getting stadium revenue from parking, food, beverages and renting out for special events is the only way the Caps and Lions can have a future- the days of staying at BC Place Stadium are coming to an end and a major decision will have to be made or goodbye to the 2 professional sports teams by 2023-2025

hopefully our provincial government agrees and helps in solving this sporting scene dilemma

The dilemma is self made. The Caps are in the tank due to the owner killing the market. The Lions lost a lot of paid fans due to being sub par for much of the last 6 years. It was not because of BC Place. That same BC Place averaged over 30k a game for the lions not too many years ago, and would have drawn big numbers if the Caps cared about being competitive.

Obviously owning a stadium is the best, but Kerfoot would pocket the revenues and not put it towards players anyways.

THe LIons need to build a winner and their attendance will rise back up.

Ultimately, the Lions fanbase is more so in the suburbs and certainly their own stadium in Surrey would be a very wise idea long term. That would be a great venue for a CPL team as well. I am not sure the MLS could do it out there as they rely heavily on the urban downtown and Kits crowd at Caps games. Cramming on a skytrain to Surrey would not be palatable for many downtowners as they live here so they don't have to travel around. At least for a CPL team, they an go with a smaller attendance and not have that pressure to get 20k+ a game.

BC Place is not facing any major decision; it will be around for a long time still. I don't see the government selling it because any opposition would smear them by comparing the selling price to what the reno's cost. They would have to sell it for 80 - 120 million at the most to be viable for the buyer. We still need a downtown stadium if we want to host concerts, trade shows, events like rugby sevens, etc. BC Place brings tens of millions of dollars to the city each year via economic activity and spending not related to the Caps and Lions. On its own it may run a small operating loss (this year an exception of course), but it is a major player as far as money spent in Vancouver by people and business. Losing the sports teams would look bad for optics, but the stadium still generates 200 dates a year (not this year of course) in use.

In saying that, if they are not recovering the convention and concert and trade show business by 2022, then the economics have changed permanently and then a major decision would be needed. That is still unknown until we see how people are after the covid shit.

the only evidence i could find about BC Place Stadium revenue is an article from 2014, written by Bob Mackin

    https://thetyee.ca/News/2014/03/28/BC-Place-Boondoggle/

    in his report, he stated:

In the end, what has the new roof amounted to?

Back in 2007-2008, the stadium suffered $3.955 million in losses. Under the new roof in 2012-2013, it lost $13.036 million. Another $68.3 million of red ink is expected through 2015-2016.

the land it sits on must be near or over $1 000 000 000 in value (taking that the St Pauls Hospital land sold for near $1 bill and isnt on false creek)

if the stadium is constantly loosing revenue (keep in mind that both the Lions and Whitecaps are suffering smaller attendances which means less revenue) and is being subsidized by the provincial government, a case can be made for using the land for residences for the development of the area from Chinatown to the Creek and assist in building a 25 000 seat stadium with new Lions and Whitecap ownership that see their only way to salvaging their product is to have their own stadium

its a win-win-win- the government gets out from a white elephant and still makes hundreds of millions of dollars, and the 2 professional teams have a lifeline to resurrect and save their product

concerts and trade shows have options at rogers arena and the trade and convention center - they arent able to make BC Place a neutral or positive financial outcome anyways

the problem becomes- where to build a 25 000 seat outdoor stadium ? there are a lot of small and run-down businesses on the south side of terminal street, or the car wreck land along scott road in surrey- both have Skytrain stations

the bottom line is- both professional teams are facing revenue crises and will do so unless they get their own stadium in order to capture revenue lost at BC Place- a dual ownership group might be able to be found if the BC Government subsidized on a 50-50 % building partnership which would make the new stadium for a new ownership group far more attractive - we need another david braley or a group of david braleys

otherwise, the financial bleeding for the government, Lions and Whitecaps will continue, until 1 or both are history- when that happens, BC Place will be even more of a white elephant

The whitecaps are not in a bad revenue situation because of BC Place. They are because their season ticket based was decimated due to how the club is run. That is not BC Place's fault. They could have been filling that place game after game if they built a winning organization.

You also are looking at BC Place ONLY from its own operating income and losses. You are not taking into account the tens of millions of dollars spent downtown by all the people who attend the 200+dates per year they have trade shows, conventions, concerts, rugby sevens, national team soccer etc. Having a large downtown stadium brings a lot of money to the economy. The BC government makes far more in tax revenues from economic activity than they lose from Pavco operating losses. They also made a lot of money selling all the land around the stadium for all the condo towers that are now sitting there.

Once covid is past us, the convention and trade show business and concert business will be heating up and Vancouver will be in desperate need of that activity. BC Place is a significant part of that and the economy.

Selling it is a great option, but they wont sell it for a viable price because they would get smeared for selling it for less than the renovations cost. Demolishing it and moving the Caps AND Lions to surrey would be very costly to the economy. Its better to keep the Caps there (as long as they live anyways), and put the Lions and CPL in surrey stadium.

