"So how can we reconcile the growing evidence that children attending school seem to have an important role in transmission of SARS-CoV-2 with the evidence from Ismail and colleagues’ study? The answer is likely to lie in the low probability that children will experience disease that would have been picked up by the passive surveillance during the study period. This would imply that many outbreaks would have been missed and have been larger than identified. Furthermore, the partial reopening of schools in June and July with small bubbles and much fewer children attending, particularly in secondary education, might have led to considerably less within-school transmission than the reopening of schools to all children after the summer. In summary, Ismail and colleagues’ study supports the notion that opening of schools despite SARS-CoV-2 circulation in the community is largely safe for children, but secondary schools in particular might nevertheless play a considerable role in transmission between households."

it's hogwash that schools have been in session with minimal problems. the infection rates for kids are high. the deaths, as they began, are modest. you cite one and not the other and ignore who the kids might be spreading it to when they go home.

epidemiology 101 is schools spread stuff like mad. and the twist is they rarely have deaths but they are the vector. are you suggesting you never get sick from a bug the kids bring home?

the data is schools can reopen when community transmission is low. essentially when there is no virus around to ping pong. we cannot be bothered to get community spread low where this is actually true. false premise for US warehouse schooling.

on this you're just being stupid. no sense sugar coating it. Biden won the election by about 70 electoral votes and several million popular votes. the courts denied the lawsuits and the congress confirmed the result. your beef about the result at this point is sour grapes with no evidence anything actually took place. essentially like trump's prior obama birtherism. no dem can ever win legitimately -- even though we have won 7 of the last 8 popular votes and 5 of the last 8 presidencies. you can't say biden is from kenya so the man who was mentored by mccarthy's lawyer cohn implies he lost the election.

so you have a bs factual claim -- ruled on by courts and congress to be clear -- then used to frenzy people into smashing congress the other day, with weapons around. and after that you want to make fun of locking the city down while we enforce the election result with formal transfer of power? this is like finishing the elector count the other day. this has to be done this way if you care about democracy.

to be clear -- WHEN THE VOTERS VOTED -- INCLUDING ME BY MAIL -- AND THE RESULT IS WHAT IT IS -- AND THE SECRETARIES OF STATE CERTIFY -- AND THE COURTS SIGN OFF -- AND CONGRESS SIGNS OFF -- IN A DEMOCRACY -- WE ARE EFFING DONE. THIS IS GROTESQUE AND YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED.

the ones trying to "steal" it are the ones who were saying it was rigged before it started, the ones who lost the votes, the ones who lost in the courts, the ones who lost in congress, the ones without proof, the ones who tried to smash in congress the other day. to those people it didn't matter how it actually came out, they are going to force the result. this is not how democracy works.

to be further clear, your problem is trump ran off the suburban voters and just enough moderate republicans to swing the race. if you look at the results in many states, despite all the "got 75 million votes" happy talk, trump often received fewer votes than his senate candidate, eg cornyn. what clearly happened is many moderate republicans couldn't hold their nose and split their ballot. your party discipline can't accept that demonstrable fact so the blues had to conspire to steal it. this ignores how many times the dems have won presidential votes since 1990.

the problem the GOP faces is Trumpism is a national election loser -- he only got the job by the electoral college -- eroding votes -- but enforced by party discipline. if you wanted to win you would slide ever so slightly left on some issues. but rather than do that you're in the voter surpression business trying to stay way right but win by having voters turned away or votes not counted.

i voted by mail. i voted biden. do i not exist? are we all fake? the technical positions most dems take are valid but p*ss me off. secretary of states signed off, etc. how about, i voted by mail, my vote counts, cumulatively all our votes count, backed up by every court elections board congress that looked at it --- scoreboard. i get angry with the implication my vote is fake. my vote and all the rest were the law of the land when the elections took place.

and bluntly the theory we should also show up in person to show ID to vote in the middle of a pandemic is one of the dumbest things i have ever heard, symptomatic of the broader loss of your minds going on. it's not getting hotter or stormier, the virus is a hoax, the economy would have been fine, coal and factories are coming back, you won the election......on what planet do you live?

