AJ with 15Gs in 25 matches in Sweden could be a Vela-lite force in MLS if he signs with a club that could get the ball to his feet around the 18!

Does an MLS team have his Bacon's rights or is he free?

Jonathan is one to really keep an eye on. Yet another player from DFW.
He played the majority of his club soccer at Solar. Has a Euro passport so didn't have to worry about the work permit in order to go to England.

This chart illustrates why we must have a strong domestic league to be competitive. We will never equal the European power’s numbers in the Champions League because it’s a European competition. But if we consistently rival Brasil’s numbers and combine that with a domestic league that is as good as the Brasileirão (or even Liga MX), we will be cooking with gas.

Eyes peeled on Schalke today. USYNTer Matthew Matthew Hoppe seems excited about something. He's been training with the first team. I haven't seen the 18 yet.

We have seemingly so many interesting U23 right backs, and they're all behind Dest. Matt Olosunde starting for Rotheram in the Championship again today. He's number 22, so it looks like he's actually the right wingback in a 3-5-2. 1-1 at the half. [CCV apparently is out injured for Bournemouth.]

I realize it's Schalke and all, but it's crazy to me that there's a YA starting in the Bundesliga that I've never heard of before.

The internet tells me he's a striker?

It depends what you mean by "strong domestic league" and "be competitive". I dont this chart illustrates what you think and believe we will be competitive before we have a strong domestic league.

The quality and quantity of young prospects looks to be continuing grow at a rapid rate. The numbers of these prospects going abroad at 16/18 is growing significantly and MLS finally looks to be willing to sell young players is going to grow the euro based pool by multiples.

To be competitive, a team needs a pool of 30 to 50 top players. To have a strong domestic league, the league needs 300 to 500 top domestic players. I have never understood why people think the latter is needed for the prior to occur.

I think there is very high probability of becoming competitive in the next 5 to 6 years. I think the probability of MLS becoming a strong league with domestic talent in that time period is low.

Target forward from California. Big kid. At least 6'2". Prolific in the development academy for the Barca Arizona academy. Scored a gazillion goals in the 2018/2019 season. Moved to Schalke, and did OK for their U19s in 2019/2020. However, nothing that jumped off the page.

Schalke is purging anybody on a big salary. Hoppe starting says a lot about their current position. Regardless, this is a good opportunity for Matthew to state a case.

Our U20 attacking group is becoming a little nutso. All we need is Johan Gomez to break into the Porto first team. Cam Harper's breakthru at Celtic seems imminent. Then the year will just be insane.

Seriously, we're not talking about the USMNT or the U23s. This is the U20-eligible national team!!! I'm pulling it out of my butt. For the sake of argument I'm going to move Otasowie to CB and put Johnny in midfield over Busio. I'm going to give us Musah. I won't give us Efrain Alvarez yet.

    --------------------------------Hoppe (Schalke)--------------------
Llanez (Heerenveen)-----------Reyna (Dortmund)-----------de la Fuente (Barca)
    -------Tessmann (Dallas)----------Musah (Valencia)--------------
    ----------------------Johnny (Internacional)------------------------
    Bello (Atlanta)--------Otasowie (Wolves)---Tomkinson (Norwich)-------Araujo (LAG)
    ---------------------Odunze (Leicester)-----------------------

    Bench:
    Garcia (RSL)
    Reynolds (Dallas)
    Hernandez-Foster (Wolfsburg)
    Carrera (Holstein Kiel)
    Busio (SKC)
    Kayo (Wolfsburg)
    Bassett (Colorado)
    Clark (NYRB)
    Harper (Celtic)
    Gomez (Porto)
    Pepi (FCD)

They have injuries and they're putting everybody on a big salary up for sale.
St. Louis native Vedad Ibisevic, for instance, has been told his contract will be terminated on December 31st. Amine Harit, Nabil Bentaleb, and others as well are being shown the door.

The Schalke chairman said this week that they're "tearing themselves apart." They were hundreds of millions of dollars in debt before the COVID crisis. They seem like a club that could do the 'ole double relegation down to the 3rd division. Its a sad tale, but it is opening up opportunities for young players. I don't know what's going on with another American there, Nick Taitague. Knowing his history, he's probably injured.

Schalke are NOT playing like one of the worst teams in this season. They should always play like this.

And just like that their inside mids lose their shape and get beat on the counter for the score.

Starting striker Palo out with a knee injury, backup striker Ibisevic terminated for getting in a fight with the assistant coach. Starting AM Harit , starting CM Bentaleb , and CB/DM Stambouli suspended. Starting CB Sane injured on international duty. Player with a positive COVID. The joke was we would not be able to field a team.

Unfortunately Nick T was sent down to the U23s but lets hope Hoppe does better with his chance than Haji Wright did with his!

2020 has been freakin wild from a USMNT perspective. Can you imagine that happening a decade ago that we all just casually miss that?

How many top players do you think we have now? I’d say maybe 5-6. Depends on the definition, so that’s why I ask.

In my estimation, we have a long way to go to get to 30-50 top players. There are only a few ways for us to get there:

    - have a dual citizen developed in another system choose to play for us. Like Dest, or hopefully Musah.

    - have a kid go from here to European finishing school at a relatively young age (15-16). Like Gio or Pulisic

    - develop a kid here until at least the age of 18

The first two categories will always have a limited number of players in them, as they both require dual citizenship. I don’t think we will have enough players from those two paths to get even close to 30-50 top players.

Note this is not a statement about the value of the players from those paths. I love dual citizens. I am one. I just don’t think the numbers are there.

So, we have to be able to develop kids to the age 18 at least well enough so that if/when they make the jump they are good enough to play at the highest levels.

I think they need high level games available here to be able to do that. Hence the need for a good domestic league.

The other thing a good league does for you is give a path to that occasional later developing player. If we need to get to 30-50 top players from where we are now, it’ll help if we can find one or two that were missed earlier in the process.

Do you think we will get to 30-50 top players in the next 5-6 years? Where will they be playing? What would their path be to the top level?

In the past World Cups, Uruguay made Semis, Quarters, and the R16. They did so with squads ranging from 7 to 14 players in the Top-5. That would be a realistic level we could reach in the near term.

Uruguay is an Amazing little story, they also had 2 absolutely elite strikers of the same age.

Pulisic played on that level for about 2 months last season. Nobody else in the pool has done so but I don’t see why we can’t do it. They only have 3 million people!
