Does anyone here pay attention to American Soccer Analysis? They have some interesting statistics I think. If you read up on their goals added statistic and then look at the table and filter for RSL players some interesting things pop out. If I'm understanding this right, a positive goals added statistic is obviously better, the higher the number the more likely that player is to create a scoring opportunity or break up a scoring opportunity for the opposing team. A negative number seems like it would then imply that player is more likely to give up the ball/concede scoring opportunities to the opposing team. According to that statistic, Kreilach and Baird are our worst players...

This makes a lot of sense actually. We already know that the guys weren't practicing hard enough and that's why no one could usurp the starting XI. We need someone to light a fire under their asses.

One thing you could actually count on from RSL last year, more than anything else, was playing overly aggressive. We consistently committed more fouls than our opponents and had a knack for tackles that would make you cringe. If Pablo's sell is "more bite" then I think 2021 RSL might break records for most cards in league history

Here is a quote from another article on that site:

"Remember when Real Salt Lake’s Corey Baird was really, really good? It was 2018, and the exciting, fresh-faced winger picked up the Rookie of the Year trophy on the strength of an 8 goal, 5 assist season. That led to non-stop hype from the MLS punditocracy, and earned the kid his first USMNT appearance the following January. Yeah, about that. Baird’s been awful this year; his g+ of -1.58 is 2nd-to-worst amongst MLS wingers, and 6th-worst amongst all players in the league with 600 or more minutes. The specifically putrid aspects of his game are a -0.36 dribbling g+, -0.37 passing g+, and a comically bad -0.71 in receiving g+. There are other things going on at RSL, like the chaos around their racist owner being forced to step down, and the fact that their only win in the past 6 outings was against the woeful LA Galaxy. Baird’s just one of several problems at RSL right now. But you can’t really be called a good team if one of your key players is having a very bad year."

Last year he was truly terrible. While his goal scoring went down in 2019, much of our positive play that year had him involved even when he didn't earn an assist. But in 2020, aside from the one jaw-droppingly good goal against Portland, almost nothing positive came through him.

Apparently I didn't pick the best day to post this. Trying again to get some discussion going. Also, Rubin is official.

Not sure about the rest of you, but the shit that happened yesterday really put this soccer thing in perspective. Just didn't feel like posting anything while we had people dying at the Capitol.

    Anyways

The Rubin signing is meh for me. We're so damn desperate for any news that it's importance is being blown out of proportion. I think it's a bit ridiculous to go sign a guy that was a (good) USL player to the roster when we parted ways with actual academy products in the same/similar position and, unless I'm overblowing either side, the same level of talent. He seems VERY similar to a Douglas Martinez in that he's be great as a developmental piece, possibly, but asking him to be anything close to a starter or a consistent cog is asking too much.

What is scary is how similar our roster is for 2021 to 2020 and how little room Fall has given himself to improve it. With Rubin, we're at 26 player on the roster from my count. There seems to be this belief from some (including MLS writers) that this team is better than it performed. I can agree with that, but only to a point. We have the talent to be a playoff team, sure, but I don't think it's a top level talent. And I don't think we're a striker away from that, either. But I'd love to be wrong.

    My point:
I think Fall has pretty much exhausted the moves he should make before ownership comes in. I'm also thinking that, unless this new ownership group comes in really fast and ready to go, we wont see any player additions until the Summer window. It sucks, but we'd get price gouged negotiating a transfer so close to the Winter window closing, if the ownership group is even in place. We should also learn the lesson of free transfers in the winter window - we're not good at them

As to how to spend the remaining roster slots:
    1. Starting Striker
    2. Starting level CB (but not one you break the bank on)
    3. MLS level CM
    4. Outside back

That Rubin article in Soapbox is hilarious. It's all about a forward who was overhyped at a young age... got an injury... loads of transfers and loans to other clubs culminating in second division Mexico and then a San Diego team that I may have been able to play on 8 years ago, where....

He scored 4 goals in 5 games!!! Sounds impressive.

Until you realize that 3 came in one match.

Look, I have scored 3 goals in a match on occasion against a particular defender that had a bad day. But if I don't score consistently, it doesn't matter. In the other 4 matches he got 1 goal. That's not good even by USL standards.

The main thing he did is that he stood up against homophobic slurs. That means he is the antithesis of Deloy. Not a bad character thing to do, but does that mean you should be the highlight of our offseason?

The team needs a new Spine and we have 4 spots to fill it. Elliott's short and stubby tenure will be defined by his ability to be 'ready to go' when the new owner's come in with a very executable plan he can roll out in quick fashion.

    We all have our doubts.

Yeah. This concerns me too. New ownership is going to want some flexibility. He's kind of setting it up to make it difficult for new ownership by signing so many guys.

However, maybe that's what it took to keep anybody around?

Whatta ya mean we need a forward:

    Baird, Corey
    Brody, Andrew
    Chang, Maikel
    Garcia, Chris
    Iloski, Milan
    Martinez, Douglas
    Meram, Justin
    Ramirez, Jeizon
    Rubin, Rubio
    Schmitt, Tate

. . . and this doesn't include Damir Kreilach. We've got forwards galore!

A little bit of faith in Meram on that list. He started to do some nice things near end of season. But the rest really do not exist for me, except Jeizon who potentially has some upside. And I'm even concerned there based on how long it took him to break the lineup last season and the little time he received when he did.

I'm upset Iloski didn't see any game time. He was ripping it up with the Monarchs just like Baird was before his 1st season with the 1st team.

In modern soccer, the term forward has started to include winger. Those two positions are very different. I wish they'd modernize the groupings.

    Well, Putna is back

I don't understand this move from a player selection perspective. It makes me fear that Freddy still won't play Ochoa. Our GK's were anything but stellar last year and the club has decided to stay with all of the same ones.

Further, unless I'm counting wrong, Fall just removed another open roster spot to put the active roster at 27 players. I know it is the usual thing to carry 3 gk's on the roster, but I think there was an opportunity to only carry 2 and leverage the Monarchs if the club got into a bad situation.