losers like you stay home. My kids went to school and played full athletic seasons, if it was a big issue schools would have had massive outbreaks. They didn’t. Deal with it

re the WMD folks, i wouldn't be surprised if they are at all such serious, super bowl type events just in case. everything is political so since the other party is in power let's overreact and suggest the proper response is pants down and see if Coup Attempt 2 or an assassination can happen. WMD might be excessive -- though under the circumstances you have lost the planning benefit of the doubt -- and we do have to prepare at some level for iran or hezbollah or ISIS and not just you lot, or have you forgotten since trump took office -- but I have told friends this reminds of 68 and if you know what the risks to high profile figures in 68 were you'd just shut up.

to flip this around -- trump acted like he was going to walk down the street but he gave the speech behind a bulletproof glass screen then went in his hardened home.

this was probably never going to be a mass crowd event with dems and covid but y'all lost the right to come watch (or even to mock the security and demand on open event) when you couldn't behave yourselves the past two months. stabbings, riots.

is that supposed to make me feel bad? it only makes me question your intellect. there is a tiny group of fringe liberals who find such things triggering and upsetting. the rest of us are tough people who work capitalist gigs before voting blue, who just think you're being classless trolling assh*les. anyone with a brain is looking for ways to not deal with crowds right now.

to be clear, the mueller report documents hundreds of meetings/texts/messages with russians. do you think they were exchanging borscht recipes? do you not get how a US campaign meeting with foreigners repeatedly is weird and SHOULD trigger counter intelligence responses?

what they couldn't prove and wouldn't imply was that someone meeting with the russians that much probably agreed to emails-for-something. that was always going to be a hard "ask" because if a trumpite meets a russian, and the trumpite is willing to lie or go to jail before he will flip, and the russian is beyond jurisdiction and unlikely to admit what he did........how are we proving the last bit of the conspiracy? well, he asked russia on TV for the emails. stone asked hackers for them as well. but i guess that's too obvious.

let's be real, if this happened 40 years ago he would have been gone based on what hit the news and what he said in public. times have changed, shared values have eroded, and basically we have learned there is literally nothing he could do that would get him impeached. not quid pro quo russia for oppo. not quid pro quo ukraine for a biden investigation. not ask georgia to change election results. not tell people to use force on congress to change an election. nothing. that's gross.

this is not complicated. at the rate we are vaccinating people the public is not going to be secure to drop measures this year, in even the countries trying hard. and we're not trying hard. y'all are the "herd immunity" people. well, do y'all grasp that vaccinations only one by one add to the number to get to "herd?" and that until you're at or near herd you're still vulnerable?

the numbers i've calculated or seen done for a virus with an R-0 of 4 or 5 is that you have to infect or vaccinate 75-80% of everyone to stop the public health problem. we're talking 250m+ sick or vaccinated. trump liked to play up vaccine but at the rate he's been doing it we might hit herd years from now. until then you live with the virus and in countries that give a crap you take measures like you have it. we have such crap vaccine efforts we haven't even gotten to the "anti vaxxer" part of the problem yet where we have to decide whether to compel people to vaccinate to try and end this. and i await that sort of easy policy becoming a political football in your absolutist world.

does it not give you pause that australia is not exactly an SSR and has more stringent measures? NZ? taiwan? you rattled off that lame crap as though these are communist dictatorships. the reality is we have worse numbers than pretty much every liberal democracy as well. the deal is anything less than total libertarian freedom and mini government is intolerable ergo we can't do a thing about it ergo if sickened or killed you're just going to be the cost of doing business this way. patrick put it different but it's what the whole movement of you thinks, is the economy is everything and anyone is expendable to it. even if the policies actually extend the pandemic and retard that same economy.

I don’t see any restrictions in Montgomery county - restaraunts and bars are all fully seated with no masks on patrons. I’ll bet Harris cty is pretty lax too.

we are also having the highest number of infections and hospitalizations since the beginning of the pandemic.

Not according to SETRAC and TMC, peak was July. No chart shows January higher than July for ICU or hospitalizations.

This is smart by Abbott, City and County health officers are unelected left-wing losers who try to push “social justice” issues by calling them public health issues. Plus they spent all summer trying to close schools down only to have them open with minimal problems!! Flat wrong doomers!!
