Are we sure it was MLS that rejected the bid?

Del Loy Hansen is in charge of selling his own franchise for six months, with it only passing to MLS if he cannot or does not sell within that window. Word is he asked for more money - but it may also be a rumor. Smith did make several statements that he was interested and ready to buy.

That's what I thought.. I also heard he is asking for $500 million. That seems high, but then we're talking about the stadium, an MLS, NWSL, and USL team, and a residency and a non-residency academy... That's definitely a lot of things, but only the MLS and stadium are money generating at this point...

If the academy has been paid for in full I imagine it can become revenue generating very soon.

I believe the schooling part of the residency program is paid (not counting scholarships, of course), but the non-residency academy and soccer portion of the residency program is free.

So...with the season coming to a close....both Greg Vaney and Brian Schmetzer aren't under contract for next season.....that's insane.

If I'm the LA Galaxy I'm on the phone with both of their agents everyday until one of them accepts.

The office manager will have to order a few cases of small notepads and pencils.

So I didn't see this coming. Greg Vanney just stepped down per the Athletic.

I wonder if he’s eyeing the Galaxy job.

    That's a good shout.

What's going on with Schmetzer's contract? I'm starting to become concerned.

TFC to join CPL??? (Borden in 3-2-1....). I wonder if Vanney was worried about playing another CV-19 season at a home from home.

I'd like to see a world-class coach at TFC. They're one of the few clubs who could make that sort of investment.

Vanney to Charlotte? He is a Virginian.

I'm not sure why Vanney would leave TFC for another MLS team? He's really already done everything that can be done in MLS, from rebuilding a struggling team and taking them to a league leader and he really couldn't find a better team to coach for in the league. WRT resources, TFC was spending more money than pretty much any other club and I'm not sure why he'd go to the Galaxy given their FO issues. I would think Vanney is hoping to follow Marsch's example, get an assistant job in mid-tier European league and then translate that it into a manager job, or just skip the assistant entirely.

    I would like to change my previous comment;

So, he's looking for a project team, in that case, Galaxy or Charlotte would certainly be a good option.

I'm not sure why Schmetzer would go to Toronto unless they give him a massive money hat. It would basically be a like for like exchange. From what I understand, Schmetzer is giving the Sounders a bit of a hometown discount right now and may be looking to rectify that. He also has said there are issues with compensation for his assistants and may be tying that to his contract negotiations as well.

On the other hand, despite the large fan base, the Sounders don't have a deep pocket owner like the other top clubs, can't absorb losses very well, and generally seem interested in at least breaking even, if not turning a profit. So I could definitely see the Sounders trying to lowball Schmetzer either on his compensation, or that of his assistants. If that's not something Schmetzer wants to do...

Another thing to consider.. Pineada. There is no secret that Pineada is getting attention across the league for head coaching jobs and that Schmetzer views Pineada as his successor. I'd be curious if Schmetzer is trying to line-up his departure from head coaching and included in that is Pineada replacing him as Sounders head coach.

Marsch was internally promoted to an mid-upper management position in a $20 billion global corporation.

If Vanney goes to Europe it will be at Smörgåsbord FC and it'll take years to get noticed.

I don't think his record outside of the Canadian Championship is that great. Last season Toronto finished 14 points behind NYCFC despite having twice the payroll and his faith in Bradley is mystifying.

    TFC 2020 record:

    Bradley 90 minutes: 1.3 ppg
Bradley not in squad: 2.2 ppg

Schmetzer is probably angling for a move upwards at Seattle. I can't see him leaving after 40 years (professionally), 58 years (personally).

Trivia: in his first 44 games at Sounders in the A-League Schmetzer went 37-6-1.

He's also won the SS once, been to the MLS Cup 3 times (winning one), and made the playoffs in 5 of the 6 full seasons he was there. While you certainly have a point with Marsch moving up within an organization, angling for an assistant job (or even bypassing for a manager job) is still a viable path for Vanney. Vanney's only 46 years old and has at least a decade and a half left in his career. He could easily work his way up in that time..

I fully agree with this one. Do all of you forgot how incredibly thrash Toronto was before Vanney?. Vanney made TFC as an MLS cup contender every year. Before him it was always contender for wooden spoon :p

This also coincided with them spending big money on quality players. He has certainly had a top-tier roster throughput much of his tenure.

That being said, managing an elite roster can be just as challenging as managing an average one. I bet he can get higher marks from his players if a Euro club calls to inquire about him. What do you think Wayne Rooney would say about Ben Olsen?

Glad the Rapids already signed Fraser. I wonder if he had stayed around another year if TFC would have considered promoting internally and handing him the reins.
