Hoddle wasn't underused by Robson - he played pretty much whenever fit until his knees went. Maybe by Greenwood, but he had his established veterans. People forget how often he was injured. I also don't really see Gazza as being that neglected. Robson had him as a regular once he broke into the squad in 89, but he missed massive chunks of seasons after that. From 91 to 95, he had a little over one year of regular playing time (late 92 through to end of 93). He picked up 8 caps in that time. Once he went to Rangers, Vanables played him whenever fit. He didn't manage to play 30 league games in a season after 1990, and certainly wasn't the same player after his knee injury.
First time I’ve heard anyone claim Gazza was neglected. Maybe the point is related to Graham Taylor’s reign and the style of play. Even then Gazza was treated much better than other creative options.
Hoddle didn't do Gazza any favours as England manager, and maybe that's what people remember. He did have him in and out of the team, but he was clearly declining massively by then - it was only his reputation keeping him in the squad from 1997 onwards. How he handled leaving him out of the 98 squad was extremely poor though. Gazza won 57 caps over 10 years, during which time he only played around 200 league games. For comparison, Frank Lampard hardly ever missed a match at his peak and had a run of 86 caps in 10 years, at a period when we played more games. That's not a huge difference given Gazza's injury record. If anyone should feel aggrieved at being overlooked by England around that time, it would be people like Beardsley or Le Tissier.
Not sure why. Dcl offers ariel threat. Hes scoring goals, though that's gone down a bit. Abraham would be on my standby list
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominic_Calvert-Lewin According to Wikipedia dcl is 2 years old. What will he be like when he's 18
Abraham isn’t an aerial threat? I prefer Abraham’s link up play in this system and he’s such a unique type of threat. Uses his strength well without giving away many fouls. He’s a more complete forward than the others competing for his role IMO. Not that I would be outraged if someone else took the role. As I said it’s a preference.
Foden was brilliant again. If some of his crosses were converted or we had a striker, he would have potentially got a few assists seems to be starting most games now and having a big impact.
Foden was exceptional last night, everything good seemed to come down that City left hand side. Stones doing really well too and another clean sheet, him and Dias seemed to have forged a great partnership. Bit of a leftfield choice as I didn't rate him in the past but I really thought Targett played well at LB and could be an option as backup to Chilwell. Brilliant last night and really solid whenever I've watched Villa this season. Personally thought Grealish and Barkley were disappointing but City didn't really let them impose themselves on the game.
I think it fair to give them a pass for last night, especially Barkley. Villa hadn't played for almost three weeks, and Barkley for a couple of months.
Pope was very good. Coming well for the corners. Some good saves aswell. Tom Heaton said in the studio that Grealish came back from England duty saying he couldn’t believe how hard it was to score past him. 🧤Most PL clean sheets since the start of last season:26 Ederson22 NICK POPE20 Kasper Schmeichel19 David De Gea pic.twitter.com/AOw1Myim36— Sky Sports Statto (@SkySportsStatto) January 21, 2021
Didn’t see the match tonight but not hearing good reports about TAA once again. Most players go through dips in form so hopefully he regains his form for the Euro’s but it must be a slight concern for Southgate since he’s been off since the start of the season.
I wouldn’t be as worried now as I was a year ago because reece james is easily good enough to cover him
That will be our downfall. We have tons of talent but fatigue will hinder us at the euros. Selfish club sides couldn't give two hoots about the national team
