Good News! I just heard on the radio newscast that the Crew are playing New England for the Eastern Conference Championship! I guess winning the cup must haver been a dream!
First time I saw it in person was at the 2009 preseason event at Fados downtown. Brian Carroll was guarding it and it was a while before I realized he wasn't a teenage intern.
So are season ticket holders going to get a chance to see/take a picture with the cup or is it just Nordecke holders?
If they're going by seniority, I'll be able to get a picture in May or so. It's neck to neck between the picture and the vaccine.
Just curious: Is this our cup to keep in a trophy cabinet? Or does this cup go back to the league for next years champion? I think the Stanley Cup gets each Champions name engraved and it gets bigger every so many years. I’ve not seen any other clubs listed on the MLS cup. What’s the real deal?
It was set up by the Nordecke, but was open to non-Nordecke members. I am not sure all the channels they sent it out on but I saw it on Twitter and via email. It was pretty last minute and I am sure there will be other opportunities, especially next season.
Columbus needs a bigger cabinet, we've now got two cups. One of them has Gino Padula's teeth marks in the rim.
I got an email to take a picture with it today and I’m not in the Nordecke. I am a season ticket holder.
About that: The one from MLS Cup 2008 was damaged. The original plan was to give us a shiny replica to keep. It was later decided that we keep the one from the game. If the league doesn't play CalvinBall, then we'll eventually get a shiny replica to display. The "real" one will go back to the league and be hoisted by us in our new stadium in 2021. You're correct on the Stanley Cup, but older rings get removed as newer rings fill up.
I think the original is heavier too and perhaps a little larger. But I might be wrong. I do know the original was quite heavy, as I was in charge of it at the airport for about 20 minutes.
I know the club was fairly casual with access to the '08 cup. A friend who's a teacher in Worthington, was able to pretty easily arrange for Frankie Hejduk to bring the cup to his school. As I recall, Frankie just plucked it out of the trophy case and returned it when he got back.
Just a reminder for posterity that not only did we win the Cup, but we slaughtered the opponent in a manner no other MLS Cup Final has seen.
My dad, my boys, and I got a photo with the Cup prior to the playoff game with the Red Bulls in 2015. I assumed it was the 2008 Cup because I didn't thing MLS would be hauling the 2015 model around prematurely for a game when the Cup itself was not at stake.
