Because I infer that the rest of the players think of him as captain material, as do the coaches. Since when is the “best player” entitled to be the captain?

Adams is more of the kind of guy to put pressure on everyone to step up focus and effort, McKennie is more politically savvy and charming. People will follow McKennie by what he does.

Smart, vocal in an authoritative way, connects with people well. This can’t be news to USMNT fans ... No criticism of Wes at all. Just an observation that captain doesn’t equal MVP.

Rummaging around CBSsports to read up on Hoppe's latest work and found this interview with Arthur where he mentions McKennie. Didn't see it posted before on the thread:
"But aside from these names, he has been most impressed by Weston McKennie, the 22-year-old American midfielder on loan from Schalke. "He has surprised me a lot," says Arthur, who made his debut for Brazil's senior team against the United States. "He is an extremely intense player, he's always running all over the pitch and helps defensively too. But he also scores a lot of goals, important ones for a midfielder. He's a very, very good midfielder and one of the best." Full article here: https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/ne...-and-why-he-was-surprised-by-weston-mckennie/

Leipzig is currently a better side. By a decent margin.

The clip I saw seemed to show him as the first, after the Captain, to lift the trophy, but they probably edited it, since Christiano has to be 2nd to lift the trophy after the Captain. (smirk)

While that's great and all, f him for being surprised about how good an American is. It surprises me that players don't assume that a player being brought in by a team like Juve might actually be pretty good, whether he's American or not. Douchebag.

Very sensitive. Half or more of the people in this site have been surprised.

Nah, just tired of it being news worthy that some douche from Brasil is surprised that an American is as good as he is. Tiresome.

Why is he a douche? I mean he was sold for almost 4x of what Weston was. He probably was surprised like most of his team mates that Weston is performing like a key player, not a minor rotation option as expected at that price for Juve.

Yeah I offered the quote without comment because I wanted to see how people took to it. I'm ambivalent - a bit of "cool, nice McKennie is getting respect in the team and they see him as an equal" and a bit of "the first thing you mention is how he runs around? Surprised he's good?" But overall later in the comments he talks about how his game is well-rounded and is one fo the best on the field. So I'd go more positive than negative on this one...

Isn't work rate pretty respected in both Italian and Brazilian soccer culture? Not exactly even a backhanded compliment to say he runs a lot.

Not everyone got the memo that this generation of American players are unlike the ones that came before.

People have biases. That's just the way (yow) of the world.

"He's got a great work rate and never gives up."
    "He's very athletic."
    "He's very well spoken."

Yep. Knowing the calcio atmosphere in Italy, where anything Americano is instant subject of ridicule (only in Portugal/Spain they mock American soccer more), I know that to be where he is Wes didn't have it easy at all, it's huge. I still have trouble believing it at times.

I like the idea of McKennie as captain, except that big Wes has a very good shithousing game and it would be harder to pull that off as captain.

I kind of like the idea of Wes as the emotional leader on the field that the guys follow, but Adams as the boy scout captain who can work the ref properly.

Perhaps the best "shithousing" game around. Yet captained Sweden.:D
