There seems to be some teeth to this NBCSN shutdown rumor. Here's a BlueJackets (Columbus NHL) fan site mentioning it. https://www.1stohiobattery.com/colu...tional-tv-appearance-on-nbcs-2020-21-schedule "It will be a Sunday Night Hockey game on April 25 in Tampa Bay, and who knows? By that time, NBC may have officially shuttered NBC Sports Network and the game will air on the Peacock streaming service."
I haven’t read anything about NBCSN being shuttered, and I have a hard time imagining it would be happening really soon. But that said I’ve been a bit troubled by the offloading of EPL content to streaming-only, its replacement by long blocks of Mecum Auto shows, and the partial disappearances of Ms. Lowe on more matchdays. And what that portends for the future.
NBCSN shutting down doesn't make any sense at all. I'm not saying it will or won't, but I wonder why it would. That would mean the disappearance of programming off USA Network or maybe revamping CBNC. I can't imagine umpteen repeats of Shark Tank does CNBC any good, but just like Mecum Auto Auctions on NBCSN, they can make money by showing commercials if each show gets approximately the same number of viewers. But you're absolutely right though. Peacock was originally supposed be the home for overflow games, right? It seems like someone said: "Well, if Peacock is a thing, why don't we put it ALL on Peacock instead of just a bit?"
I think the foundation of the prediction is the premise that a "rerun" network like USA is no longer going to be viable. In order for USA to stay viable, according to the prediction, they are going to need to evolve into NBC's version of TNT that includes reruns, original programming, and live sports. I don't necessarily agree with that as I think USA's current original programming and commitment with the WWE gives it enough variety to keep it viable and not just a "rerun" Channel. I don't think they necessarily need the live sports nor do I see how they could support it with their Monday and Wednesday night WWE commitments
There ya go. Put the rerun stuff on Peacock. Turn USA into a general variety channel similar to TNT and (somewhat) TBS. Then...sunset NBCSN and not because of low ratings or cost or anything, but mainly because NBCSN becomes redundant at that point. It's not so much "NBC is killing off NBCSN" because of money or dislike of EPL or whatever, it's "NBC is shuffling their entire deck of cards and as a result, NBCSN is becoming unnecessary." That...makes sense.
Then what becomes of NBCSN? One less cable channel to sell to cable and satellite providers? I'm not sure sure im buying this rumor. If any network were to be sunsetted right now, it sure wont be a sports focused network.
The channel space for NBCSN would go away. The channel space for USA would stay. The content on USA would shift. They'd show Tour de France, some NHL, some EPL and Notre Dame (depending what happens there with their football in ACC.) They'd also show plenty of Olympics. When not showing live sports, they'd show what USA currently shows. Is there really a need to show umpteen hours of Law & Order, Modern Family, Chicago PD and whatever else when Peacock is free?
No. But there is a need to draw a subscription fee from every cable/Sat household for content you own and air anyway. Shuttering a cable channel, while improving the quality of remaining channels for viewers, will only result in a net loss of subscription fees and advertising dollars. There is a reason we have so many cable channels that mostly have little unique programming to justify themselves. You need a few shows that are in demand, then you can re-air law and order and old car auctions and ten year old poker shows over and over all you want.
So apparently there's 3 EPL games tomorrow, but the games at 1pm aren't on Peacock or NBCSN. Am I missing something?
https://www.lightreading.com/cablevideo/charter-nbcu-deal-adds-lift-to-peacock-/d/d-id/766524 Spectrum internet customers will soon have Peacock premium included like Comcast and Cox Customers
"The deal paves the way for Charter's 30 million broadband and pay-TV customers to get Peacock Premium, a version of the service that sells for $4.99 per month as a standalone, for no added cost... for a while." So would a customer need both? I suppose that bolded part (my emphasis) is open to some interpretation. It also says it's a limited free trial, although it could be extended.
I would assume it would be based on your ISP as that is how it is with Cox and Comcast and you wouldnt need both to qualify. Similar to an ESPN3 setup. I wouldnt suspect there would be many who have Spectrum as their TV provider and a different ISP carrier as the bundling discount alone would make such a choice non sensical
I really wish NBC would make more/quicker progress on their streaming player features. Right now what I really really want is the ability to watch the huge LFC-MUFC match from the beginning, which I wasn't able to do live 2.25 hours ago when it started. My ESPN app can do this but not my Peacock app, which doesn't allow me to either rewind or jump to the start of the broadcast. (ESPN allows both) WTF! Hello guys?? This is a 20th century feature for DVR's.
Also, is there something preventing them from having the pre-game shows on both NBCSN and Peacock? I'm paying for Peacock and they're showing the big game. Only makes sense that the coverage on Peacock begins more than a few seconds before kick off. Going from the pregame show on NBCSN to a niche streaming service like Peacock isn't necessarily just a click away. They've been doing the same thing for matches shown on the main NBC channel for years now but in that case it is somewhat understandable since they need to wait for Joel Osteen to stop expelling hot air. But why just show dead air on Peacock live in the minutes leading-up to a match?
I haven't watched Peacock a massive amount, so my sample size is a little small, but I think I've seen it both ways. Sometimes, you click on the match and it includes pre-game coverage, and sometimes it just starts minutes before KO. Just another example of inconsistent and not particularly customer-friendly production. But frankly the ability to rewind within a stream or to play a match from the beginning even if it's already in progress are much higher priorities for me.
Joel Osteen (most likely) pays for that time. So yeah...there isn't much that can be done. Besides, it's not that hard to flip from NBCSN to NBC, unless you're going to an antenna and even then, it's not like navigating menus. At least he's taped, so you know he'll end on time. It's far from desirable, but Peacock has casting abilities. During the pregame show on NBCSN, set up Peacock on a mobile device and then have it already to cast. Honestly, if I'm Comcast, I'm probably not going to simulcast a pregame show, as that gives people more of a reason to cancel/downgrade their TV subscriptions.
There's a problem with NHL on NBCSN: the home markets are often blacked out, especially for teams that appear on NBC Sports regional networks.
If the game is on NBCSN and a regional channel, it'll be blacked out on NBCSN in that team's territory as the regional channel has the rights in that area.
End of an era. I hope the EPL games get moved to USA rather than having them all moved to Peacock. Here's the link from the AP on NBCSN being no more: https://apnews.com/article/nhl-indycar-nascar-a175845b42d132547ff93360838d3895 As a hockey fan, this is extremely disappointing. Their presentation of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as well as just regular season games, is outstanding (Pierre McGuire withstanding). Their EPL work is also top notch. If it moves to ESPN, my only hope is that I get more quality games on ESPN+. Not sure where else hockey would go. For EPL, I would imagine you'll get one game on NBC main, one on USA, and 8 on Peacock per round, which is very disappointing.
UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH Yet another step backwards in the new world of streaming NBCSN RIP OK, OK they're not quite dead yet, but they might as well be
Well.. that is that really. I've already tapped out to cable but I'm dreading the idea of less games on TV (meaning less games on Telemundo and NBC). The only way for them soften the blow is to have every game available live and on-demand on Peacock
