macario,,,,but with their many winning seasons, there's no way Seattle was going to have the very first choice draft choice!
By all means they should, yeah. The whole league has known they were coming in for well over a year now. The only reason previous expansions teams have "missed" getting the #1 pick was that they came into the league with less than an offseason to go, meaning everyone else had planned for the draft without expansion considerations.
I don’t get how Louisville is the only expansion? It’s a real pretty town, but it’s only a half a mill strong with no suburbs & or major cities close by. In the meantime the 14 million plus LA area still got to wait another year, what gives?
Not necessarily(?) on-the-pitch related news, but midfielder (currently on loan) R. Quinn has come out as trans on their Instagram. Just a fun tidbit I wanted to share. =-)
Things are going to get interesting with player moves starting tomorrow. So who do folks feel like we must protect in the expansion draft next month. I think Balcer and Murphy are the top two we must protect.
Is allocation money going to be involved in this also? This will be confusing as well if it did. Get two players from a team, and offer money for another 3rd player from the same team.
And finally, what about the players overseas? Like Christen Press, Sam Mewis, Rose Lavelle and so on?
Surely it won't be involved in the draft -- but you're right that there will be a high likelyhood of trades soon after.

Yes, very surprised they preferred to keep Betos rather than Murphy. And yes someone could come from Lyon considering some of their French players might retire from the NT while coach Diacre is at the helm. So that would be the perfect time to come to the USA ( pending Covid-19 of course).
I'm a huge Betos fan, but i don't think she's an option. She tore her MCL earlier this month and will not be available for the start of the season. She'll be 33 which isn't OLD for a keeper but i don't see her as a full time starter. We've got untried undrafted invitee Carly Nelson but without Murphy we have to be in the market for a starting keeper.
I'd hate to see Hammond, Huerta or Celia get taken. Most of the rest, although i like and value most of them, my head says it's ok to lose one or two. I don't know if we have to protect Celia, as an international. My heart would want to protect Cox, but my head tells me you don't need to. She won't play anywhere else, for family reasons, so not a good pick for an expansion team - she'd probably just go back to retirement. We don't need to protect Fishlock either, if she gets drafted she will stay in Europe. Pinoe hasn't played in forever for the Reign... While she has great marketing value still, I'm not sure you protect her either on the off chance she'll be healthy and ready to play in what could be another Covid season. After Lu, Fish & Pinoe, the player with the longest tenure is, surprisingly, McNabb. I hope they take Long -- then we don't lose a second player and as good as she is individually, we play better as a team when she's not on the field. So maybe protect: Barnes, Balcer, Huerta, Hammond, Weatherholt, Spencer and if we need to protect internationals: White & Celia
Oh yeah! We've got to protect Lavelle too, in case she comes back to the league, Lavelle & Pinoe make 10, we get one more protection. I'm going to use it on the rook Leah Pruitt -- we only got a glimpse, but i liked what i saw.
If I was playing GM, I’d protect Long and Lavelle as my 2 NT protections, assuming they won’t choose Pinoe since she’ll never play for them. Along with Pinoe, I don’t think you need to protect Cox, Betos, Cruz, Momiki, Celia and Fishlock due to age and/or international. The 9 non-USWNT I would protect are Barnes, Balcer, Huerta, Jenkins, Pruitt, Quinn, McNabb, Hedge, Hammond. Unprotected list (if not waived this week) Spencer, Brooks, Smith, Weatherholt, Andrews, Hiatt, White, Ashley, Nild, George, Hazlett, Nelson. This assumes the coaching staff liked what they saw from their first-rounder Hedge before she got injured. If they didn’t, I’d swap White for her.

I think "unsurprisingly" would be a better word than "interestingly". It means that the previous rumors were genuine interest that hasn't faded, and that COVID really was what killed the deals and not (as some suggest) salary issues.
