Try to bottle this feeling up. Keep it close. Remember what it felt like when Zelarayan found the upper left corner past Frei's big paw. When you saw the fireworks go off and it was Mensah with the cup in the air. Buy some new gear. Tell everyone you know the Crew are champions. Savor everything you can. It doesn't happen every year, and even if it did, life is so garbage sometimes we have to enjoy it when things go our way. What a club this is. Proud to be a Columbus Crew fan.
No. Particularly not the Crew. They had very little last night and sold out quickly. A helpful team flunkie kept cheerfully telling everyone to just buy it on line.
I'm pretty sure that Myers said that the game was over after it went to print and the majority of the coverage in print will be on Monday.
Terrific piece in The Athletic about Aiden Morris and the Crew. It starts with this photo posted by Melissa Presthus which she took at the RedBulls playoff game in 2017. Morris and teammates from the U17's. "... On Thursday, with Nagbe ruled out, Porter told Morris he was stepping into the starting lineup. Morris called his dad, Ross, who had just come off the training field in Ft. Lauderdale with Aidan’s brother, Jake, who once played in the Sounders’ academy. “I almost drove the car off the road,” Ross Morris said from the stadium concourse in the minutes after the win, having made the trip up to Columbus to see his son fulfill a dream..... ....Porter was always convinced this is how the team should operate. Even in the biggest of moments, a coach who has always been loyal to his instincts once again trusted his gut. And, like Sanchez all those years before, when he first scouted a kid down in Miami, Porter thought Morris’ attributes made it a no-brainer. “If a guy is good enough, I’m going to give him the chance,” Porter said in the post-game press conference, seconds after being soaked in champagne by defender Josh Williams. “But if he’s not, I’m not. I’m not a lover of playing young guys just to do it, but Aidan Morris is a winner, he’s a fighter. I knew it. I knew it in the games I played him and I’ve seen him in training. When I knew Darlington was out, he was the guy that was going to go in.”.... “It’s resiliency,” Morris said from the celebratory locker room, shouting out to his former academy coach Ben Cross as he walked by. “It’s something Caleb instilled in our head the whole year. Sticking to the game plan, sticking to the (identity of the club) and the traditions we hold to.”..... Aidan Morris: The embodiment of the Columbus Crew's fight – The Athletic
You know, I'm not at all sure that it's even possible but it's pretty clear that Caleb Porter will badly want his Crew team to be the first MLS side to win the CCL. He loves him some hardware, he loves making history,, he loves a story and that's one trophy that no MLS coach can claim.
He's not a "we're just happy to be here" guy. No sense entering if you're not going to try and win. I figure there is room for a 2nd highest paid player DP signing at the very least. No reason we can't make a run at it. Same for the Open Cup. Next year will be a lot of fun.
Congratulations Columbus Crew. Your guys were full value for the win. they played a great game. Hope to see you in the CCL final. It will definitely be better than the Trillium Cup.
Perhaps it's just me, but there seems to be a correlation between waking up the fan of an MLS champion, and waking up with a modest hangover.
