I know, and I agree that Shaqiri will give you little defensive cove. But Henderson and Wijnaldum are midfielders, too, responsible for linking defence and attack. They have to do more in games such as today when the opponent largely sits back. It's not too much to ask them to pass the ball forwards and more quickly, not allowing West ham to regain its defensive shape that easily, surely?
No. Sport, schools, colleges and universities, other essential services and even those restaurants which provide takeaways will remain operational.
"The Premier League season will continue despite the government unveiling plans for a second lockdown England." https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/boris-johnson-lockdown-premier-league-22936895 Thankfully!
And then goes out and gets Man of the Match while only making one mistake that I can remember during the whole game. Since he isn't in the CL squad I'd expect that he gets the Prem starts and Rhys WIlliams gets the CL starts until Fabinho is back. Also props to Diogo Jota for his Nuke La Loosh interview technique.
Poor mistake for first goal. Salah penalty was a bit soft but rightly given. I can see why first Jota goal was disallowed as Mane slides into the keeper. Great second goal. Shaqiri can definitely do a job at #10 and Jota is a bundle of energy. Good game by Phillips although wasn't tested too much. In possession kept it very simple and our players bypassed him a lot when we had the ball, especially in the first half. Nevertheless, he should be proud of his debut. Gladly take the three points as we await the return of Fabinho and Thiago.
Making up for the [missed] more blatant one on Mane which was not given. The inconsistency of decision-making by referees still baffles.
With this win, Liverpool equalled a club record 63 league games unbeaten at Anfield set by Bob Paisley's all-conquering side between February 1978 and December 1981.
good piece about Phillips' and his performance today. have we found a solid Matip replacement? https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/54764456 If everything had gone as originally planned, Nathaniel Phillips wouldn't even have been at Anfield this season, let alone starting a Premier League game against West Ham. It was assumed the defender would likely have been plying his trade in the Championship in 2020-21, or back in Germany, where he spent a successful loan spell with Stuttgart last campaign. But the lack of a willing suitor, coupled with a Reds defensive crisis, means the 23-year-old has instead been thrust straight into the deep end of a top-flight title defence. On the evidence of his performance in Saturday's 2-1 win against West Ham, he looks far more likely to swim than sink.
Working today, appreciated the comms. I'm just repeating the mantra, ugly + 3 points = good. Great reports on Phillips and Jota, good stuff.
Last season in October and November we had 5 games in the league where we won by the score of 2-1. I brought this up after the Sheffield match, and here we are again. Last season, we always found a way. It’s starting to feel like we are finding our winning groove this season. The most important win of last season was Aston Villa away, when we scored two late goals to win 2-1. It was the game that preceded the win over Manchester City. This one was not nearly as dramatic, but it does feel important with City coming up next week. Nat Phillips, what a performance. Diogo Jota, what a signing. Xherdan Shaqiri, welcome back, where were you last season? Up the Reds.
Nate played well. I also thought Jones played well. I only saw one bad kick for each of them. I was impressed by Shaq. Has hardly played but couldn't find a spec of rust in his game. Mane on the other hand couldn't get a touch right. He did work as hard as ever but couldn't get anything to work.
Yesterday, everything he touched turned to dust, and he almost bollixed the second and final goal by potentially being offside. One of those days, I guess. By the way, i was chatting to others about the goal we conceded and then watched the highlights again. Maybe I was a bit harsh on Gomez's clearance-- that was a whipped-in cross which probably moved ay the last minute. Gomez did his bit by heading the ball away but, typically, nobody contested for the second ball or picked up Fornals-- Wijnaldum, maybe?-- and he was allowed to control the ball and lash it in pretty much unchallenged.
I agree. watching live I thought "he tried to pas the ball out, over the attacker's head ffs! just get rid of it" but on replays it looks like it came at him and dipped late once he was committed to the header and couldn't dip down fast enough to get proper contact.
I think there were two issues on that play. The first occurred when TAA backed off instead of closing down the crosser. The time and space he was given made hitting a good cross that much easier. I think it would have been better and easier for Gomez to head the ball back to where it came from.
Nat Phillips was the best in Bundesliga.2 last season for aerial duel success. pic.twitter.com/GHpM2dCy0w— Sam McGuire (@SamMcGuire90) October 31, 2020 This was a surprising stat I saw yesterday. Phillips was the best in Bundelsiga 2 in aerial duals last season. West Ham wanted to bully Nat Phillips and try to out physical him, but he is actually is very comfortable defending balls in the air. He was excellent in the match. I’m not sure how well he would do with Raheem Sterling running at him next week. I would really prefer for Matip to be back.
A huge issue was how the goal scorer was allowed to stand completely unmarked on the edge of the box.
See through the eyes of @XS_11official as he finds @DiogoJota18 for yesterday's winner 👀A brilliant and unique angle 🤩 pic.twitter.com/4jIgQfVjPS— Liverpool FC (@LFC) November 1, 2020
