Could be being picky but there were times where I thought his runs in the box were almost always far post and his movement near the box wasn’t a give me the ball type movement.
He is a great outlet for their team though. And they suck going forward. Really bad

We really need to start assessing Sargent with Bremen as a midfielder and not a striker. He may not score 5 goals this year, but based on what they are asking him to do, the season could be considered a huge success for him.

I have to admit, a year ago, I was worried that Josh did not have the athleticism to play in the Bund and I was wrong. Dude's work rate is impressive. I was gassed just sitting on the couch watching him today.

They are brutal going forward. It's very tough to watch.

They were better with Osako than with Fullkrug.

Still mad about his teammate's miss on his assist. Sargent is a BL level player through and through. If Bremen goes down he will have suitors.

The result against Hoffenheim is good but I don’t think the coaches are happy with Sargent’s performance yesterday. He struggled to keep possession and didn't move into the right spaces even after Füllkrug‘s injury.
I think he‘ll stay on the team against Frankfurt but only because Osako and Selke are out. My hope is that Füllkrug recovers quickly. Otherwise we will have the same situation we had last season that Sargent has to play even though he should sit one or two out.

Why do you think the coaches aren’t happy?

what would the right spaces have been?

I had almost the exact same questions.

Also, what responsibility do the center backs hold in the poor attack given their absolute inability to progress through the ball through the midfield to save their lives?

The best attacks Bremen had today were the ones that Sargent started from their own half.

He was practically a box to box midfielder today (and not a bad one!). I mean, they're a poor club and scrapping for points and it's kinda working, but just a brutal watch.

It's not gonna keep the doubters off Josh's back and it's not helping him much as a finisher, but I think these situations can help a striker really round out their game. Jozy became a much better player during those awful times in England, and I want to see Josh with the US because I suspect he's going to look a lot better in a different situation.

    i dont know...not to nitpick.

But i think england changed jozy's game for the worse.

In the beginning he was fast and scored on the break for NYRB...he played facing goal.

I never liked him as a post up battering ram type...and I blame that on England/USMNT coaches.

He did get better in some aspects though...became a better passer, holdup player, perhaps finisher.

For Sargent it can help...but he needs to get out of the type of team he is on ASAP.

could be that bremen improves or that he leaves...but long-term, playing on a team like this will certainly limit him as a center forward (which is his only chance for usmnt play, imo).

It doesn't sound like folks have given up on him, at least based on some weser-kurier comments. The comments in this article say the lack of midfield support is a real problem for the offense. One comment does say Sarge needs to be more dangerous.

    https://www.weser-kurier.de/werder/...t-trotz-werders-traumstart-_arid,1940956.html

This article comments one person says Sarge was better than the Kicker 4 rating he got against Hoffenheim, because of all the off the ball work.

Do you have a source where the coaches weren't happy with Sarge?

Not sure what this means, other than even less of a chance Sargent sits (not like he was anyways, despite some of the comments here). But I can't imagine it'll change much of anything for him, since he's sitting farther back facilitating. Bad news for Werder though, since Fullkrug is at least pretty dangerous with limited opportunities.

I do think it's pretty entertaining seeing quite a bit of negativity when we have a 20 year old who is probably the first attacking name on the team sheet (and has started every game) for the 7th place team in the Bundesliga. Quite a change from 3 years ago.

He has shown so really astute ball movement in the attacking third when he receives the ball there. But he rarely gets the ball there. He is most often trying to make do with some scraps that fall his way when the midfield has lost the ball and he gets it back, or when Bittencourt's errant passes get deflected to him. He is trying to make up for terrible service with high-energy midfielder behavior. I think it is what his team needs from him, but I don't think it is what he needs. I don't think I saw any actions from him that are really toward the game that he is ideally suited for. I'd love to see him on a team that could pass.

Why? Hopefully, he’ll play CF in front of Rashica and Chong.

Key to success for mediocre coaches ... injuries force them to make adjustments that they normally wouldn’t make. Secret to Bruce Arena’s success in 2002.

Fullkrug is the leading scorer on the team. With him being out, there will be more attention on Sargent. Sargent is better suited to playing as a secondary striker off of a stronger number nine like Fullkrug than playing CF. He lacks the physical tools to play as a number 9.

Fullkrug is good with his head, but he hasn't been facilitating anything at all for Sargent. In fact, I agree that Sargent was more involved with Osako playing after Fullkrug went out and believe, like the post above suggests, that he will be better off with more mobile players around him.

The good thing about this is, I think, he's now establishing himself as a Bundesliga player. I know most here (myself included) are disappointed with the lack of goals, but I gotta think other teams have noticed his quality, and he's at least bound to stay in a top league. Last year, if they had been relegated, he likely would have been looking at a season in B2.

didn't McBride and other strikers have the same problem for several years at Fulham? I think Dempsey was the only one for years who scored double digits in a season.

Of the 4 goals 2 were from PKs, and 1 was from a corner , so how many goals did he have from open play or created all by himself ?

It boggles the mind that some people are judging Sargent based on the scoresheet. He literally gets one or two chances every game to do anything w/ respect to scoring and they aren't even good ones. As matter of fact... it seems like it has been several games since he has had a legit chance to score. Some will blame him for not getting himself in the right position.... for the most part I don't buy it. The dude is being asked to connect the ball from the back to the front and he is doing a decent job based on the lack of class on the team.... and when he does make the right run no one ever serves him the ball in a good spot. The pressure must be immense. He is listed as a striker but he gets almost no chances to strike. Unfortunately... he seems to be their best option at the position he is playing.... ergo the fact they a team with a lack of talent is still near the top of the BDL. If I am the coach I am not moving him up front... I am putting someone else up there and hope that whoever plays the top 9 can actually serve Josh back once in a while. Now... I am not saying I am sold on Josh being the guy to spearhead the forwards for the USMNT.... just that I understand his lack of scoring stats right now. IMO... the jury is still out. Hoping that he catches a few breaks here and there in the coming weeks and he is able to find the back of the net.

I did the simple calculations a few pages back with TransferMarket stats, but McBride scored every 270 minutes, and Sargent scores every 330 minutes (prolly slightly less now). Not that different, with the caveat being Sargent is 19/20 and McBride was 27-32. Time has somehow made prior generations of US players better than they actually were.
