Because he is willing to consider Chile and is already applying for a passport.

I don't think it implies he is an outsider. It only implies he's keeping his options open.

Also, it will be easier for him to play in Spain with a Chilean passport. That's reason alone to do it.

    Very nice first goal.

This is usl type teams. So, the “he definitely needs to be called up now” takes are a bit much. But there are like 5-6 forwards who are decent. So, yea, prob will get a call.

the release from usmnt said domestic players can be called up, so I’d take akinola and ebobisse ahead of Soto.

He's a bit older and more professionally experienced than you average academy player, of course, but when the Jongs score at the rate, folk's ears perk up a bit. Not going to get him to Barcelona, but someone would take a flier on him in a better league if he keeps this up at all. (That said, scoring 4 goals every 5/6 games for the entire season is pretty unlikely.) I don't understand what Norwich's plan is.

Of course, I'm not saying is true, or a fact. I'm just stating that a team member from a tight-knit group would probably want to remain with a team that had success and a future that looks good, instead, I see him applying an arm-twisting method to expedite his inclusion and if he doesn't get it then he is willing to jump ship. I don't see that from Uly, Otowasie, or even Weah. Just point out that difference.

It will suck to lose Soto and if we do USSF will get blamed again for "not doing much" to not lose a player. But Soto has to do more. We do have a weak pool at striker but we have players like Zardes, Daryl Dike and Ebobisse in MLS and Sargent at the Bundesliga. Plus if we are going to call in Soto even though he plays in a second division league why not call in Nicholas Gioachinni or Novakovich who also play in second division leagues and are also scoring goals?

If Soto wants to pick Chile because he can get his work permit faster then fine, he should go for it. Chile is desperate right now. I personally prefer players that choose the US because they want to be here not because we are a second option. I do understand his point though if he decides to play for Chile but the USMNT needs players committed to the team.

    fair point.
any chance he can get loaned to an Eredivisie side or perhaps Norwich might recall him in January if he keeps up his scoring?

Soto has the confidence of a great striker. He just might be our best young striker iff that alone

Unless the WP rules change drastically, he won't be able to play in the Championship.

Has Norwich ever said what they were thinking with Soto? Hoping he gets enough Chile caps to get a WP? Just a side-hustle and hope to sell him for a few quid profit? I don't get it.

So Norwich don't know what they're doing? Or are they trying to create a loan army, like the big clubs? What does Norwich know that we don't know?

I don't either, but one thing is certain, Norwich must understand the WP rules.

I'm going to repeat a point that has been made several times on this thread, but Norwich explicitly said that they believe it will be easier for them to acquire him a work permit after the rules change post-Brexit.

This is because they believe that Brexit will give clubs more control over how they fill their roster with international slots. The belief is that each club will have a cap (like how Spain/Italy have non-EU slots) on players without a UK passport and will essentially be able to fill them as they please. The idea is that EU players will no longer get any preferential treatment and clubs will be able to decided within limits for themselves how to fill their slots.

It's not the craziest gamble in the world at all.

I forgot that was the plan. Either way, they may get a chance to sell him elsewhere and at least break even.

I think he's a decent enough striker if he stays healthy.

Totally agreed. I feel like the world, as a professional player, shrinks down to exactly a population of 1 with respect to your very short, cut throat career. We benefit from the bigger countries' guys dropping "down" to play with us as well.

If I'm GGG, I'm bringing in Soto next month and at least getting him on the pitch at some point. From what I've seen of him so far, I get the feeling that he has the highest ceiling of any of our 9s. He was the second leading scorer in the U20 WC behind Haaland. Looking at these all touch videos gives me the impression that he needs to be playing in a higher level league than he is now.

The way I look at it is that if he is making noises about leaving, you kiss is rear a bit if you have to and give him a look. I can't see all that much downside to it. The upside if he pans out could be significant.

I totally agree. There is nothing lost with capping him. Bring him and even get him a start. Cant be any worse than any other 9 we have ATM. 9 is clearly the murkiest of situations for us and one that I hope to see improved before the WCQ start.

It's a much bigger gamble for Soto than it is for Norwich.

Soto basically is signing up for
    1. probably two years of being on loan, and things are always extra perilous when you are a temporary player in whom your club does not have a long-term stake
    2. hoping that the WP rules change in his favor
    3. if #2 occurs, hoping that the staff at Norwich who liked him enough to bring him in are still there and rate him, or at least hoping that a new guy is willing to give him a chance
I don't know what offers were on the table for Soto, but it's much less risky to sign for a club that you know likes you and can legally put you on the field for them immediately.

It's still possible, of course, that Soto can run this gauntlet. Hopefully he does!

South American WCQing has already started. Even under the current permit rules, Soto should be able to accumulate the needed caps, if Chile are as desperate as stated.

Gregg has already mentioned Soto by name as someone that interests him in the 9 spot. If I were a betting man, I’d say Soto gets the call for November.

We can't cap him until mid of next year. Chile can cap him next month.