In saying that, if the Lions get a stadium in Surrey and the MLS Caps leave the market , then the scenario changes and a plan to take down the stadium and replace it with convention space, housing, and a small sports facility becomes viable.

Not strange at all. 1 for North America (including Mexico), 2 for Europe and 2 for South/Central America

if its true, we should see Axel coming forth with the names, photos, location for recruiting and resumes - its what a PROFESSIONAL club should do - and it took since 2011- strange

afterall, this should be BIG news for a Club that has used slight-of-hand agents to do their scouting... and we all know how that has turned out !!

its time for Axel to broadcast the good news, isnt it ?? if he doesnt, then that would be strange - agree ??

if you remember, a few months ago, axel mentioned about hiring 2-3 revenue-making people- since then, we haven"t heard a peep- strange

Their reply to your question was that they don't want agents targeting the scouts. Do other teams show their scouting staff names to that level?

    interesting reply-

other clubs in the world state their head scouts- check out TFC, Seattle, Liverpool

if the Caps did hire a head scout- LET ALONE 5 SCOUTS- it would show they are becoming more professional- they havent!!

when scuster and pannes came 2 years ago, 1 or both stated that the Club was going to hire a scouting staff - if they have, why keep it a secret ? - GOOD GRIEF!!! more smoke and mirrors from the FO

thinking the Club has 5 scouts is just ridiculous- if they do, each scout is on a finder's fee for a prospect that is signed by the Club- no way, the Club has hired 5 scouts!!

axel is hiding and/or stretching the truth- his answer is just ... RIDICULOUS and EMBARRASSING

its no wonder mark pannes left after 6 months

I think Montero will be gone. His most recent highlight reel might get him a regular starting place elsewhere (possibly back in Portugal?) but I fear that if he was a back up here he would just become a distraction and Schuster knows that.

None yet. I really hope they can get a deal for less and keep Freddy. He was our best player and really showed the others how a professional works in a horrible situation/team.

Hey OldFan, are you following any of the keep / stay discussions over at 86ForEver?

unless MDS sees montero as a regular starter, fredy wont be a happy Cap- remember when he was subbed in a game and he went back to the bench and pouted and snarled at MDS ??

did he perform well ? YES should he be a regular top 11 for 2021 ? NO

could he be useful as a 30 minute sub ? YES would he happy in that role ? NO

is he worth a $ 968 K deal like he had in 2020 ? NO
    should he be signed for a $ 600K , 1 year contract ? NO
should theo bair be his replacement ? NO
do the Caps need to move on from fredy ? YES (unless he is happy to be a sub player for 1 more year and agrees to take a significant salary cut under $400K)

Blowing up once in a shit show of a season on a dreadful team is understandable.
He can still start and play the whole 90. It's not like he gasses at the stroke of the hour.

$600k, start and play for 70+ minutes most games.

I really believe that Montero's future at the club hinges more on the signing of a new attacking playmaker than anything else. If Schuster is thwarted in this transfer window and has to wait until the summer window for that move to happen, then I think Montero is here for the year. Or not. Hard to read the tea leaves on this one.

I stopped reading 86 forever two or three years back as I didn't get much value from their articles. If they are providing good content currently I should get back into reading their site. We are thin on people talking Caps these days. Anything helps! I will check it out.

Edit; I just checked out an article from Dec 7th on stay/go. It had multiple staff included. Very well done I will pay attention to this site again! Thanks

i have enjoyed reading 86forever reporting

BUT i am taken-aback by the site's facilitators for NOT reporting on the arrest and charges laid on ex-Whitecap coach, bob birarda- this is significant news and the leaders of the site are being deliberately derelict on not reporting on it

they will probably use the excuse of innocent until proven guilty- if that is valid, then why are local newspapers and commentators reporting on it

its news about the whitecaps and it should be reported

it comes across that they dont want to ruffle feathers in the Cap FO and ownership group, and- if true- that is simply not good enough- makes me wonder if they joined in the walk-out in support of the ex-Cap women during the portland game at BC Place

They are fans with a blog about the team, that's it. If they are not commenting on Birarda, it's reasonably possible to assume that their "day jobs" (most likely, university students with exams) got in the way or what have you. I myself wouldn't read anything more onto it.

As for the blog itself, I get more from the cogent and incisive points made by a couple of posters in the comment section, while it's also clear that one or two have trouble controlling their Aspergers with the nature of their responses. But it's a big, inclusive tent, so I guess everyone can recognize and adjust. I'll just call it "passion" and almost any interest in the team is a good thing.

86Forever was right- It was the right decision for everyone- Some late breaking news this morning, as the Caps deal keeper Evan Bush to Columbus for $125,000 in General Allocation Money. The Caps actually did something I advocated for!

it leaves the goalie duo of crepeau and hasal which IMO is a pretty good situation for the team, but thomas must be given some minutes in order to mature

86Forever tends to cover mostly the sport and team not the politics around it. They do put links at the bottom of their articles to other sites and sources so maybe they want to cover what they want to and let others cover the political side? Just my SWAG.
