Watching Magico videos and hearing stories about him from the older Salvadorans make me bittersweet about Magico. Sweet that he was extremely talented and on par with Maradona, but bitter that he had a rebellious attitude and refused offers from huge clubs to stay with the lesser known club Cadiz; he could've been a LOT bigger and much more recognised.

Being a Barcelona supporter, I'm sad he didn't sign with them. Imagine that. Regardless, he's still a legend; I wish he was a lot more known.

My dad used to serve him and the other 80's Salvadoran legend drinks at the roller rink/disco where he worked at in his early 20's so he has heaps of interesting stories (especially Pajaro). My mum went to school with his niece and apparently they both still keep in contact :)

I've always wanted to know, is there a reason why he only wanted to stay at Cadiz and not go anywhere else?

I'm reading that PSG, Fiorentina and Sampdoria wanted to sign him, but he remained at Cadiz. I also read that Magico rejected an offer from Atalanta and instead returned to ES to play for FAS.

Magico in a recent interview said he purposely played bad in front of the Atalanta's scouts while they watched him play in a couple of matches since he didn't want to leave. He was still with Cadiz when that was happening to the rumor was not entirely true.

PSG, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and Atalanta did want him but like he said countless times he never wanted to be with those clubs since he wouldn't last with them due to him not showing up at training most of the time and like to be out late nights. They wouldn't have dealt with his way of being. There's an example FC Barcelona had him just for some US tour match and he was already getting in trouble and FC Barcelona was pretty strict with him too and he didn't like it since he didn't feel comfortable about it. He was basically being irresponsible when he was playing/training for Valladolid. He returned to CD FAS due to his retiring age which was 33 at the time when he came back to CD FAS in 1991.

Something rare and amazing about him was he was naturally good without having to train. Basically having him have a terrible work rate but still got the job done when he needed to on the field during matches. I think this is one of the huge reasons why most Salvadoran professional players have terrible work rate due to influence from Magico. As for inspiration from on field (soccer skills and getting the job done) he's great but personality and outside of matches I would not take any of that besides him being humble. Learning from his mistakes and taking the positives from him is good. Just look at Rodolfo Zelaya, Eliseo Quintanilla, and a few others I can't remember at the moment these guys I won't say they were influenced by Magico but the way they act off field it seems to me like they try to imitate his life style in certain ways but in a negative way. Good work rate players of the recent past for La Selecta for influence are RDA, Cien, and Cerritos due to the kind of people they were on and off field, having a good work rate due to hard work to get what they achieved in the MLS. None of them compare to the level of Magico, which is an issue for the new younger generation in El Salvador which is why I didn't bring up Hugo Perez he's one of the positive influence on Salvadoran-Americans who want to play for the U.S. or even the La Selecta. It all depends on how Salvadoran-Americans want to take it for what he achieved in his career as a professional soccer player.

Magico is just "one" I doubt we're going to another player especially a Salvadoran who could play professionally with his lifestyle in modern professional soccer.

I remember the Salvadoran news were talking big about Magico's son around the time El Salvador beat Denmark in 2007. I think he was playing with some sort of youth team at the time in Cadiz. Ever since then I haven't heard anything about him.

Does anyone know how old is he now and where does he play?

I vaguely remember Cusca telling me back in 2009 that he doesn't play football anymore. He has to be in his late 20's now.
