I’d rather have no width with Mendy all the way back defending. Just attack through the right if needs be. But having mendy up there will do two things. Firstly it will kill all attacks down that side. The guy can only run and shoot. He cannot cross, pass or dribble. secondly it means he’s way up the pitch if we lose the ball, so he can’t do what he’s really good at, which is defending.
Except he is one of the fastest players in world football, he has a insane recovery pace. anyway What I’m proposing is nothing new, we’ve used the 4312 (with Hazard/Vinicius and Benzema) up top and a 451 (with either Benzema or Jovic playing the lone striker role ) last year with Mendy as our LB, not only did we do fine defensively we did much better than we’re currently doing with the 4-3-3 with Mendy supposedly staying back.
