That goal was invigorating. They've looked like a different team since, as often happens. Though it's not often you look like a different team than your whole season. Remains to be seen if it'll continue, but it's added intrigue to their campaign.
And just like that, Atleti are back level. Clumsy touch by Mwepu starts the break. Then lazy recovery, & half-assed challenges. Too easy. Maybe Jesse should have gotten everybody behind the ball when they went up surprisingly.
Salzburg's aggression hasn't reduced one bit since they went up 2-1. They're still on the front foot, in spite of the goal by Atleti. It's dangerous. Hopefully it pays off. Discretion may be the better part of valor. Fun to watch though.
and Salzburg blows the draw now too. It was playing w/ fire. Now their aggression could be of benefit, needing a comeback. That is if they still have the legs & fight.
It was a valiant effort, but all for naught in the end again. You just wonder if it would have went differently if they were pragmatic w/ the lead. Come away w/ a pt at least, & maybe hit them on the counter to seal it.
Jesse was pretty bad at that with NYRB too. He struggled to shut down games up a lead, and he struggled when he tried to maintain the press too, although that usually went a bit better.
I've seen him slap a simple 442 out there to preserve a lead or on the road against a much better team before. It's just a reluctant thing for him & once his system surprisingly worked well enough to get a lead on the road against mighty Atleti, he should have scrapped instead of stuck w/ it. But I guess he thought he should stick w/ what worked. We saw how well that served Bruce in Couva, playing a 442 diamond because it got a result at home against Panama, w/ some dicey moments, and on a much better, less narrow field. It may almost always work out for Jesse at Liverpool or even Dortmund/Leipzig, but Salzburg or the nat'l team as it currently stands? You gotta know when to hold'em & when to fold 'em. He doesn't have among the strongest hands there.
According to Sport Bild, Jesse Marsch has been identified as one of three potential managers to replace Lucien Favre at the end of the season if Borussia Dortmund decide against extending his contract. https://t.co/0y7oumeF5i— MLS Buzz (@MLS_Buzz) October 28, 2020
In the article it says he already had an offer from Schalke but turned it down because he wanted to coach at a higher level. This works smoothest if Nagelsmann goes to Dortmund, Marsch goes to Leipzig.
imagine being schalke and trying to hire a manager. 'we are trying to implement an internal salary cap and arent interested in aiming for europe just now' talk about where do i sign
If I'm a top-half manager in the 2.Bundesliga, I'm like "hmm, thanks but no thanks, you'll be right down here soon." They'll probably end up with some 3.Liga or reserve team manager. Edit: forgot they had already hired Wagner's replacement...who was in charge of the Germany U18s. That proves my point, I think.
nah it's the Bundesliga not the EPL. Schalke could very well drop down, but they won't be there for very long.
