Pretty sure that the mayor can make that call. Not to mention, I thought they had been activated and are on stand by: where are they? At minimum, there should have been a bigger law enforcement at the Capitol given what was taking place today. That was a no brainer. Trump is not going to push too quickly to get things back in line: this is EXACTLY what he wanted and has (we can argue consciously or not) pushed for in the last 3mos...
The RWNM spends years feeding fear, mistrust, and disinformation and now they're shocked that the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
Yeah that is why I asked, I am sure Trump is happy with what is going on, but if the DC Mayor can send in the guard, then he should, do the same that was done a few months ago (that time Trump gave the order to gas the protesters I believe).
No. Unlike the governor of a state, the Mayor of DC has almost no real authority. She can only request that the NG be deployed, but it is up to the DoD to actually deploy them. A request that they have denied, BTW.
Doesn't change the obvious fact that the preparation in terms of security were deplorable. As stated, something like that was always likely to happen and there should have been some kind of contingency for it.
We’ve been given gas masks on the House floor. Tear gas has been used in the Rotunda.— Rep. Gerry Connolly (@GerryConnolly) January 6, 2021
But it'd not DC's fault it's the Fed's fault. As you know the current head of the federal government has encouraged this activity. This is the same administration responsible for the coronavirus response.
Well if Song and Yoshou are right, then it is hard to prepare for it, when the people in charge of preparing for it, want it to happen. Trump's DoD is not going to send the NG against Trump supporters.
I'm not really interested in placing blame on anyone in particular. My point is whoever has jurisdiction over the building should have known for the potential for trouble to erupt given what is happening today, in conjunction with a pro Trump protest taking place today as well. If it was the job of the FBI for instance, fine they should have seen it coming and done more in order to be prepared for something like this.
They’re in the chamber. One is up on the dais yelling “Trump won that election!” This is insane pic.twitter.com/p6CXhBDSFT— Igor Bobic (@igorbobic) January 6, 2021
I understand there's a coup attempt in progress, so perhaps this isn't the right time to say this, but is it really this easy to take over the US Capitol? Just get a bunch of mouth breathers ginned up and climb some walls and knock down a door or two, and you're in? Jesus, what a security breach. Heads should ********ing roll for this. Also, I've come to assume that right wing goons can do almost anything and avoid prosecution. Weren't the Malheur invaders just let off, Scott-free? These traitors need to be rounded up and thrown in jail. They are literally attempting to overthrow the federal government.
More than 300 National Guard personnel have been activated in D.C. this week to support the city government as it responds to the demonstrations calling on Congress not to certify Biden's Electoral College victory. President Trump has made various unsubstantiated claims of election fraud ahead of the congressional count. The Guardsmen were activated following a request by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and Christopher Rodriguez, director of the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, on behalf of the District's Metropolitan Police Department and Fire and Emergency Services. The Hill
Many will be arrested, but probably will juts get probation at most (unless they have a prior criminal record).
The Capitol Hill police is federal but under Congress' control not the administration. All they know about doing is standing on corners checking for truck bombs. They haven't done anything else in 20 years and maybe 70 since Puerto Rican militants took over the Capitol.
BTW, anyone on Fox that says "This is not who we are" have not been paying attention at what has been happening in state capitals for years. Armed "protestors" forcing their way into government buildings has been something the RW extremists have been doing ever since Trump took office (even before then). They continue to do so because the police have completely failed to stop them from doing this and their Republican cheerleaders have encouraged them to do so. Much like the Trump Presidency, this is just the latest form of extremism that the Republican party and its conservative media echo chamber has created and nourished for decades.
There is a major failure from the Capitol police...I wonder if it is intentional. That does not make any sense. People form DC know the amount of Police in the City , specially Downtown and on the Hill. By the way, someone has been shot.
Like I said, Mayor Bowser had to request that they be deployed. If she were a governor, it would have just said that she activated the NG.
It is intentional. You can walk across the Mall in half the time since protesters took the chamber floor. Police aren't coming to help.
