But when they absolutely suck at home in the CL just a couple days ago you simply zip it and act like you don't know.

This is now also the thread where we're going to pretend Haaland didn't play 90 minutes vs Köln today but post "MUST GET THIS GUY!" once he scores again.

It's almost like every player has a game to forget about from time to time, were you under the impression that those of us who want to sign Halaand thought he would score EVERY single game?

He had a shocker today. He can’t complain about lack of service. Just missed chances

I think he's a fantastic young player but sometimes I wonder how players would perform in the eyes of this forum when placed under the microscope that Real Madrid players are placed.

Also one thing I didn't like: Articles about Håland being unhappy with "Dortmund's ambitions" on social media the minute the final whistle was blown. Can't fault Raiola for playing the market but damn man. Let this sit for a minute.

I’ll just leave these two videos here that bring back all of those memories from Mexico 86. Maradona was on another level that summer .. His 5 goals , 5 assists, contributing to 10 out of 14 total goals scored by Argentina in the tournament is probably a stat that will remain as record for a very long time. RIP legend
The best player I ever saw..
Those who were alive at the time can probably remember how his game starting getting better and better as the tournament progressed .. by the time Argentina reached the semis he was unplayable.

Maybe those players were kicking each other more because they didn't know how to play football? Probably because a lot of them weren't even professional players.

I will never agree with people who say players from the 60s or 80s are better than the ones we have today. So I'm not even sure why I'm joining in this. Moreso considering that account already got banned.

Players like Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and <insert your old national best player> were outliers in their era, which made them stand out. Very talented without a doubt. But football from that time can not be compared to football today.

You were playing against amateurs in many cases, hence why they stood out so much, and even professionally the game has evolved by leaps and bounds that we're talking about different levels. Look at a game from those times and you will think your screen is playing in slow motion.

Maradona got massive media popularity for holding up a ball. That's not considered special anymore because any talented player can do those tricks. Hell, I've seen low tier players (Ajax) being able to hit a soda can with a ball from half a field away. Maradona got so much attention around the world for that, because at that time it wasn't so normal.

The players could kick a person though. And some people apparantly think that makes their playing field much harder vs today's better opponents in professionality, physique, talent and tactics. I don't agree with those people at all.

Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and Maradona were surrounded by a ton of fantastic players.. SerieA where Maradona played was an all stars league..
Garrincha, Tostao, Socrates, Zico, Rossi, Platini, Beckenbauer, Muller, Rummenigue, Kempes, Careca, Maldini, Baresi, Tardelli, Mattaus, Brehme, Gentile, Gullit, VanBasten, Baggio were all great players and there were so many more...
To say that KDB, Modric, Hazard, Casemiro, Lewandoski, Carvajal and others from today are better than those guys technically, physically and tactically is a huge understatement.
Does every top team today have world class defenders? i dont thinks so.. they all have one or two the most the others are average- Carvajal is already an average full back in my opinion.. Who does City have or Bayern.. are those guys really better than some of the best defenders from the 80s.. ?
Maradona probably ran more than Messi and Neymar.

Comparing against eras never makes sense, but what you said goes both ways. If Maradona stood out in those times because the level of competition was lower, that could also mean he would benefit from playing in our day

Or he could not stand out at all and just be part of the better group of players.

But that's a "what if", as opposed to looking at the facts that professional football has improved in all facets, that you play against professionals as opposed to somebody who is a baker by trade, that you can visibly see that physically the playing field has changed tremendously.

I for one would think it's a pretty bleak outlook to think that in 60+ years the sport has not improved, but somehow even devolved since the "best" players were around half a century ago. Especially when all the signs point to the opposite.

Exactly, which is why I started by saying it doesn't make sense to compare across eras.

There's nothing "what if" about thinking playing against somebody who plays football for a living and dedicates his all to improving himself as a player, is more difficult than playing against somebody who collects trash for a living and only puts on his cleats on the weekend while smoking all day every day. Welcome to the 80s.

Also backed by no (half) amateur team winning the top prizes these days. Teams have evolved, players have evolved, the sport has etc. etc.

Again, compare the games from then and now and you would think you are looking at slowmotion. Yet these players playing against lesser players are supposedly the best of all time? Nah.
